Burning the effigy is supposed to burn away all the garbage in society to welcome spring. That’s the whole point of Mardi Gras. Obviously, in a place like Santa Barbara, everything bad is just one big gay couple. Everything else is actually thriving. It's a real shame for all those queers from Santa Barbara who had to sit through this, only to have their fellow citizens tell them they're "to blame for everything."

wiredfalcon2 said:So, can you actually point to a single feminist defending a culture that treats women like second-class citizens? You can't. You're guessing, right? Nowhere. It's the exact opposite. What actually happens is they call out corporations and countries that play nice with problematic places like Saudi Arabia while putting on a big show for the public about fighting for human rights. Stop talking nonsense. Liberals aren't out here defending Muslim culture either; they're defending freedom of religion—as long as people follow the laws of the country they live in. So, in this whole little drama, you're the only joke here. ☕

P.S. If it weren't for liberalism and human rights, you'd be the first one sent to Treblinka. Pretty obvious, isn't it?

I see nothing but manufactured outrage from a loud, tiny minority in the States. They’re more interested in barking about irrelevant nonsense just to satisfy some obsession with diversity and insane liberal extremes than actually addressing the points you made.

You clearly aren't paying attention to what’s actually happening in the States. Look, I’m not saying everyone is like this—that would be a tragedy—but there is a specific breed of hardcore liberal/feminist out there that makes me lose my mind. They’ll scream from the rooftops when someone else violates rights, but the second a Muslim commits the exact same offense? They suddenly vanish. They crawl into a hole and stay silent because speaking up would contradict their precious "progressive" principles. There isn't a soul among them willing to say anything negative about a minority group in their own country, even when they have every right to.

I have plenty of examples where Muslims arriving in the US... Another country. It’s obvious they have zero respect for local customs and just treat women exactly how they would back home. But apparently, we’re all supposed to look the other way because "it's their culture" and we have to be respectful. They shouldn't be expected to adapt to our way of life like everyone else does. We can joke about the Christian God all day long without anyone blinking, yet the moment someone says something against God, suddenly it's a matter of respecting cultural sensitivities. And I'm saying this as an agnostic. I really hope you aren't one of those people, because if you are, you're a complete joke. ☕

Regarding the last point, I have nothing against liberalism. In fact, I’m definitely more on the liberal side than the conservative side regarding most issues. However, what happened during Mardi Gras was completely unacceptable; I’m with urbanhawk17 on this one—the whole situation was idiotic and shouldn't be tolerated. What really grinds my gears, though, is the hypocrisy and the push toward extreme liberalism. Nothing is good when it drifts into extremes. What we are seeing unfolding across Western Europe, the US, and Canada is pure extremism. If there's any silver lining, I believe it's that this is just one loud minority rather than everyone, but that specific group is doing massive damage to the liberal movement as a whole. It’s glaringly obvious that the right wing is gaining ground globally—in the US, the UK, and various European states—precisely because of this extremist, frankly moronic politics. I hope nobody takes offense at that last part. ☕

Gerald Thompson62 said:They completely missed the whole point of Mardi Gras—the whole pagan tradition of chasing away evil spirits and signaling the arrival of spring, rebirth, and abundance. Historically, people used it as a way to poke fun at the government without getting arrested. The authorities actually allowed it because it was easier to just identify who the troublemakers were.

Burning a gay couple with a child isn't mocking the government, nor is it driving out bad spirits. They could have used Zoran, Kolinda, or any other politician, which is how it’s actually done. This mess happens when people who don't understand the tradition try to take the lead.

I think in places like Santa Barbara, they just burn the same old "Mardi Gras" figure every year—a totally neutral character that’s been around for a century. That’s because those folks were always too afraid to actually rebel against the establishment (they’ve always been pretty much sycophants). So, they just burn the same poor soul under a different name every hundred years.

Most of these parade organizers or groups running the show are tied directly to political parties. So, you can easily view this entire spectacle as nothing more than a calculated political message.

Hey, where in the US do you actually live, or are you just getting your education on America through Reddit memes?

I mean, in a country where Trump is president, conservative feelings are supposedly under threat. Poor guys, they aren't even allowed to make a sound. Heaven forbid they elect a president who screams at everyone. It's just total dominance by a small, loud "woke" minority. The US is totally polarized.

Look, you don't get a choice in being gay, but you absolutely do get to choose whether or not you believe in God.
So, if we're being technical about it, sure, you can mock a religion all you want, but you shouldn't be attacking someone for something they were born with and couldn't change.
That goes for pretty much everything physical, too—whether it's how tall you are or the color of your skin.

In the 21st century, your location actually matters if you want to make sense of global affairs.

And where did I ever claim that conservatives are under threat? I simply laid out why they’re gaining ground and the specific reasons why Trump rose to power. I have no idea what part of my post you found so "absurd" or "unrealistic," but it’s obvious you have a soft spot for extreme politics if basic facts like the ones I mentioned above bother you so much. Honestly, I expected this exact kind of comment. ☕

Are you actually serious about faith being a "choice"? lol. You think it's okay to roast a religion but not a person? Please. People poke fun at anyone who's super short, or giant, or way too skinny, or overweight, or even just has weird ears. It's all the same thing.

Look, you wouldn't believe how much it actually matters where you live if you’re gonna act like an expert on a place. If you haven't spent at least three months there—six if you want to be taken seriously—you should probably just shut up. You’re just talking out of your ass based on some media bubble fed to you by people who think exactly like you do because you liked their posts on Facebook. I’m saying this as someone who’s actually lived outside the US. So, yeah, my guess is you just get your news from Reddit memes. Otherwise, you’d realize the vibe in Ohio is nothing like California, which has zero in common with Texas, which isn't anything like Indiana. And don't ever pull that "that's just how it is in the USA" crap; that's like taking some random situation in Gothenburg and claiming "that's just how it is in Europe." A problem in a neighborhood in Gothenburg has nothing to do with what's happening in Cambridge, Portugal. Not even getting started on the fact that you clearly have no clue which regions hate each other in Canada, let alone anything more complicated than that, especially since it's a tiny little country.

I don't use Facebook. I only use Reddit for sports and pop culture. Generally speaking, I have zero interest in meme culture, unlike you, apparently.

Do you actually live in the US? From what I can see, we're veering off-topic by speculating about where people get their information, what their political leanings are, where they reside, or what they need to know to grasp a situation. I'm asking you nicely: explain exactly what I wrote wrong instead of circling around the question of why I'm supposedly in the wrong.

Look, let's not act like we're clueless here. In America today, you can rip on just about anyone you want, except for one specific religious group. Seriously. You can roast everyone else into oblivion, but when it comes to them, suddenly everyone has to walk on eggshells and show nothing but "understanding" because, well, that's just how it works now. And don't even get me started on how certain crimes just get swept under the rug because nobody wants to send the wrong message or stigmatize a particular crowd—not to mention how much that can tank someone's career if they speak up.

Give me a break—in the US, they pulled an artistic depiction of Snow White because it supposedly offended Christian sensibilities. What exactly are you talking about? 🤣

If they hadn't kicked him out, what would have actually happened? Honestly, absolutely nothing. People would've just posted some more illiterate, low-effort rants on Facebook, everyone else would've laughed their heads off, and nobody would've given a single damn.

What a joke, honestly. They're just lighting whatever they feel like. I mean, they were already doing this back in 2016 over in some random part of the Midwest or something involving KBKK.

And honestly, Vecchio hit the nail on the head in that post—it’s like, what's happening right here in our own backyard shouldn't be used as the yardstick for the entire continent, you know?

KBKKSBB if they hadn't, fine—but the point is they did. And you're talking about protecting a religion in a country where the church does whatever it wants, operates outside the law, and has total immunity from the government. Are you actually being serious?

Personally, even though I find the whole thing disgraceful, I’d be way more bothered if this had happened anywhere else in the country.

When it comes to people from rural Appalachia—well, you can't really expect anything different. It's sad, but true.

Lol. In America, you can say whatever you want about the church and nothing happens to you. You can call out whoever you want, whenever you feel like it. And honestly? That’s just how a normal, healthy society should work in 2020.

In this country, any regular guy in some tiny town has more protection than those institutions because we're dealing with a corrupt system and a judicial mess.
