So, you're already succumbing to that Southern temperament, are you? ๐Ÿ˜

Where did this sudden sense of self-importance come from? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh, come onโ€”I know exactly why she made that move... and honestly, I think she realized a few things a little too late. But hey, it is what it is now. She'll adjust, don't you worry!

Iโ€™m throwing this out there casually, but Iโ€™ve been thinking about expanding my business into bookkeeping. Iโ€™m looking for someone with real experience for a potential partnership or collaboration. To be clear, the operation would be based in Chicago. I can provide full IT supportโ€”I own an IT firm, ๐Ÿ™‚โ€”along with the necessary accounting software. Now that I've put myself out there, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this ๐Ÿ™‚

Itโ€™s hardly a gold mine anymore...
accounting fees just seem to be in a constant state of freefall...
which inevitably forces you into a corner where you have to cut corners just to maintain a decent client list and keep the lights on...
the problem is, accounting is one of those fields where sloppiness is an absolute non-starter...
not to mention the endless headache of managing staff; if they actually possess any real skill, they demand a massive salary, but if they don't, they go out and sign a new client only to leave everything in total disarray, leaving the firm owner to pick up the pieces...

so, yeah... it's a bit of a mess...

I haven't noticed any dip in accounting salaries! If anything, it seems to me theyโ€™re actually going up. I don't see why they shouldn't command high pay if they actually know what they're doing; besides, when it comes to liability, they're shielded from everything anyway.

Letโ€™s be real, accountants just can't charge what they're actually worth anymore, especially with the economy being such a dumpster fire. The rules change basically every five minutes. Like good old Greg says, it's a joke.

In the end, it always plays out the same way: you get swamped with clients, everyone expects a massive discount, and you end up drowning in busywork that should be simple. But no, because Uncle Sam wants a million different forms for every single tiny thing... so we just end up in total chaos.

I agree that monetization is a struggle, but Iโ€™m still convinced you can make a living at it even if you're just a small player. Personally, I don't even need to live off it; I just want to offset my own expenses enough to make it worth the effort.

It feels like you don't actually need our input here; you just need someone to call you back about the job.
Youโ€™ve already made up your mind, so now you're just hunting for someone willing to put in the hours. If you're looking to hire a fully independent worker, you're looking at a salary expense of roughly $3333. Good luck ๐Ÿ˜‰

I haven't made up my mind yet! Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t value everyone's input, but it seems like all I'm getting is negativity. I guess that's why this country is such a messโ€”nobody wants to take any actual responsibility! Anyway, whatever. Thanks for the feedback; I was just trying to make a case for the positive side of things

The negativity stems from lived experience...
One shouldn't forget that accountability comes at a price. If you expect someone to actually care about their work and take ownership of their results, you have to pay them accordingly. When an accountant is fairly compensated, they work with purpose and diligence; when they aren't, they simply stop caring...
In the US, most accounting firms tend to hire entry-level trainees who are willing to work for peanuts... but can you really expect high quality under those conditions?

I actually work in this field, just like Grice and ladybug. So, I'm not really sure how that comment is supposed to apply to us.
We've spent years in the trenches of this industry, which gives us the perspective to call things as they are. But according to you, that's just being "negative." Interesting.

By all means, carry on! Brilliant idea! Hats off to your entrepreneurial spirit! ๐Ÿ‘

I wasn't aiming this at you; I'm just already feeling pretty bitter about the whole thing! It doesn't matter. Maybe Iโ€™m overstepping by trying to play philosopher where I don't belong. My apologies.

Look, Iโ€™m not saying thereโ€™s anything wrong with talking shop. Swapping ideas, sharing what we've learned, and venting about future plans is actually pretty valuable.
The issue is youโ€™re trying to map out a business in an industry you don't know yet, which is a bit of a minefield. In this line of work, you need massive amounts of grit, expertise, and patience just to survive an environment where federal regulations and tax laws seem to change practically every single morning.
That whole "learning curve" phaseโ€”which can easily swallow up several days of your lifeโ€”is something no client is ever going to cut you a check for. Thatโ€™s on you. Itโ€™s your job to stay ahead of the curve and deliver the final result at the price you originally agreed upon.
Letโ€™s say you set up a contract where you charge a flat fee per employee, like $33. When the IRS changes a filing requirement or a software update forces you to relearn a workflow, the client isn't going to pay you extra for the time you spent studying those changes. Theyโ€™re still just going to hand you $33 per head, even if you spent half your entire month just figuring out how to run payroll "the new way." See where I'm coming from?
Thatโ€™s exactly why people told you the margins are thin. Youโ€™re burning through an incredible amount of mental energy just keeping pace with the shifting rules, and you can't bill for that effort.

Thatโ€™s absolutely true. I know for a fact that everyone over in accounting right now is losing their minds over this. Plus, we've been dealing with these constant IRS filing glitches for daysโ€”the same issues I've tried to fix at the start of the week only to have them pop up again. You definitely can't bill for that kind of wasted time. Maybe it's better if I just stay completely out of that department. I'll have to think about whether I even want to deal with this headache at all.

lili p.! ๐Ÿ˜

is it just me, or did your username change color????????
Get that hair dyed immediately!!!!!
That shade suits you better (and I prefer it too, ๐Ÿ™‚).

Or maybe we're all just doomed? We can barely manage to see our own families here, let alone anything else.
My folks are already on my case. They want me home in the real world, not stuck in this virtual one.

I keep thinking about turning a new leafโ€”one with fewer Google searches, fewer sales taxes, fewer income taxes, fewer IP addresses... maybe then I'll actually look back on this with some fondness... though probably not.๐Ÿ™‚

Once finals are over, Iโ€™m seriously considering a change in "perspective." Thereโ€™s wisdom in that old saying: less is more. ๐Ÿ˜

I won't need to change my handle... just start taking it seriously (both the imagery and the content).

Hey Apis, Iโ€™m feeling a bit underwater lately. Just a whole lot of gloom ๐Ÿ˜‰

This year has been a total grind, too. Just one thing after another... constant chaos. I'm finally counting down the days until I can take some much-needed time off.
I can barely keep my head above water. It feels like I'm constantly playing catch-up, sprinting toward deadlines like a madwoman. ๐Ÿ˜ข

How does that rental income section work in the supplemental info?
I canโ€™t for the life of me remember how I filed it last year to make it stick.
Just spinning my wheels with these tax forms... zero progress. ๐Ÿคท
I think you dealt with something similar last year, too.
