How to shut down my PC

Hey, I could really use some help here. Every single time I try to shut down my PC normally, the damn thing just immediately restarts itself. It’s driving me nuts. Right now, the only way I can actually get it to turn off is by flipping the switch on the power strip behind the tower. I ran a scan with Norton and it says there aren't any viruses or anything, so I'm totally stumped. Any ideas? Thanks.

I can't recall the exact steps right now, but I think there was an option under power options in the control panel. If that doesn't work, you might want to take a quick look in the BIOS settings.

Just uncheck that box, and hey, if you end up staring at a Blue Screen of Death, make sure you write down the error code!

Good grief, if this is an error code, we’re in for a bad time. I really hope not.

Go into your BIOS and disable Auto Power on, any keyboard or mouse wake-up settings, Wake On LAN, and Wake On Ring.

Yeah, but honestly? It’s totally possible he’s hitting some kind of error right when the system tries to shut down, which just triggers a full-on restart instead.

So when my son gave me the order to shut it down, I went ahead and unchecked that box on the blue screen, and what happened? It just spat out: STOP:c 0000021a (fatal system error). Apparently, the Windows logon process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0x00000000 0x00000000), and then the whole system just shut itself down. I sat there for a few minutes, and once I finally hit the power button on the PC, it actually turned off. But man, things still aren't right. Thanks to everyone for the help so far. Once my son can walk me through how to work in the BIOS, I'll grab him to see what we need to do next.

That specific section right next to "Error: 0x000000XY..." is absolutely the most critical part of the whole thing.

I already typed out everything that was on the screen.

Look, I’m just over here downloading movies and subtitles, catching up on the news, and keeping an eye on any new laws passed in D.C.—you know, just regular stuff—while my son and daughter are constantly messing around with different programs on here. I actually tried playing around with the power schemes to see if I could get the thing to shut itself down after a few minutes, but instead of working, it just threw a 0x0000000a error at me (I did a little digging into that Microsoft support link you sent, by the way), and then, while I was trying to check for any new hardware or software conflicts, it spit out a Memory dump. Physical memory dump complete. This computer basically runs twenty-four-seven since there are four of us using it for everything from movies to scrolling through Facebook... so honestly, who knows if it's just overheating or if my kid installed something sketchy. At least I've got Norton protecting me. Seriously though, you guys are great, but aren't you being a little too technical for the average American?

Look, in my case, it’s not even about being some kind of expert or anything—I just know how to hunt things down on Google, and honestly, anyone can do that if they try! 🙂

So now I'm sitting here wondering about this Write debugging stuff... I've got Small memory dump (64KB) and %SystemRoot%/minidump enabled, right? Microsoft support is trying to walk me through some steps, but my English isn't quite sharp enough to catch all the technical nuances of what they want me to actually do. And then, whenever I try to reboot the thing, it just throws "Physical memory dump complete" at me, and honestly, I have zero clue how those two things even relate to each other.

Ugh, I’m running into this exact same issue too! Any advice on what I should do?

If you’re shutting things down via the physical button on the front—and yes, I’ve seen people do that—you can actually go into the cPanel settings to dictate exactly what happens when that button is pressed. 😁
