Hey there!
Back when I was a kid, I did karate for about six years—mostly focused on sparring, though I dipped into kata too. I ended up quitting out of nowhere, and honestly, I've regretted it so many times. Now, I’m looking to get back into some kind of martial art (doesn't have to be karate specifically, just something similar) just for fun and fitness. I'm hunting for a gym in the heart of the US—ideally somewhere downtown—that takes adults and won't leave me feeling like the only girl in the room. Also, it's pretty important to me that the monthly fee stays under $100.
Thanks!

crimsonmarlin14 said:That isn't quite right. I train at an Aikikai club that has a very reasonable monthly fee (lower than what you mentioned), and it’s a solid gym. I’m fairly certain there are other clubs out there where the monthly dues are less than $40, so I’d suggest doing a little more research.
Best,

If you’re training that often, then why haven't you actually listed the price? — Just being blunt here.

Hey everyone. 🙏 I'm looking for someone in the Midwest who teaches Kung Fu. I’ve asked this before, but I never get a straight answer. I’ve scoured the web and all I find are old forum threads from 2005. If anyone actually knows something, let me know. I'd appreciate it.👍

I can't believe I'm reading this... I also did karate as a kid (around 10 years old), quit, and now I'm looking to start again. Just something recreational to blow off steam after finishing college....
I'm also hunting for a club... I checked out Subos (which I saw dragonfly suggested), but from what I could tell, they don't actually do karate... or am I wrong?!?

I've been searching online for clubs in the city... and you know what's funny? None of them list their prices :P

So, if anyone could recommend a good spot and maybe mention how much it costs per month, I’d really appreciate it...

Thanks in advance

I’m living in the Chicago area and lately I’ve been getting really into the idea of MMA—nothing crazy, just for fun and fitness. 🙂 In the past, I used to do some Muay Thai and classic boxing, though again, it was all pretty much just recreational stuff. I know there’s an MMA group over at Gold's Gym, so I was wondering if anyone here has actually rolled with them? I’m curious about what the sessions are really like—you know, in terms of the technical side of things, how much they push your cardio, and all that good stuff—and what your overall take is on the program? 🙂

If you're a student, checking out Kempo over at SUBOS with Dinko Batur is an excellent move😉, who holds several black belts (Shorinji Kempo, which is very similar to karate, Kenjutsu, Wado-Ryu karate, and Ju-Jutsu). On top of that, attending would count toward your physical education credits so you'd get the signature, and it's generally cheaper than training at other private clubs...

Thanks... 😉
How much does it run? And any idea if I can jump in starting the first of the month... or does this only happen at the start of the academic year? 🙂

🤷
I haven't been back there in a while, so I can't be certain, but it’s definitely one of the more affordable options. Honestly, just come by, check out the vibe for yourself, and have a chat with Mike—he’s easily the most knowledgeable guy there when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu...

Thanks again... 😉 I think I'll just swing by during training time and see how it goes.😁

I’m planning on heading out this Saturday. The website says classes kick off on January 10th, so I’m gonna swing by to see if there's any room left and if it's even possible to jump in late.

I’ve still got my old kimono—white and kind of thin—but I guess it’ll do until I can grab something a bit more heavy-duty. From what I’ve gathered, there’s a ton of leverage and throwing involved.

See you guys there! 😉

Same here. 😉 👍 I was thinking the same thing about heading over on the 10th to check things out.🙂

As for the kimono... ugh, mine is probably way too small. It's been about 8 years since I last wore it. 😛 😁

It’s honestly so great seeing people getting back into training... I’m trying my best too, but I seriously doubt I’ll ever be as flexible as a board again after six years of TOTAL inactivity... My leg tendons have been absolutely killing me for weeks now. It’s not even about hitting a split anymore; I can barely even touch my toes, let alone do anything fancy... Plus, the muscle soreness is hitting me in spots I didn't even know I had. I'm gonna die... 😬

If you don't want the gi to be an issue, the most affordable karate gi I could find on sale—while supplies last—for heights between 5'7" and 6'7", is this one right here for $40... They mostly just carry the pants... The only thing is, it’s not 100% cotton. Some people say that's actually better because it lasts longer, but who knows...

Then there's this one, a standard, lightweight karate gi made of 100% cotton...

Now, if your style involves throws and grappling, you'll want this one—it's more than twice as thick...

You might be able to find something cheaper through the big major dojos, though I highly doubt it...

Anyway, enjoy your training sessions... Just NEVER stop completely. Always stay active with something—morning stretches, anything at all. Just don't end up like me, waking up one morning and realizing you're as stiff as a doorframe... 😬

ooo... thanks... we could definitely use it 👍
but first we've got to get moving with training 😁
hoping persistence wins out, and that you can manage to get back into things, even if it's just some light activity 😉

Oh, easy for you to say! I’ve jumped back into training, just doing it recreationally three times a week, so yeah, my whole body is feeling it right now... 😬

That’s actually why I was looking around for some decent kimonos at a good price point... 😉

As for my training progress and how flexible I am? You'll have to ask me about that once a year or so... 😍

Does anyone actually care about traveling to China to train in Shaolin kung fu? It’s easily one of the most badass skill sets out there.🙏

Hello everyone,

Could someone please let me know where I can purchase Judo knee pads or something similar here in New York City? Thanks, and all the best in the New Year! 🙂

If you need knee pads, any martial arts shop will have them: Pride (on Maksimirska), Kwon, PFS, Combatsport... just use Google 🙂
