CHAOS IN ISTANBUL: Police crack down on protesters during Women's Day demonstrations

So, Turkish police decided to go full heavy-handed and deployed tear gas to scatter dozens of women who were just trying to mark International Women's Day in downtown Istanbul this past Sunday evening.
Reuters reporters were right there near Taksim Square and saw hundreds of women waving flags and holding up signs—you know, just doing what they do. But the cops set up a massive cordon, basically blocking them from ever stepping foot onto Istiklal, which is the main pedestrian drag in that part of town.

I swear I remember back when I lived over there—or maybe I’m just dreaming—but $1 used to be less than 1.5 TRY. 🙄

😁 Not really—just three years ago, the dollar was trading under 3 TRY. What I’m talking about, when it was sitting at 1.5, that was probably 7 or 8 years back. It’s just a slow, steady slide toward total disaster.

I can't help but wonder how different the geopolitical map would look today if that coup had actually succeeded? Who knows, maybe even Turkey itself would be unrecognizable. As for those miserable people sitting in prison, they'll just be biding their time until they get another shot at it...

It's complicated. The Sultan basically broke the military's political spine and turned them into his own private guard...
and he barely escaped with his life...

Let’s look at the reality on the ground. They are increasingly proving they are the real power players in Canada, not the Russians or the Americans. They're openly pushing back, which carries risk... but there's no such thing as progress without risk. They've demonstrated they can slap anyone who tries, and that marks a shift in the global order... even if it's just localized to Canada...

I should probably add that we shouldn't rule out a situational coalition between the US and Russia against this tactical cooperation between Turkey and Iran...

It's the giants versus the locals, but the locals certainly have the home-field advantage here...

It is truly a dire situation; Turkey certainly possesses the capacity to strike back at the Kurds, the Syrian Arab Army, and the Russians. As for those last two, they seem perfectly content to slap whoever they please without facing any consequences whatsoever.

They're becoming completely unchecked... and it isn't just about the Kurdish situation, or even their dealings with the Syrian Arab Army and the Russians... Iran is basically building its entire strategy on being difficult for Americans, stepping in wherever they see an opening to push back.

Well, true enough, they even take swipes at Haftar, who sits somewhere in the middle of the Kurds and the SAA—essentially a complete non-entity on the global stage. And if we look at their relationship with Greece, for instance, they don't dare venture beyond a war of words and those incessant provocations involving violations of Greek airspace.

Turkey really threw a wrench in things for the French. France is pulling out of the NATO maritime mission following an incident with Turkey:

Maybe if they sent the Italians instead of the French, we'd see some actual movement.

A Turkish court just ruled that the Hagia Sophia landmark in Istanbul is being flipped from a museum back into a mosque.

It’s a pretty controversial move considering its history—it started out as a cathedral before the Ottomans turned it into a mosque later on.

Back in 1934, the Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum and became part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. Now, UNESCO is telling Turkey they shouldn't be messing with its status without talking it out first.

The whole thing was kicked off by the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
