It’s been seven days since his last encounter with a kid who actually tested positive.
Look, if there was exposure and then symptoms popped up during self-isolation, the priority isn't some arbitrary rule about isolating for 10 or 20 days after a positive test result. The real priority is that the entire household should have gone into lockdown from the outside world the very moment those symptoms started showing up.

I get all that. I just needed to make sure because I’ve got on-call shifts at the office in two weeks, and if this comes back positive, those plans are pretty much dead in the water.

So, what’s the deal with self-isolation now—is it still 10 days? A family member just tested positive, but honestly, nothing was said about anyone needing to isolate or track down contacts... feels like they aren't even active about it anymore? If not, does that 10-day count start from the actual day the test comes back positive?

I'm not 100% sure if it started when the symptoms hit, or maybe even two days before.
If you test positive but don't feel a thing, you're still in the clear.
Just trying to look out for anyone I might have exposed.

Contact tracing starts from the moment you last had contact with someone who’s sick.
If you were hanging out on Monday and they start showing symptoms within two days, then Tuesday is officially day one of your quarantine.
If you live in the same house and haven't isolated yourselves, I guess you're stuck in quarantine for as long as the sick person is isolated—so basically their 10 days plus an extra 10 days after that.

Isn't it usually about two days before the first symptoms show up?
The kid in daycare who tested positive was last there on Wednesday, but everyone who was around him since Monday is heading in for testing.

When my kid had to quarantine, they counted it starting 2 days before any symptoms actually popped up in
one of his classmates.
So, technically, that was already day one of his isolation.

So, is the first day of quarantine Tuesday for you guys?
Our little one’s last day at daycare was Monday, and they counted Tuesday as our first day of isolation.

Day one of daycare for us falls on Thursday, mostly because my little guy was actually in on Wednesday (he skipped Monday and Tuesday).
For the kid who only made it in on Monday, day one of daycare starts on Tuesday.

Basically, they calculate the quarantine period starting from when you last had contact with someone positive, though they look back at the two days right before those symptoms actually kicked in.
#932 ·
Yeah, you're right.
The fact that symptoms started popping up for everyone just two days before really threw me off; I realized that was when the flu started spreading among you all, which felt weird.
Sorry

The CDC epidemiologist called me personally—they tracked down all the contacts and told me exactly how long everyone in the house had to isolate.

Does anyone know if you actually need a hard copy of your appointment confirmation for the drive-through testing at the Rockefeller site? I don't exactly have a way to get anything printed out right now.
Edit: Turns out it isn't necessary; just received an email confirming that.

What’s the actual relationship between getting vaccinated and having to quarantine?
I received my first dose of the vaccine 9 days ago, but I ended up coming into contact with someone who was positive on the 3rd and 4th day after that first shot.
To wrap things up, my last contact with the infected individual was about 5 days ago.
Does someone who has only had one dose still need to go into isolation?

You don't need the SI unless you got your second vaccine dose more than 14 days ago. Everything else is mandatory.

I'm pretty sure they don't do the contact tracing thing much anymore.
A friend of mine caught COVID about a month ago—his whole household did too, actually. I was hanging out with him right on the day he got his positive result, but nobody ever asked me about who else he’d been around. The only people who stayed home were his family since they live under the same roof, so that goes without saying, I guess.
Also, my brother's girlfriend lives with him and she caught it at school, but they just told her to isolate and didn't even bother asking who she lives with.

Out in Washington, D.C., they’re hunting for contacts; at least, that was the case when I was approached just two weeks ago. I received a call from an epidemiologist right after my test came back positive.
