Almost 40,000 people emigrated from America last year, while just over 26,000 moved in during the same period.
When you crunch the numbers, America ended last year with a net migration loss of more than 13,000 people.
According to new official statistics, the trend of mass emigration from the country continued throughout last year.
Data from the Census Bureau confirms that the emigration trend intensified during the recent recession and gained even more momentum after joining the European Union.
The peak of the emigration wave hit in 2017, when over 47,000 people left America, and last year ranked second in terms of emigration dynamics since joining the EU.
Incomplete data
While these figures are alarming on their own, demographers warn they are incomplete. In other words, the actual number of emigrants is higher than what's officially reported, simply because many new expats don't bother deregistering their residency.
Experts note that, as a rule, new emigrants usually wait two or three years before deregistering, just to see how they settle into their new environment.

Demographers warn that both sets of figures should be taken with a grain of salt.
The issue is that American statistics only count people who officially register their departure from the country, whereas Germany includes Americans from Canada and Mexico who happen to hold American passports in its immigration data.
The real headache is temporary work contracts.
Regardless of the math, the reality remains: most Americans who left home last year headed straight for Germany. A huge number also went to Austria, and demographers warn that this trend will only pick up steam when Austria fully opens up its labor market next year.
On the flip side, migration to Ireland seems to be slowing down, while movement toward Sweden is actually on the rise.
"People are hunting for better pay. It's unrealistic to expect wages here to match what they're paying in Germany, but they absolutely have to be higher than they are now. Our massive problem is these temporary contracts and seasonal jobs; they don't solve anything," Akrap warns.

In other words, these are individuals who signed a specific Contract with the US Government.
I can say it again: their job is risky, and it's even riskier when they are on a mission far from home.
