Roger Gonzalez said:All you need is the drive and a little bit of time. Just show up to training and do what you're told. That’s really it.

You don't even need fancy gear. I practiced Wing Tsun back in Italy and all I ever needed were some gloves and a groin guard.🙂 No gi or anything like that.

There’s a Wing Chun school over in Rijeka—you should probably look into it. If you're digging around online, try searching for both the Wong Shun Ming style and what might be the Lok Yiu method. It's worth checking if they lean more toward one or the other to see if it actually fits what you're looking for.

From what I can gather—and I’m just speaking from my own experience here—you’re definitely going to have to cut through the Lincoln Tunnel. 🙂

So, here’s my situation: I’m 15 years old and looking to start training some kind of sport around the Los Angeles area, but I honestly can't make up my mind 🤷 ... I really want something that will build up my stamina and actually help me put on some muscle 😁 (for context, I’m pretty tall at about 6'2" and currently weigh a skinny 121 lbs 😢)
Thanks

Any combat sport should help with your conditioning and add some muscle mass. Later on, you can mix that with weight training at a gym and probably hit around 165-175 lbs. Maybe pick out two or three local gyms with different styles, check out their sessions, and see what feels right.

Hello everyone... I was wondering, does Damir Kukulj run his own training academy over in Chicago?

Can someone help me ID this martial art?

It went down last night at a club in downtown Chicago. This guy—looked totally unassuming, just an average Joe—gets into it with this massive, gorilla-looking bouncer.

The bouncer lunges at him, throws a swing, and the guy just blocks it with his hand before unloading this insane barrage of punches right into the bouncer's face. And when I say insane, I mean it: his hands were literally a blur from how fast he was moving. As the bouncer staggered back, the guy caught him with a front kick to the hip or pelvis (maybe he was aiming for the groin). Once the bouncer hit the ground, the guy leaned over him and just unleashed another volley of strikes to his face. I’ve seriously never seen anything like it. Anyone know what style that might be?

Based on the hand speed, it sounds like Wing Chun.
Or maybe just a phenomenally fast boxer.

Not a boxer. I’ve trained in kickboxing, and there wasn't a single hook, uppercut, or rear straight in sight. Every strike looked like some kind of short jab (at least, as much as I could tell at that speed). If he is a boxer, then he’s easily the fastest one I’ve ever seen, even watching pros on TV.

Plus, his stance was all wrong for boxing. He kept his head high and his back dead straight, like he'd swallowed a broomstick.

Yeah, looks like Wing Chun based on the clips Google threw my way. Pretty intense stuff. You think there's any schools for that in NYC?

The bouncer just stayed down while the guy made a smart move and dipped right when two of the victim's buddies showed up. He got lucky the whole thing went down near the restrooms while the bouncers were all hung out by the bar. Then again, if the guy actually knows what he's doing, maybe the bouncers just got lucky.

They picked him up and hauled him off somewhere deep inside the club, I'm guessing. Broken nose, split lip—looks like his temple might have cracked too, but it’s hard to tell when the guy's face is basically a bloody mask.

It looked brutal. Way more explosive and, I don't know, violent than your typical bar fight where someone just catches a punch to the head or gets stepped on by some boots.

That sounds amazing!! Thanks for letting us know. You really are a good person. I’m going to head out around town tomorrow to check things out; I’m genuinely interested in learning this skill. I'll start training so I can eventually work the lines. Thank you. 👍

It’s frustrating. He can’t seem to get past those guys using his Kyokushin style. He manages to settle things with one occasionally, but that’s about it. He keeps at it every weekend, though.😁

It isn't meant maliciously; it's just a bit of wit.😁

I’ve been wanting to get into combat sports for quite some time now, and the two styles mentioned in the title would be at the very top of my list. I’m currently over by Maksimir, near Hondlov Street, so I’m looking for a club in the vicinity that offers these disciplines. Ideally, I want somewhere with high-quality training that isn't a massive trek from here.

So far, I was checking the Profightstore directory and noticed the closest Muay Thai club seems to be Barun Trenk, but I can't find any website or info online that's newer than three years old. Is that place even still active?

From what I can gather, UFK Ban is highly regarded, but unfortunately, it's a bit out of my way—though I suppose I could make the trip if there’s nothing decent in my immediate neighborhood.

Look, I realize the best move is to just show up at every gym, jump into a session, and judge the vibe for myself. But honestly, between college and everything else, I'm constantly under the gun with my schedule. I really don't want to waste precious time commuting to places that aren't actually any good.

Picking the right spot to train might be the single most important decision you make when starting out.
Even if you're feeling pressed for time, try to carve out a moment to go check out at least two different gyms.
Everyone says the local YMCA is a solid club.
As for Gold's Gym, I honestly can't say.
