What do you mean it's not her job? You’re supposed to check with your doctor to get your isolation period or sick leave sorted out if you actually need it. Epidemiologists don't go around calling people individually. You just get the general guidelines.
It's all laid out clearly enough regarding how to count the days, too.

Well, an epidemiologist actually called me, and then my husband and my little one got this massive info dump via email regarding the SI. It’s strange because none of my other colleagues who tested positive in this current round were contacted at all, so I honestly have no clue what determines who gets a call and who doesn't.

I’ve been in close contact with someone who tested positive. I haven't received any official notification from the CDC telling me I need to quarantine; they just told me I'd likely be listed as a close contact. Does the CDC actually reach out to people, or is it enough if the person who tested positive tells me I should stay home? My boss is saying I should just show up to work unless I get an official call. 🤦 How am I supposed to know if I'm on some contact tracing list? You never know how things are being handled behind the scenes...

I mean, anyone could claim anyone else is a contact, right? And if you don't get an official notice saying you're in quarantine, how are you even going to qualify for sick leave?
In my case, I'm currently in isolation, and the CDC actually called me to ask about my contacts.

A colleague mentioned he had to provide some contact info, though I'm not entirely sure how that works. He listed me as a contact since we were working side-by-side for the last two days. I have no clue what the protocol is here. If he submitted everything online, am I just sitting in some database now, or should I expect a call from someone else? I'd really rather not show up to work tomorrow only to have the local police show up to check if I'm actually under quarantine.

You should receive an email from the CDC regarding your specific isolation period through date xy. Besides, the police aren't really out there checking those things anymore.

It's not like they reach out to everyone. They haven't contacted me once. I guess there's just no way they can physically manage to cover that many sick people and all those contacts.

But then how does anyone actually qualify for sick leave or quarantine orders? I mean, it seems like anyone could just walk into their doctor's office and claim they were a close contact because they know some coworker or neighbor with COVID, right? And suddenly, you've got a few days off...

I’m totally lost on this too. A colleague told me they didn't even track any names—like, nobody asked them for a list of contacts. They said I’d have to be the one to proactively call my own doctor and report that I was around someone positive. Which basically means I could easily just stay quiet and pretend nothing happened. On the flip side, you've got people who can just say they were an exposure contact and score ten days off at home.

If you’re sitting there wondering whether you actually need to quarantine or if you can just carry on with your life—well, I suppose you could check out https://www.cdc.gov. It’s a website where you can find out quite easily if you should be isolating, how many days that might take, and things of that nature. 😉

The site basically walks you through some simple steps to get recommendations on what to do regarding sick individuals, anyone who has been in close contact with them, and general info about when you can finally end your isolation or quarantine period.

Almost everyone in our household tested positive today, though we’re all staying incredibly upbeat about it... They just notified us that the results came back positive and told us to reach out to our primary care physician or the local health department to coordinate our isolation period.
I tried calling the clinic, but they ended up routing my call over to the public health officials. When I finally got through to them, they mentioned we were already on their list and instructed me to wait for their call, but so far, there hasn't been any word...

Hey everyone.
I’m trying to figure out exactly how much longer I need to be stuck in isolation. I had direct contact with someone who tested positive, and now I’m sitting here in limbo because nobody actually reached out to give me instructions. I’ve been checking my official government portal, but there isn't a single notification or update waiting for me in the system. Does anyone know if calling the local police department is a viable option, since they supposedly have access to those records? Or does anyone have a better suggestion for where to look?

Well, who exactly ordered the quarantine? They should have given you the duration at the same time.

Your primary care physician actually has access to all the quarantine data and isolation records, so honestly, just give them a call and they should be able to walk you through everything.

Why does the isolation period seem shorter for vaccinated folks compared to everyone else?

If someone who’s been vaccinated catches COVID, aren't they still contagious after a week anyway?!

And why isn't there a mandatory quarantine for vaccinated people after they've been around someone sick—meaning they can just head straight to work even if they have family members battling COVID and they themselves are feeling a bit under the weather?

Also, is it actually necessary to re-test once that isolation period is up? If not, how are we supposed to know when someone is officially out of the woods and no longer spreading it?

Honestly, I’m drowning in questions and nothing makes sense anymore... I work in a client-facing role and need to be going to people's houses, but with all the conflicting info flying around, it feels totally illogical. It honestly makes me want to just stay hunkered down at home working remotely forever seeing how people act and these completely nonsensical calls being made. 👎

How reasonable is it to ask someone who's vaccinated or has already had it to take a test, especially if I'm willing to show my own negative result just to get through the door?

Sorry for the interrogation, but everything just feels so incredibly blurry right now!!!

Does the isolation period actually start counting from when you first feel like garbage, or does it officially kick off once that PCR test comes back positive?

It begins the moment those first symptoms show up...

With 18,000 positive cases (based on PCR and rapid tests at the doctor, not those cheap home kits), nobody is even bothering to call you.
Epidemiologists are out here sending notices to schools and daycares a full week late.
Your family doctor should be the one calling the shots on quarantine, but they're basically washing their hands of it. They claim it's not their job, they don't know the current rules, or they're just too terrified of angry patients breathing down their necks...
Unfortunately, people who actually need to be isolating are just wandering around everywhere.

It's a total mess with people living unvaccinated in households with sick family members. They don't seem to grasp that their isolation doesn't end when the sick person is done; it ends 10 days after the last contact. And that last contact counts as Day Zero (so, say, 7 days of isolation for the patient plus another 10, since nobody in the house actually stays isolated—everyone just hangs out with the sick person the whole time).

The logic is that people with three doses clear the virus from their mucous membranes faster. They carry less of it, so they aren't contagious for as long and don't get hit as hard.

Same answer as before. Lower viral load, faster clearance. If the illness is mild and symptoms are gone, they're considered non-contagious after 7 days.

And why don't vaccinated people have to quarantine after being exposed, or go to work even when people at home are sick with COVID—especially when some of them feel crappy and head into the office anyway?
They go to work while symptomatic because they're irresponsible or just uninformed.
Regarding the first part of the question—
It’s the same answer as the previous two questions, plus there's the whole push to promote vaccination.

Quote:>>
agathos says: >>
Also, is it necessary to test again once quarantine is over? If not, how can anyone actually know if the person isn't contagious anymore?
It's not necessary. You're assumed non-contagious once the required isolation period passes and you're symptom-free, like no more fever.

Healthcare workers get tested before heading back to work.
They're required to wear an N95 if they're vaccinated and were exposed, and they end up doing multiple tests anyway.

I have so many questions and things are just unclear... I work with people, I have to go to their homes, and I'm hearing all sorts of stuff that makes zero sense anymore. Honestly, seeing how people act and the nonsensical decisions being made, I feel like just staying home and working remotely indefinitely.👎>
>
No need to stress about Omicron. Omicron is basically just respiratory congestion right now (a cold is a cold without a fever; respiratory congestion is a cold plus a fever).
If you're worried, you can always just wear an N95 when dealing with people.

How much can I realistically push someone who’s already vaccinated or recovered to take a test? Like, if I show them my own negative result first just to make it fair, is that even okay?
It's not.
Bad news: you don't have any leverage to demand a test. Plus, getting one is a total headache anyway—they're pricey and hard to find when you actually need them.
Just tell them they need to wear a mask. And you
should probably stick to an N95 if you're that worried.

Well, I suppose that's Day Zero—and then you have ten more days following that. So, essentially, it starts when the symptoms show up.
Unless it's a PCR result—in which case, if you aren't even showing any symptoms, that's your starting point, I guess.
