It’s actually great... I think I mentioned this before... I was a bridesmaid at a wedding there recently... everything was covered for $70 a head—about $65 per person.

Does anyone have any good restaurant recommendations for catering?

It’s all a scam. I remember when they were shooting this whole thing—they were supposedly photographing some prince from Saudi Arabia at some fancy hacienda in Spain or whatever. Just pure smoke and mirrors...
And then, just a few days before, we found out the guy was a total fraud a married couple was actually dealing with. They had already paid him a deposit to shoot that obnoxious prince on short notice after being offered the gig. We only heard about it from a guy who plays in the band at their parties... because the couple called him to ask for help finding a photographer since the original guy screwed them over at the last second... as if he was actually going to find them a decent replacement after they'd already handed him a massive deposit...

:

Yeah, true. A friend of mine went through this; he’s losing his mind over it. He reached out to the guys in the band to see if they could recommend someone, even though he’d paid the deposit a full year in advance. It really makes you wonder what the hell a deposit is actually for if not to secure a pro.

To make matters worse, this so-called "photographer" suggested he could come by a week before (or after, I can't quite recall) to do a little preliminary shoot.😂
Completely unprofessional.

I’ve been reading through this thread and I honestly don't get it—why is this guy so highly regarded?

The food is top-tier, and the servers are total pros—they're practically invisible, yet always right there when you need them.

I’m glad someone else is calling this out...

It isn't just unprofessional; it's moronic and downright rude...

Clearly, with Jack, the deposit is just there so he can wipe his ass with the money he took... or maybe let his kid play with it...

The guy is famous for no reason at all...

When I picked up my wife, he started taking photos of her at home, even though he hadn't snapped a single shot before then. It was all just a rushed, frantic mess, yet prior to that, he was basically non-existent. As a result, my wife and her maid of honor don't have a single photo together. Even my brother, who's barely literate, doesn't have a single decent photo. I mean, what are we even doing here? He puts a photo in my album where a sex shop is in the background in full focus—I don't want that in my album.

And when we finally told him we weren't happy, he just insulted us like total assholes.

I’m not trying to turn this into a pitch—though most of you probably already know what I do—but I handle legal escort services for high-stakes events, and the whole concept of a "capata" has always been a bit of a mystery to me...

When a couple puts down a deposit, it’s really just a guarantee for the service provider that they’ll actually show up on the big day... then the couple changes their mind, and suddenly the vendor walks away with an extra $300 in their pocket. Just how it goes...
So, when a "service provider" changes their mind, what’s the deal—just an old case file? Honestly, if they want to be serious about these agreements, they should be handing newlyweds, say, $250 upfront just to guarantee everyone shows up to collect their money...
I know it’s practically hardwired into our mentality—and honestly, we’re the ones to blame here. It isn't just about hiring a bad contractor... it's everything. Whether it's some guy fixing a sink or someone redesigning an entire apartment, we tend to treat these "masters" like they're infallible messengers from God. We circle around them, nodding along to every word, giving them total control over every decision, every cent... it's exhausting to watch.
Instead of being the one calling the shots because he holds the purse strings, he ends up looking like a total pushover to the guy actually doing the work...

We churned out about a hundred servings of mashed potatoes—and I probably had to deal with someone asking for capers four or five times because the newlyweds kept insisting on them. It’s easier that way... keeps them calm once they finally get it out of their system. Makes sense, I guess.
Out of those hundred or so, I only had one postponement where I actually thought, "Yeah, why not?"—though I don't really see it that way. I didn't have any calls scheduled for that day, so it’s not like I turned anyone down just to go out...
In my experience—if there’s no mutual trust and a bit of actual humanity baked into the deal—it doesn't matter what you do... you aren't going to find any success.
In about 90% of cases, those deposits are just being grabbed by people trying to fake a reputation—trying to act like they’re big-shot photographers, musicians, or whatever... or it’s that classic setup:
Are you free then, and then too?
Ugh, I need to check when I get home—I know I have a ton of mashed potatoes stashed somewhere, but my head is all over the place...
And there are two more birthdays coming up next year—honestly, I'd be happy if someone actually remembered to call...🙂🙂

My recommendations for Chunky, even if he isn't quite my style... he seems like a decent, straightforward, and clearly approachable singer... I've had the chance to chat with him personally, and he left me with a positive impression... and as far as I can tell, they aren't too pricey and they do a solid job with the sets....

Maybe it's too early in the morning for me, because I'm having a hard time following this post by Johnson.

If a client pays a deposit and then backs out, the contractor keeps it. If the contractor pulls the plug, they have to pay back double. That’s just how the law works here.

That’s why when we were planning our wedding, we didn't hesitate to put down deposits with everyone we signed contracts with. 😁
Unfortunately, basic decency seems to be a dying breed these days. I'd rather play it safe, especially when we're talking about thousands of dollars. 🤷

I'm with you there, Daniel Smith8.

And Jack Murphy7, if you say you play music at weddings, then I'm struggling to understand how you even define the term "retainer."

One more thing—that last sentence of yours, if I may be blunt, sounds a bit off. If you were actually loaded, you wouldn't be hanging out on a forum trying to advertise and hawk your services.

Look, obviously I’m not claiming to be an expert—there’s always someone doing a better job and someone doing a worse one. My point was more about the lack of substance in what they're selling and the overall attitude toward the work.
As for that double deposit thing, I don't know... what's the actual benefit if someone flakes at the last minute and you're left scrambling for a replacement anyway?

Honestly, deposits don't make any sense, especially when you aren't getting a legitimate receipt or an invoice... a contract or something. If it isn't through a legal entity, there's basically zero benefit for the client... because it's all just under the table.

Ivica Matić is clearly the type of guy who'll jump ship to another place for $33 a few extra bucks... if he were actually a professional, that wouldn't even cross his mind... it's pathetic...
We're dealing with some low-rent behavior over ten mediocre photos $33... there isn't much left to say. I'll make sure to trash him wherever I get the chance.

Sure, there isn't much gain then. But if someone's going to screw me over, I'd rather they pay $100 or more for the trouble than just walk away without any consequences at all.😉

wanderingbadger17, I feel so bad that you had such a terrible experience with your photographer. I just had my wedding recently, and the photos were one of the most important things to me—after all, they're what last forever. It’s honestly awful that she didn't get a shot of you with your best man or that moment in church you mentioned... For a professional, that's a huge fail.

I’ve been reading through this thread and I honestly don't get it—why is this guy so highly regarded?

When I was planning my wedding, everyone was shouting nothing but Matić's name while I was hunting for a photographer. I eventually dug through his portfolio (back when his website and Facebook group were still active) and realized his style just wasn't for me, even if he had some really great ideas. I prefer clean lines and natural colors, not photos where the midday sky looks deep purple with gold sparkles...

So I kept looking. I called photographers all over the US to see if they were free for my date (which was exactly a year out). Most weren't available, but almost all of them—without me even asking—recommended Matić. It didn't matter if I called someone in Florida, Washington, D.C., or Indianapolis... I figured it must be obvious the guy does good work if all his competitors talk him up like that. Plus, there were tons of posts here about how he's the best (but also the priciest) choice in California.

But just like how wanderingbadger17 was let down by such a famous photographer, I was left speechless when a super popular makeup artist I'd booked a year in advance canceled on me at the very last minute right before the wedding. Gross.

Everything about this whole process sounds absolutely wonderful, but I have to admit, I’m still completely in the dark about who is going to handle my makeup. With my big day coming up in less than five months, I’m starting to feel the pressure! So, I am reaching out for some serious HELP!
I am on the hunt for a makeup artist—and please, I don't just mean someone good, I mean someone truly exceptional. Ideally, I’d love to find someone based in the San Francisco-Oakland area, and while it would be perfect if they offered mobile services to come to me, I suppose I can be flexible on that part.

I really hope you guys didn't catch whatever bug Matić had about a month ago down in those basement studios! I told them back then they were going to end up with some absolutely killer shots...

Neno sent me some shots from his studio, and I’m honestly thrilled with how they turned out! My only gripe is the layout in the albums... I can't wrap my head around why he doesn't let the newlyweds decide which photos actually make the cut.

Canceling that wedding shoot was such an unprofessional move on his part. I truly feel for those couples who likely booked him over a year in advance! That said, I’m hopeful he managed to find them a worthy replacement... but still, it just feels so unprofessional.

Photoshop is honestly such a lifesaver! I love using it to touch up a few stray hairs, smooth out some wrinkles, or even just tweak my height a little bit. It makes everything look so polished!

wanderingbadger17 I really hope everything else worked out perfectly for you! As for what those pictures will be worth... well, you'll just have to wait a year to see that magic happen!

Once those photos finally arrived, we had to pick a place to host them... and honestly, there was only one right choice! I can't quite make sense of that link! It looks like it might be broken or just lead to a dead end. I had a similar issue last week when I was trying to find a recipe on a food blog, and it's always such a letdown!

We aren't that couple... so why are you hoping? 😁

Canceling a reception at the very last second is about as reliable as a harvest of wild plums in the middle of nowhere...

The only way to fix this would be to hire a photographer at my own expense, which seems to be the only way to get things done...

P.S. Photoshop isn't the issue; the issue is when it's used on trivial, useless things instead of the important stuff... and that's exactly what Ivica Matić does with half of our photos... 😠 🙂

Hey everyone! I’ve been noticing so much incredibly helpful info floating around this group lately, so I figured it was high time I jumped in and asked a few questions of my own... has anyone here ever actually attended a catered party at the Hilton in San Antonio, Texas? We’ve stayed there before and absolutely loved it, but we’re looking closely at their event options now because the brochures make it look quite promising—apparently, they can host a poolside gathering for up to 50 guests right by the water. I’m dying to know if anyone has firsthand experience with one of those events! Specifically, what was the food quality like, what kind of pricing should we be budgeting for, and what does the menu typically look like? Is it usually a buffet-style setup, or do you sit down and coordinate everything directly with the hotel staff? Please, please share anything and everything you can! Thanks a million!

My wife and I were there about ten years ago. In our experience, the food was pretty terrible and felt very cheap.

If you're planning on snagging a studio session, you'd better move fast. I tried to book for October 20th, 2012, and they were already fully booked by mid-December. I'm heading in to work out a deal with Studio Val-Mario Paparello... does anyone happen to have any intel on them?

..but I have to wonder, what did the actual menu look like? How was the service? Was it a case of small portions versus high quality, or just both lacking? And where did the reception even take place—was it held in a proper restaurant or out by the pool?
