Thoughts on Thor: Love and Thunder?

So, this is probably going to be the same disaster we've seen with all the previous Thor movies. It’ll likely end up being the worst series in the entire Marvel lineup.

Man, I am seriously hyped for this movie 🙂

Personally, I feel like Taika Waititi kind of ruined Thor. Thor 3 holds such huge weight within the MCU, but Taika just undercut it all with the constant jokes. For me, I actually rank Thor 2 very high, and Thor 1 is right up there with it.

Don't get me wrong, I like humor, but I hate it when it's overdone. You have Odin, who is one of the most crucial figures in the MCU, dying—and then almost immediately after, you get this ridiculous humor in Sakaar. Or when Skurge is explaining Midgardian trophies to the women. What kind of stupid joke is that? Is this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III? Wait, let me bold that...

What Taika is doing to Thor—despite the fact that the script itself is actually solid—is tough to watch. When you look at the structure, Thor 3 is perfect. Loki is pretending to be the King of Asgard, Thor is trying to wrap things up after Age of Ultron, Odin dies, Thor finds out who really ruled Asgard after Thor 2, Hela breaks free, Sakaar brings us Hulk-like vibes, and to save Asgard from Hela, they have to trigger Ragnarok. You look at that and think, Wow. This is great. And then suddenly, you see a drunk Valkyrie, Skurge acting like an idiot, and just general madness in Asgard. This isn't TMNT III.

I mean, Taika crossed a line here, and a big one too. He made a genuinely good Darkness-level film, but he smeared it with bad comedy.

So, from what I can see, Thor 4 will probably have that same Darkness-level script, but my heart will feel like I'm watching TMNT III again. Kids might love it, just like they did with TMNT III, but those of us who grew up loving the MCU might not. And I doubt the general audience will either.

I kind of blame Iron Man 3 for this trend; it was that first experiment where the MCU released a film packed with excessive humor, and most people didn't vibe with it. Age of Ultron had everything, sure, but we also got a ton of unnecessary jokes while people were literally dying in Sokovia. Now, the Guardians of the Galaxy movies were built for humor—it works there. Ant-Man is similar, though Ant-Man and the Wasp probably should have been a bit more serious, but since the general public doesn't always gravitate toward Ant-Man anyway, they use humor to win them over. Honestly, Paul Rudd is perfect for that role; not using Paul's talent would be a crime.

The saddest part is that after Thor 2, almost nobody cared about the whole buildup. I respect that Taika saved Thor with Ragnarok, but I'm worried Thor 4 is going to keep following that specific momentum, which I really don't like.

I know that during my first viewing, I'll probably be excited, but once the dust settles, I might not have the energy to watch it again.

Will Thor 4 end up being TMNT III? We'll see...

Since Waititi is at the helm, I suppose I should probably brace myself for more of the Thor franchise being dismantled by that forced sense of humor he utilized during Ragnarok.

Look, the one Waititi directed is actually solid—honestly one of the better MCU movies in my book. Even the general consensus online backs that up, so this hate feels pretty baseless to me. ☕

I'm looking forward to it. I'm especially curious to see Bale step into a villain role.

Are you talking about the era before or after Avengers: Infinity War?

Everything really started spiraling in Ragnarok—they just went way too far with Infinity War and Endgame.

I didn't say anything about the humor in his other films, but in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I suppose it was just a bit much. "Ragnarok" really should have been this pivotal Thor film; you have Odin dying, Hela arriving, the destruction of Asgard, an exodus... yet, I find myself remembering the movie mostly for those forced gags popping up every few minutes.

I’m honestly a little worried about what they’re going to do to Thor. They’ve already beaten him down so much that at this point, watching them further tear him apart—both physically and mentally—just to turn him into some dumb white sidekick for a superior warrior feels borderline sadistic.

I get the feeling he tries way too hard with the jokes sometimes, especially when the moment just doesn't call for it. He can be funny when he actually lands one, but when he misses? It’s just awkward... Honestly, Reddit is pretty terrible—maybe because I actually read the book, and what he did there was basically just a lazy mess. I thought Thor 3 was alright, but that doesn't say much since the whole series is kind of weak to me. The first one was just okay, a total middle-of-the-road attempt at copying the Iron Man formula, just without half the charm. The second one was... god, I don't even remember exactly what happened, it wasn't even memorable. The third one stood out mostly because it felt like a borderline parody.

In my opinion, both Thor 1 and Thor 2 missed the mark because they lacked any sense of gravity. At least Thor 3 decided to pivot toward a different tone, which made it incredibly fun and genuinely funny. If Marvel isn't going to commit to serious storytelling, they might as well lean fully into pure entertainment, much like Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy 1, and Thor 3.
The only truly serious films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are Captain America 2 and perhaps Iron Man 1, though even that is debatable given how the first installment played out.

So, this movie picks up right after we last saw Thor in Endgame. We don't have all the gritty details on the plot just yet, but we do know Natalie Portman is back as Jane Foster, stepping into that Mighty Thor role from the comics. Plus, the Guardians of the Galaxy are set to show up, and Christian Bale is playing Gorr.

If the rumors are actually true, we might see the first teaser or trailer dropping next week. It would be pretty awesome if that happens 🙂

This officially takes the top spot as the Marvel Cinematic Universe film with the shortest gap between its trailer drop and the actual release. Honestly, I’m curious why they usually make us wait so long—maybe it's just because this one picks up right where Doctor Strange 2 left off.

To make things better—or worse—they’re only two months apart. I feel like they can afford to be a bit risky with the Thor marketing since he’s the only one from the original Avengers who still gets consistent solo movies. Plus, Marvel is in a tough spot. They don't have much breathing room for Thor's promo when they're still riding the Spider-Man 3 hype, all while Doctor Strange 2 is being teased and Moon Knight is currently airing.
