As for that one forum user who claims they don't like The Descent, well, their opinion carries just as much weight as anyone else's here. If they didn't enjoy it, fine. It's their prerogative. For instance, not too long ago, I tried sitting down to watch the movie with my brother and sister—my brother thought it was just mediocre, while my sister actually fell asleep (!!!) right in the middle of it because she found it so boring.😕 Then, she woke up toward the end only to complain that the ending was stupid.🤣 🤣 🤣 (Compare that to when we watched [REC], where she couldn't sleep a wink all night.)

The movie was alright. I just finished watching it, and honestly, it wasn't nearly as terrifying as I expected, though compared to the usual horror fare, I’d say it’s actually quite a solid effort. For those who enjoyed this one, they’ve already started filming Descent 2, which should be hitting theaters sometime in 2009, though I have my doubts about whether it'll even get a wide release here in the States.

The Descent... I have my doubts that fans of the first film will actually show up for the sequel. We all know how it goes—sequels rarely live up to the original.

It’s a decent enough movie, but honestly, I didn't find it quite as groundbreaking as everyone else seems to claim. The opening really hooks you—it's great—but once the monsters actually show up, the whole thing just devolves into your typical, run-of-the-mill gore fest.

Look, once the monsters arrive, the movie shifts gears from an adventure into full-blown survival horror—which, let's be real, is pretty much expected when the girls in the cast are basically being treated like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the creatures.
I'll probably check out the sequel, but I’m certainly not holding my breath for anything groundbreaking.

Since when does an all-you-can-eat buffet take out half the patrons in a restaurant? If the monsters were actually stronger than the girls, maybe I'd get it, but they were getting handled like toddlers here.

The reality is that only > Sarah and > Juno actually stood their ground against those things. I mean, think about it—Juno is basically a professional extreme athlete, and > Sarah’s transformation from a terrified girl into a total Amazonian warrior makes perfect sense given she had absolutely nothing left to lose after that tragedy at the start of the film. Everyone else either ran for their lives or ended up as food. Seriously, go back and rewatch that sequence—it is pure hysteria, panic, and raw terror. On the flip side, you have to admit that in a situation like this—fighting for your life in total darkness on completely unknown territory—many people show way more grit and strength than anyone would expect; it’s just that primal survival instinct kicking in.
It is honestly that exact characterization—how they react under extreme pressure—that is what I appreciate most about The Descent.

A lot of people seem to miss a very fundamental point here. These "creatures" actually evolved from humanoids, so you could arguably view them as a divergent branch of humanity, specifically adapted to the exact conditions depicted in the movie. They've likely spent tens of thousands of years evolving into what they are now: perfectly suited for life in total darkness. Much like bats, they are essentially blind, relying instead on highly developed hearing and sensory organs—which explains those massive ears—to detect solid objects and the movement of living beings for hunting. They probably even make short excursions out to the immediate vicinity of the cave entrance to hunt.

Their way of life has made them incredibly agile and fast. BUT... they don't actually possess any superhuman strength. Their diet in those conditions, combined with the lack of light (and presumably sunlight/calcium), has left them relatively fragile. Aside from their speed, agility, and those extremely dangerous jaws, they don't have massive physical power; that is why, if the lighting is good and they are forced into a head-on confrontation, they can be defeated individually.
When they feed, they instinctively go straight for the stomach and soft tissues—it's a pure craving for protein.
They are portrayed exactly as these humanoids would be if they truly existed.
In the end, only two women really went toe-to-toe with them; the others were mostly gripped by hysteria and panic. Granted, the girls did have tools—picks and axes—at their disposal.
But the interior of that mountain is their home turf, so logically, the women didn't stand a chance. That's just how it ends.
Everything is brilliantly and logically executed. Perhaps it wouldn't have hurt if they had shown female crawlers or children as well, just to add variety.
Regardless, this is definitely one of those rare horror films that I genuinely enjoyed, and based on what I've seen on the Net, it has grown into a total cult classic.
As for a sequel, it seems like a bit of a non-starter to me, because it feels like an artificial extension of a story that was already perfectly concluded and wrapped up. But hey, we'll see. Don't go expecting anything special.

I just rewatched it, and honestly, I was terrified more than once... what an incredible movie. I live for horror films that play with ambiguity and heavy subtext like this one does. The color palette is also striking; those two dominant colors used throughout the film really set the mood perfectly. One thing I wanted to bring up: did anyone else catch that moment at the end? When it’s just Juno and Sarah left, right before that final group ambushes them, they light up a sign that points in the complete opposite direction. It opens up a dark possibility: maybe Sarah intentionally led her astray just to finish her off. But since Juno is leading at that exact moment... well, either Sarah saw the sign and decided to double down on the betrayal, or it was just bad luck. And don't even get me started on the ending—the whole thing with Juno and her husband is masterfully handled through those tiny, subtle details. Does the hallucination where Sarah sees Juno imply that Juno is somehow responsible for the accident because her husband was thinking about her? Either way, it's brilliant.
