I'm pretty sure it'll auto-renew starting April 13th. You might want to hit up the bank on the 13th just to be safe, though you'd probably only miss out on a tiny bit of interest for that one day—hardly worth stressing about. 🙂

I actually just renewed one of those Ally Bank deposits myself (in USD) and showed up a day after it matured, and everything went totally smooth.

Question. I’m still using a Student account, and honestly, it feels wrong to "cheat" them since I graduated ages ago... they aren't checking, but I'm neither a student (to reiterate) nor do I want any legal headaches down the road.

What should my next move be? Online and mobile banking are non-negotiable. I looked into their various tiers and assistants, and here's my takeaway: the basic assistant package is $10, while the premium tier is twice as expensive. However, for that extra $10, the premium version includes a checking account, a no-annual-fee Mastercard, enrollment fees, all those insurance perks, and free transactions. There’s also a perk for home loans, which would be useful in a few years...

So, if I pair the basic assistant with a checking account, it comes to $12, leaving a gap of $8.25. On the other hand, I could just get the Mastercard, which essentially means paying an annual fee through that $8.25 difference... if you catch my drift.

Basically—based on what you've seen, do you think it's worth upgrading?

Thanks in advance. 🙂

It’s probably best to just crunch the numbers on what you actually need... 🤷

The annual fee for the Mastercard is $50 / $4.25 per month
You get 15 free transactions when paying through online banking... otherwise, each transaction runs you $1, or rather $0.67, depending on which bank you're sending money to... if you're paying, say, 10 bills a month, and 5 of them cost $0.33 and 5 cost $2... that brings you to $5.00...
The monthly maintenance fee for the checking account is $1.75...
All told, that comes to $11... plus those $10 for the "premium assistant" service...

It doesn't seem worth it to me. 😢

My checking account card works perfectly fine for online shopping. I'm only paying maybe 2. a month for it. I don't really need a 2. VISA, though I figured if it was included in the package, it might be handy to have just in case. That Visa card seemed decent because of the extra insurance coverage... plus, with that active assistant feature $10, the 35 with the checking account makes it feel like $8.25 there isn't much difference compared to the Visa card, which offers quite a bit more...

I've looked into other banks, but I've always been with JPMorgan Chase and I'm used to them; the others don't offer perks that seem as useful. When I add up everything I actually need, it ends up being more expensive anyway.

If you aren't paying bills through it and you don't really need a Mastercard, then it really isn't worth the money...😉

Thanks. Before you said that, I figured I'd just get a Master card to be safe, but it’s definitely too much effort $20 right now. I'll just hire an assistant instead. 🙂

So, I’m sitting here looking at my statement and wondering why on earth I was charged a fee for setting up a standard recurring transfer. I have a Zaba fan account, and according to the website, setting up these transfers is supposed to be completely free if the destination is an account held within JPMorgan Chase or the Group. Since the receiving account is right there at JPMorgan Chase, the math just isn't adding up for me. Why am I being hit with this charge when it clearly states otherwise?

Thanks

Does anyone know what kind of paperwork I actually need to bring to close out my Zaba fan? Also, will it be an issue if I haven't been enrolled in school for a while now?

Back again. 😬

Right now, I’m looking at the Chase Premier package. My son just graduated and landed a job. Since I'm between roles, we're thinking about a little swap: he takes the Premier account to cover his Master's expenses, and in exchange, I get power of attorney over his checking and credit accounts. Meanwhile, I’ll grab an Active Assistant plan because having access to Chase and Bank of America is non-negotiable for me. From what I’ve read, the monthly fee for power of attorney on an account is roughly $0.67. Not a huge deal.

How did you all handle joint family accounts? I looked into the Family bundle, but they don't offer Bank of America there (you can top it up, I guess), and they don't include free transactions. Everything else is in the Family Plus tier, but that costs $40/month, which is way too steep.

So, we both need checking, access to Chase and BofA, power of attorney, and transaction coverage—plus his Mastercard. I asked my advisor at Chase for a recommendation, and naturally, they tried to push the Family Plus version on me. The most expensive option. 😁

Look, the kid should just grab a Zaba fan and give you full power of attorney on the account along with an extra master card. On your end, just wrap up your services and hand him the POA. That way, you’re only paying for the Zaba fan and whatever fee she charges for the paperwork.

True, but I need my own checking account. It seems like the only way is to hire an active assistant and give them power of attorney, which would run us about $15 a month. According to the staff, family bundles are the only ones offering two separate accounts, but the standard ones for $20 don't come with a Zaba fan or free transactions... I was just wondering how others manage that specific setup.

Look, my point is you just give him power of attorney. That way you have full visibility and can pull funds from both accounts. You don't even need a payment assistant if you've got that authorization; you'll have access to everything, plus you can tap into his 15 free monthly transactions. It doesn't matter which account the money is coming from. Get it now? 😉

I hear you, 🙂, but I’m still struggling to wrap my head around how my current checking account stays mine based on what the folks at Chase told me. Are you suggesting they'll just "repurpose" my existing account into a joint one? So he gets full control, and I get access to his through my own account? Then I give him access to mine for $0.67/month, and we both just use the perks since I'd be an authorized user on his side?

My apologies, I know I'm making this complicated. It's just that whenever I ask anything at Chase, they don't actually answer the question; they just try to upsell me on the most expensive services. Of course, that's business, but their website and fee schedules aren't exactly clear on these specifics.

Thanks anyway. 🙂

Look, try this instead:
The guy opens a dynamic fan account that comes with free memberships, plus e-banking and m-banking. You just give him power of attorney over your account. That way, he can see everything you’ve got and pay bills directly from your balance, while still using his own e-banking and m-banking tools included in the package. Your main checking account stays exactly how it is—no extra fees or bundled services needed. He covers the cost of the dynamic fan, and you just handle the standard maintenance fee and $0.67 the power of attorney. There's zero need for two separate e-banking setups. Makes sense now?

It makes sense now. 😁 You’re absolutely right; it didn't occur to me that we wouldn't need two separate Zaba fans, but your point about them trying to squeeze extra fees out of us for something useless is spot on. 😬

Thanks again. 🙂

Just a quick heads-up, since I don't think all the staff at Zaba know this themselves:

If you look at the Zaba fan or the "All-in-One" packages, it might seem like there aren't any extra fees for withdrawing cash from JPMorgan Chase ATMs in Italy—or any of the other countries on their list.

But honestly, that's not really the case. If you're using a EUR Visa Electron card linked to one of those foreign currency accounts, they'll hit you with a commission fee.

The only way to avoid that specific fee is by using a debit card tied to a US dollar checking account, but even then, they make their money back on the conversion rate, which is just their standard retail rate.

It was pretty strange, actually—when I asked at the branch in downtown Chicago on Jury's street, the teller didn't seem to grasp my question at all. She almost "politely" brushed me off, acting like it wasn't her problem.

I asked if she could grab someone more experienced, and while her colleague initially insisted it wasn't possible, after double-checking, she did confirm that, unfortunately, my suspicion was right.

(Posting this here specifically for the ATM and Zaba fan groups)

Hi there. I apologize if this isn't quite the right place for this, but it felt like the most logical spot to start.

I’m currently working on a project for a Case Study Competition involving JPMorgan Chase. As part of my analysis, I need to gather some data through a survey, and I'm aiming for at least 200 responses to make it meaningful. The questions are pretty broad—mostly covering general finance, banking services, and basic lifestyle habits. It’s completely anonymous, and I promise it’s quick and easy. I would be incredibly grateful if you could spare just two or three minutes of your time to fill it out.

Again, my apologies if this post is out of place!

Thanks! 🙂

If you're booking one of Zabin's catering spreads, is it more like a buffet where you just grab what you need, or are you stuck taking everything on the menu? 🙂
