Steven Palmer3 said:Man, I’m running into this exact same headache... I've got a Visa business debit card linked to my checking account, right? So I try to book a room at some hotel overseas, and they just flat-out reject the reservation. Then, I go ahead and register that same card with PayPal, and now it’s telling me my PayPal balance is $0.00 USD, even though I definitely have the funds in my bank account...🙂

Well, PayPal doesn't actually have a window into your actual bank account balance, so it isn't going to display that on their site...
It might be showing that because the card hasn't been fully verified yet, but you really should still be able to make purchases with it regardless of that status...

Can I use an Erste Visa Electron card—which is actually linked to my foreign currency account—to pay for things online? It does have that CVV number

I’m looking for a card I'll probably only use maybe 5 or 6 times a year. Mostly just for online stuff here in the States and paying for international file hosting services like RapidShare or Netload—since you can't really use bank transfers for that anymore.
So, I’m not planning on swiping this at grocery stores or using it for travel (like on eBay or Amazon), and I definitely won't be hitting an ATM. I just need it for those occasional payments that my standard e-banking won't cover.
I’ve been digging through some forums, and this prepaid Visa from OTP looks decent, but it seems like I'd have to open a whole new checking account with them, which is a huge pass for me.
Then I saw that Visa has online portals you can fill out, which is great because I don't want to trek down to a branch while I'm stuck on sick leave. Any advice on which one from the link above is best?
Down the road, I might even link it to PayPal
Or is there a better option out there?🤷

The cards from Bank of America are pretty standard stuff—just basic monthly fees and statements. Personally, I’d look into what Hyp offers instead.

So, I’m guessing I have to actually walk into a Hyp branch to open an account? Does it even matter if I use dollars or euros when I'm paying for things online in foreign currencies?

One more thing—since I'm already using their online banking (got an account set up there), can I just transfer money to that Hyp card/account through the app? Or am I stuck going to a branch to drop off cash or hunting down a specific Hyp ATM nearby?

It’s not really a standard checking account since there aren't any fees; it's more like you're just loading cash directly onto the card. You can only make deposits in US dollars.

I haven't a clue about making deposits via Zelle 🤷

...so if I pay with foreign currency, does it just convert automatically?

Yeah. As far as I know, that's how it works with pretty much any credit card you use.

So my mom just got this flyer from JPMorgan Chase about some Mastercard gift card thing. It says it's perfect for online shopping and stuff, but does anyone actually know if I could use one of those to pay for things on the web, like this file hosting site?

There’s already been some talk about this, but since there aren't any names attached, it could be an issue online. It just says payments go directly to a checking account, though I'm not sure if that includes covering the monthly maintenance fees 🤷

Can't find any info on this one. Does anyone know the monthly or yearly fee for this card?

I also need something just for online shopping, ideally with a tiny annual fee.
So, is this the best bet?

No monthly fees here! You just gotta pay $8.25 to open an account and grab your card:

^ thanks! definitely feels worth it 🙂
hey, do they charge any fees for deposits? i know like JPMorgan Chase takes at least $2.00 for checking account deposits :S

PS looking over the card specs, looks like there's no installment plan option. probably because the setup for those cards is more of a headache (and pricier?)

even when she's just transferring money to herself, she still gets hit with fees $2.00

So I finally ditched that hypo card and opened a foreign currency account at JPMorgan Chase today. The rep told me it’s a total game changer—they just rolled out these new Visa Electron cards in the last five months that actually work for online shopping! You can even link them to PayPal and everything, plus they go through the whole 'Verified by Visa' check:

Forgive me for drifting on to the off-topic boards, but I’m honestly at a loss as to where else to pose this question. Does anyone know how to set up my PayPal so I can actually receive funds via email address?
For instance, I have a friend who wants to transfer $33 from her account to mine.

I tried giving her my email to complete the transaction, but she mentioned she couldn't do it because I haven't activated that specific option yet. So, how does one go about activating it?

Please help—this is becoming quite urgent.

I'm not even sure if this is the right spot for this, but I'll just throw it out here and see what happens...

Can you actually find a prepaid credit card for online shopping at a local convenience store or a gas station like you can abroad? Or have the big banks basically staged a hostile takeover of everything so I'm forced to deal with them? Which one is the easiest to set up without getting hit with monthly fees, and more importantly, which one is easy to kill off once I'm done? I only need it to pull the trigger on one specific purchase and then I want it gone forever.

You can grab Paysafecard vouchers in USD at most local convenience stores, like a 7-Eleven or something... just check online for other spots nearby...
Just keep in mind you can't use them everywhere when you're traveling abroad, so definitely check the list first...
They usually have them in $30, $100, and $67
