I don't know how to set up that Windows XP mode you were talking about, I've got Windows 7 Ultimate installed right now because I wanted to swap out the language pack, and some guy on a forum told me you couldn't do that on Professional so that's where I'm at... whatever... if you could help me figure out this mess because I just finished installing this week's updates and haven't even gotten MSN back up yet so... thanks

btw, I was just looking into this and is that what Virtual PC is? If that's what we're talking about, I really wouldn't want to go that route... :S damn, if I can't get it working on Windows 7 somehow, I'll just stick with Windows Live Messenger 2010 and call it a day

"Windows XP mode also requires virtualization software such as Windows Virtual PC."

The latest Windows Live Messenger 2009 update (build 14.0.8117) completely kills the Webcam functionality within the app;

try using build 14.0.8089.726

after that, follow this: Circumventing the latest forced upgrade for Messenger 2009

🙂 to get it working during the week

So, what's the point in downloading it? Probably nothing.

Oh, it's absolutely worth it! If it weren't beneficial, Microsoft wouldn't even bother developing it!

It makes your apps launch way faster.

How do I make a bootable Windows 7 DVD that already has SP1 installed?

It happens whenever I'm just doing basic stuff—like, say, opening a folder in Windows Explorer, or clicking back to a previous window. It’s this sharp, sudden noise... almost like someone just plucked a single, harsh string on a guitar. It’s incredibly grating. I mean, I can't even focus! I really just want to shut it off entirely. Does anyone know the exact steps to disable that specific sound? How do I make it go away for good?

I guess... I mean, if you could actually fix things? If there was a way to make it all work out? It's such a heavy thought, isn't it? Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but sometimes you look at a situation—whether it's a messy software installation or just life being, well, life—and you find yourself wondering if it's even possible to mend the cracks. I suppose we all hope it is. We really do. says:
So, if you go into the Control Panel, then head over to Sound, and click on that Sounds tab... under the Program Events section, you should see Windows Explorer listed there. Just click on Start navigation right underneath it. Once you do that, the specific sound associated with that event will pop up at the bottom, and you can change it to whatever you want—I guess you could try clicking Test first just to hear it? If you don't really want anything playing, though, you can just set it to None.

So, I went ahead and did that, and finally, that annoying sound stopped... for a bit. But then, well, it’s like it just waits for me. Every single time I reboot my computer, that same irritating noise comes right back, and I have to go through the whole process again just to shut it off. It's such a hassle, honestly. 😕

Go ahead and swap out those sounds, then just save them down as a brand-new preset.

Either just kill off all those Windows sounds entirely if they're getting on your nerves like they do mine, or just go into the Windows sound schemes and disable them once and for all. Simple as that. 👍

..this piece of junk system is trying to push a patch for the exact same hole—somewhere between 41 and 533 MB—even though I’ve been patching it religiously since day one... if I actually hit "install," is it gonna eat up half a gig of data—basically half my monthly data cap—or is it finally gonna acknowledge the year plus of constant patching I've done...😕

..so what's the move? skip the install, wipe this trash, or just jump ship to Linux Mint?😕

A week isn't trash😁
just run both, Windows and Mint, at the same time😉

I think Windows 7 is a great OS. If you really think it's garbage, you might as well just jump over to Linux. 👍
And if you think there aren't any updates or patches over there, you're mistaken. 🙂

If you think there aren't any updates or patches available—you're dead wrong. 🙂

..first rule of Linux: just turn off the update option because they're trivial anyway, and the system won't ever crash on you like this colorful piece of crap screaming at you from Windows... mostly used as a server to install endless programs...

but why the hell are you guys acting like toddlers and sucking up to Bill Gates? Seriously, screw all of you...

I’ve got several systems running on a few different computers, including the one I actually asked about—the one where instead of giving me a straight answer, you morons just keep dragging out this pointless Linux vs. Windows debate. Just answer the damn question. Regarding Windows 7: if it works, it works. If it doesn't, I'll install Linux Mint, or I'll just move to Mac; so don't give me any of this Mac vs. Windows bullshit...

...I want an answer, and I want it about Windows 7... the question is right there in front of you.

@quietcanyon2/">@@quietcanyon2 - just to be specific - it only pulled down about 65 MB for the Service Packs for me.
Anyway, just run the update, and it'll tell you how much data it thinks it needs to download. If that seems like too much, you can always just hit "
Cancel"
😬 And there's no need to get all worked up. If you aren't a fan of the colorful crap, just use something else; I guess you have plenty of options.

..Just fed up with Windows.,..yeah, that pretty much sums it up..

Big thanks for the reply,

..nothing personal about my last post...just a little rhetorical flair aimed mostly at those aggressive corporations and that bastard Bill Gates—who, if you ask me, doesn't deserve half the credit he gets!..

Go to Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, and hit Change system sounds. Under Program Events, head over to Windows Explorer, Complete Navigation; you'll probably run into a Windows Critical Stop under Sounds for that specific path. Just select (None) from the drop-down menu, click Apply, and hit OK.

Let me know if that irritation finally cleared up. 😉
