Benjamin Cox61 said:Hey there! I could use some advice!
I'm looking into self-defense classes, and honestly, I'm interested in picking up some kind of martial art too. I've spent a little time digging around online to learn about different styles, but I just ended up drowning in all the info out there, and now I'm totally stuck trying to figure out which one might actually be a good fit for me!
I'm 22, and I haven't really done any serious sports before; I weigh about 123 lbs and I'm 5'6", and I'm definitely not in the best shape right now—which is actually my biggest motivation to finally get moving!
Which martial art should I go for?
Am I too old to start training?
Can anyone recommend a good gym or club in the San Diego area?

Thanks so much! ***

Besides Krav Maga, I'd also suggest Aikido. There are several clubs in the San Diego area. Go check out both and see what you actually like. 🙂
If you need links to specific clubs, just ask here.

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I actually just read a little bit about Krav Maga and Aikido, and they both sound really interesting. Once I get through my exam this Tuesday, I'm planning to head right over and sign up! I found a local club that offers both styles, so I'll just try them out and see which one feels like a better fit for me. 😉

Hey Benjamin Cox61. You looking for some Krav Maga down in Atlantic City? link You can actually train Aikido there too, and the best part is that one single membership covers both disciplines. Cheers.

You can also get into Kendo, Jiu-Jitsu, kettlebell training, and all sorts of other stuff. Of course, one membership covers everything, just like

boldeagle3 said:Does anyone know where I can find some Tai Chi groups around the West Side or maybe near the downtown area by the university campus?

I did happen to stumble upon an ANAN DO location over on V. Holjevac—though if I’m being honest, when I say "recreational," I mean something I can commit to year-round... not just a seasonal thing like signing up for a quick language course or a summer workshop.
Any help? 🤷

The website hasn't been updated in quite some time and contains inaccurate information regarding the training schedule.
I suggest contacting the master, Jasminko Miklec; you can find his number listed on the site.
Otherwise, the training quality is exceptional. For anyone genuinely interested in Taijiquan, I highly recommend reaching out to Jasminko. He is the right person for this. 👍

Brian Baker32 said:I'm really getting into Tai Chi and Qi Gong lately. So, who’s actually the best instructor for this kind of stuff in the States? Also, what’s the consensus on Jasim Miklecu?
thanks😁

He is an excellent master and a fine individual. He is the right choice for Taijiquan and Qi Gong; you certainly won't make a mistake studying with him. He operates under the guidance of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang, who is currently the preeminent figure in Taijiquan globally. He has been granted official permission by the Grandmaster to instruct others. Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang holds seminars here in the States thanks to Jasmin, who is responsible for bringing him to the city. Come by for a training session, and if it suits you, you can stay...👍

I'm actually curious, does anyone know what they're charging for memberships over at that Krav Maga gym in Velesajam?

If you're looking in Pavilion 6, you're $100, but if you head over to Pavilion 25, it's $83. Honestly, can people not use a search engine? Google is your friend, 😉.

Is this some kind of sick joke or are we actually being serious right now? 😵

It's true,

we end up paying for the trainers on credit, but $25,250 is the annual membership fee...

I really shouldn't even dignify this with a response... ☕

Hey, Zachary Mendoza17, you're such a spammer. 🙂

These little breaks you take from the forum aren't doing much for my mental health. 🙂

Is Pavilion 25 hosted by Zafranović?

It's outrageously expensive, honestly—probably the highest price I've ever heard for a martial arts class 👎👎👎
