I’m currently about twelve days late for my period, and while I did go ahead and take a pregnancy test, the result came back negative—which is just so confusing, really. I feel like I’m experiencing every single classic symptom of being pregnant, though; I mean, I find myself constantly snacking, and I have these very specific cravings that are totally unlike anything I usually go for. Plus, my bathroom habits have shifted quite a bit, much like they did during my first pregnancy, and I just can't seem to shake this feeling of being overheated all the time, which also feels exactly like how I felt the first time around. I am also feeling significantly more exhausted than usual... and I’ve been so incredibly tearful over the smallest, most trivial things lately. To make matters even more intense, certain smells that I normally wouldn't mind are making me feel quite nauseous, especially in the mornings. My breasts have also become noticeably larger, too. So, I suppose I'm left wondering if I am just imagining things or if these are simply premenstrual symptoms, but I honestly feel like I have this deep intuition that I might actually be pregnant.

Seriously, just get your ass to the OB-GYN ASAP

There’s no need to dwell on the negative. You could just try taking another test in about a week, or better yet, make an appointment with your OB-GYN. 🙂 The test reacts to the hormones released during pregnancy, so it’s entirely possible you got a false negative simply because you tested too early—or, of course, if you aren't pregnant. A false positive isn't really a thing here. 🙂

Everything mentioned above sounds like symptoms of a hormonal imbalance.

You could always grab a different brand of test and try again; there’s a CVS or Walgreens on almost every corner.
Or just wait until Monday and get a blood test at your doctor's office. That'll give you a 100% certain answer.

Yeah, totally forgot to mention that—if you aren't planning on hitting up an OB-GYN right this second, just get the blood work done. It’s way more reliable than those cheap drugstore tests; they can see everything immediately once it's in your system.

False negatives are possible, and you can even run into false positives—though that’s rarer and sometimes linked to certain tumors or even cysts.
That said, a false negative isn't exactly an outlier.
I had a friend who kept getting negative results all the way through her third month of pregnancy.
Go get checked out.

The same thing happened to me when dealing with a cyst... but like you all mentioned, false positive tests can also occur in cases of chemical pregnancies...

The same thing happened to me when I had a cyst... but then again, as you all mentioned, false positive tests can also occur in cases of chemical pregnancies...

My period is 12 days late. I took a test but it was negative, even though I've got all the pregnancy symptoms. I'm constantly hungry, having these weird cravings that aren't like my usual appetite. I'm running to the bathroom just like I did during my first pregnancy, I feel hot all the time, just like before, and I'm more exhausted than usual... I'm getting teary over nothing, and certain smells make me nauseous, especially in the morning. My breasts have gotten noticeably larger, too. Now, I can't tell if I'm just imagining things or if these are PMS symptoms, but I have this gut feeling that I might actually be pregnant.

Same thing happened to me. My OBGYN told me it was just a follicular cyst. They gave me some medication and my period showed up a few days later... it doesn't always mean you're pregnant.

It can happen more often than you think! I’m living proof.

I took a test about a week after my period was due, and it came back a false negative. I'm not sure if it works the other way around—like a false positive—but a false negative is definitely possible. Last month, I was taking Duphastone to help jumpstart my cycle. After calling my doctor, they told me, "Try Duphastone again, two pills a day for seven days." So, I did that, waited another ten days, and still nothing. I went to see my OBGYN feeling totally panicked because the test insisted I wasn't pregnant 🙄. My doctor just looked at me and said, "Bird, congratulations, you're pregnant!" It turns out I was already well into it—about six and a half weeks along 😍😍
.
My advice: just go get an ultrasound and talk to your doctor!

If my memory serves me right, three weeks after M's absence is about the point where you can actually run a reliable test. 🤔

I’ve always found that tracking about three weeks after ovulation is a much more reliable indicator than just waiting for a missed period.

It looks like they’re already saying it'll be back on the first day after the break. This was what I used:
I recently came across some information regarding pregnancy testing through blood work rather than just the standard home kits. It’s interesting how much more detail you can get from a lab analysis compared to those quick sticks you pick up at CVS. If you're looking for precision, checking hormone levels directly is definitely the way to go.

I don't even know anymore... all I know is it's either 3 DAYS or a week after something happens 🤣
honestly, it's probably best to just head down to Planned Parenthood in a week and call it a day...👍

Here’s an article on pregnancy tests... maybe it’ll help someone out.

You could just get a blood draw and check your beta-HCG levels. There's no way to get a false negative like that if you're actually pregnant.

Works!
In both my pregnancies—the first one ended in a miscarriage—my initial tests came back negative right after my period was late, but when I retested a week later, they were positive.

You can just wait a bit longer and try again. I'd suggest using the beta test—if you're actually pregnant, it'll show up sooner.😉
For me, my ovulation happened later, so the test didn't even pick up on day 10... even though it was negative on day 7.
Just retest if you don't see anything yet. Then you'll have some peace of mind.☕☕

Please let us know how the next one goes😉

I did! 😁But honestly, I wasn't just being paranoid for no reason... my last period was incredibly light, which is such a departure from my usual routine since they are typically quite heavy, without fail. Plus, I’ve read quite a bit online about how those lighter spotting episodes can sometimes happen in early pregnancy, so I figured I'd take a test, especially since I was noticing a few other little symptoms too. 🙂

Now, though, I’m actually running late, and I just can't seem to find the courage to go grab another test... I have this constant, nagging feeling that I might start bleeding at any second, so I keep putting it off. 🤷

Well, it turns out it wasn't a false negative after all, because my period finally showed up today... and it was late, like, the latest it has ever been for me. Last month it arrived on the 4th, and then today, so, I guess I wonder if that's normal since my cycle is usually a bit irregular anyway. I've just been such a nervous wreck through all of this, and I haven't even seen my gynecologist in quite a while because I moved to a new city and it's just such a trek now, so I really need to find a new doctor, but everywhere seems to have such massive waiting lists lately. It's funny, isn't it? How it happens when you aren't planning for it, yet when you actually want it, it just doesn't seem to happen so easily...

Anything is possible, really...

It could be cysts—ovarian cysts can cause a total mess with your cycle, sometimes pushing things back by three weeks or more...

The thing is, a doctor might feel something during an exam, but they're rarely 100% sure what they're feeling through a manual check. You really need an ultrasound to know for certain. So, if I were you, I'd just go ahead and ask for a referral for an ultrasound.😉
