Does it actually have to be that way? Every Chase Bank package offers specific perks you can take advantage of. Whether you end up using just one feature or every single benefit included, the monthly premium remains exactly the same. For instance, I carry the flexible plan, which covers things like travel insurance, roadside assistance, home repairs, and so on. If I need them, I use them; if not, I don't. But regardless of my actual usage, I am paying the same monthly fee either way. Just pick the option that makes the most sense for you.

I just don't get this whole banking fee thing.
Right now I'm on a student account package, but my Maestro card and that specific student deal are both about to expire.
The fees are $1.75 for the student plan and $1.75 just for "managing" the checking account.
So we're talking $3.25 every single month.

When it comes time to renew, do I have to switch to a different type of account?
The standard one is $18 a month, which adds up to almost $110 a year. Fuck you, Zaba fan. Not happening.

As far as services go, I just use the mobile app and my Maestro card. Maybe I'll bother setting up a Visa Electron one day, but I don't really need it yet.
All this extra crap—roadside assistance, travel insurance, savings perks, loans, help with this and that—it's all useless to me.

I noticed at Chase my mom just has a basic checking account and a Visa Electron card that she uses to hit the ATM and log into online banking.
She doesn't even have a formal checking account setup. Is this a new thing where individuals don't even need a traditional checking account anymore? I'm totally out of the loop here...
The fee for all that is $11.
That's actually somewhat reasonable.
How do other banks handle these monthly service fees?

You’ve got a full suite of payment assistants at Chase for $10—checking, savings, online banking, and their business accounts. Plus, there's just your standard checking account for $3.25 🤷

I use Chase for my checking account—got online banking and a Visa Electron debit card set up for $6.75 a month. Honestly, it’s pretty cheap for me 😁

Which specific package or service are you referring to?

What they’re calling this "package": A modern payment assistant

It just hit me—about a year ago, I got a call from some lady at Chase about closing my account. I'm just checking in! Hope everyone's having a good one. My digital wallet assistant? Honestly, such a lifesaver lately.$6.75And yeah! I gotta go. Swing by the branch so they can switch you over to that new one! I'm active! My digital wallet assistant just saved my life! Seriously, such a lifesaver.$10So, I actually shot an email over to Zambia to check on things. They got back to me and said there's no need for me to pick up that new one. $10 Can I just keep using this old one? If so, I’m totally fine with keeping my payments going. $6.75 Monthly costs for all the options here, just like this one too. $10.

Aktivan offers a few more features than Modern, but honestly, who cares? Modern isn't even on the table right now anyway. 🙂

Thanks. I was asking because the minimum requirement is currently 30 for the "Active" payment assistant.

So, I just finished setting up a transfer through my Zaba fan account—filled out all the info, pushed the transaction through—and now it’s telling me I need to provide proof of payment. Like, what am I even supposed to send them?? When I go into my transaction history, I can see the whole list of stuff, but for some reason, I can't actually click on the specific transaction they're asking about... just sits there staring at me.

Once they started charging me service fees despite my "All-in-One" bundle—it was simply unacceptable—I moved my accounts to a different bank after fifteen years with ZAG.

Well, if you look beyond just the basic transaction history, there is a dedicated Payment Overview section. If you open up the individual payment entry there, you should see an option at the bottom to request a confirmation via email for free, or even by mail if you prefer!$1.75.

So, my bank is pushing this "student package" on me. Since I'm still hitting the books, they’re offering to waive that monthly maintenance fee of $1.75, throw in a debit card, and even let me dip into an overdraft of up to $667. It sounds like a sweet deal on paper, but I can't help but wonder about the fine print. Specifically, if I actually end up in the red, how exactly do they force you to pay them back when most students are basically living on ramen and zero steady income? I’ve been digging through their site, but I can't find a straight answer on whether they charge interest on those overdrafts or if they just toss us a bone for a little while—though, honestly, I highly doubt they're doing me any favors.

Forcing someone to pay back money works like this: once you land a job, the IRS can basically freeze your accounts and just snatch the payments straight from your paycheck. Until then, that debt is just going to keep snowballing. Plus, it’ll totally tank your credit score if you ever try to get a loan down the road, so don't be reckless. 🙂

The standard interest rate for the overdraft in that package is 9.99% APR.

So, what I'm hearing is if I take out $333 right now and clear it before the end of the year, I won't get hit with any interest? Look, excuse my ignorance here—I’m definitely not an expert in the murky waters of banking... But if I pull $1,000, am I basically looking at owing $1,100 by December? Just trying to wrap my head around it.

You have to settle that negative balance before the deadline hits. If you're dealing with Chase, they’ll slap you with a 10.05% annual interest rate. And trust me, they don't play around. First, you get the phone calls. Then comes the legal enforcement. Once they serve you with an order, the IRS can just swoop in and drain whatever cash you have sitting in any bank account. On top of that, everything gets logged in your credit report. By the time you factor in notary fees and all the extra legal costs, that tiny debt could easily balloon to five times the original amount. Once that happens, you can kiss any future loans or credit cards from any major bank goodbye.

Of course there is—that's how they stay in business. Interest is quoted as an annual rate, but they charge you for every single day you're over the limit. Whether you're over by one day or a whole year, they're gonna hit you with interest. Obviously, if you're only over for a couple of days, the charge will just be a few bucks.

How much overdraft limit are you guys actually getting through Chase? And what’s the actual process for approval? Do I have to wait for three paychecks to hit, or can I apply right after the first one?

Thanks
