The Descent

Caught this the other day. Not sure if it’s even hit US theaters yet, but if it has, do yourself a favor and watch it. Easily one of the best horror films I’ve seen in a long time.

Personally, it just proves that one solid piece of European horror beats ten American slashers any day of the week.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the film..?

Man, this movie is incredible—total claustrophobia from start to finish.🙏

It’s a genuinely terrifying watch. Is it the cave setting? The creature hunting them? Or just how people act when they're cornered? Honestly, it's a bit of everything... I had a blast watching it, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something intense.

The creatures are just weird and ridiculous. It’s a complete joke compared to Gollum, who is ten times more terrifying and better executed than these slimy humanoid freaks... the acting is subpar and the plot is shaky.

But whatever, we could always use more decent horror movies... and this one lands right in that middle ground. Not amazing, not terrible... just meh. Actually, it's okay.

A solid new horror entry from the author behind those great Dog Soldiers days

I have just one question for those who have already seen it: is it truly that good?

(A lot of horror sites are calling it the 'film of the year' or 'horror film of the year,' with comments along the lines of I almost had a heart attack and there are even reports of people passing out in theaters over in England...)

Most importantly, when is this hitting theaters here in the States? 😎

The movie is genuinely great, but don't go in expecting a total jump-scare fest. Just expect a really solid film. As for when it hits theaters here in the States, I've got no clue—I'm pretty sure I'll only find out via some dark ritual or a message from a demon😎

Look, it really just comes down to personal taste. For me, "The Monsters" were absolutely terrifying—and they aren't even monsters, they're just people who somehow evolved backward into this weird hybrid of moles and human goldfish.
Honestly, if your biggest gripe is that the movie wasn't scary enough, you're looking at it all wrong. To me, it was such a solid film that it didn't even need the scares to be good.

Haha, alright... I wasn't really expecting those alien monsters, but honestly, looking at them, it felt like those two girls could've taken down all ten of those things (monsters, I know they aren't, but whatever) or however many were lurking around before. At the end of the day, if they had just stayed low and played it smart, they probably could've wiped out way more than they did. Look, I know I'm talking crazy here, but watching it, I felt like even I could take a few of those "monsters" out myself, so by the halfway point, they weren't even scary to me anymore.
At the start, though, they actually looked pretty terrifying, you know, back when you didn't have a clue what they were or what they were capable of.

The cinematography was solid, and you don't see many all-female lead movies like this much. The acting was totally fine too, it's just that the movie itself didn't creep me out, and it's supposed to be a horror.

Last time I checked IMDb, the movie had a 7.5 rating (though the site's acting a bit glitchy right now so I'm not sure if it's still there). A 7.5 is actually higher than, say, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which I think got a 7.2. I mean, you can't really compare the two, but I truly don't see what's so incredible about The Descent that it deserves such a high score.

Look, here’s the thing—these people have been living in caves for centuries. They’ve basically atrophied, so their only real edge is sheer numbers and knowing how to navigate the terrain.

I don't know, for me, the scary part was just how plausible the script felt. We aren't talking about zombies or some sci-fi nonsense here; this is the kind of stuff that could actually happen.

Regarding what you said about how they could have easily wiped them out—that’s really the core of the movie. It’s all about her descent into madness and the shifting dynamics within the group. You know the saying... he who fights monsters? She ended up becoming just like them.

I watched it today... It was alright, I suppose... though I found myself jumping out of my skin more times than I care to admit, but then again, I’ve always been a bit of a nervous wreck, haven't I?

Honestly, this movie was such a killer surprise. Just... wow.
It’s easily one of the best horror flicks I’ve seen in years—seriously, don't sleep on this one, just go watch it.

So, I finally sat down and watched the movie.

I have to admit, it isn't half bad; it’s engaging and maintains enough tension to keep you hooked, which is what matters most, so I’d probably give it a solid 6/10 by IMDb standards. There are some strong scenes, and the direction is top-notch...

Now, for what didn't work for me. The script is just weak. How is someone supposed to undergo mutation in a place where there’s absolutely no food supply? If people from several centuries ago had wandered into those caves and realized they were trapped... they would have simply starved to death after exhausting whatever supplies they brought with them. Not to mention the timeline issues, claiming this mutation takes thousands of years when America wasn't even being explored like that until the late 15th century...

Furthermore, if we're talking about cavemen living there for millennia... why on earth would anyone choose to live in a cave and evolve that way when everything they need—food, water, fire, sunlight, Vitamin D—is right outside... and if that's the case, then what was the point of bringing in those miners who were supposedly there a hundred years ago??

I stumbled upon an interesting theory on IMDb suggesting the monster wasn't actually real, but rather that the girls were all hallucinating; the most level-headed one died while trying to help the Asian girl, who ended up killing her... Honestly, if you look closely, it’s entirely possible given how unstable the central plot is, with creatures mutating inside a cave, come on guys, be serious...🙂

Personally, I’m leaning toward the idea that these monsters are very real and they eat just about anything—from animals that stumble into the pit, to local wildlife and plants that call it home, down to the explorers who fall in and never make it back to the surface.😈

That whole theory that it's all just some collective hallucination feels a little too 🤮—plus, it's a trope that gets overused, and usually badly. Honestly, movies where everything turns out to be a product of the protagonist's fractured psyche irritate me; most of them rely entirely on that twist just to function, which feels 👎

Besides, they did stumble upon a massive pile of bones, didn't they?😕
