My mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer... she had her thyroid removed
two years ago. She underwent radioactive iodine therapy, and honestly, the prognosis seemed almost perfectβat least according to everything the doctors were telling us at the time...
I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me make sense of this
scintigraphy report she just received today:
"Findings:
TYPE OF SCAN: early and delayed static scintigrams of both hands, delayed static scintigram of the head and neck (LL), and a skeletal scintigram.
On both the early and delayed static scintigrams of the hands, there is easily enhanced uptake of activity in the DIP of the 2nd and 3rd fingers of both hands, which appears to be of inflammatory-degenerative etiology.
The delayed static scintigram of the hands also shows a focal area of increased activity in the central part of the left radiocarpal joint, as well as in the PIP joint of the 3rd finger of the left hand and the MCP joint of the 2nd finger of the left hand, which is of degenerative etiology.
In the remaining parts of the skeleton, there is pathological uptake of the radiopharmaceutical in the upper cervical spine, and targeted radiological follow-up is recommended.
Increased activity is also noted in the middle and lower sections of the cervical spine, in both shoulder joints, both elbow joints, and at the L4/L5 junction bilaterally along the edges (facet joint projection), most likely due to degenerative etiology.
Radiopharmaceutical: Tc99m diphosphonate
Activity mCi (MBq):20"______________________________________
If it helps provide any context for interpreting the results above, here are her other tests and findings:
Brain MSCT:
"Densities of the brain parenchyma, both infra- and supratentorial, are normal. Small punctate calcifications are visible bilaterally in the basal ganglia. No focal lesions are differentiated. Ventricular structures are mediopointed and normally shaped. Cisternal spaces at the base and sulci on the cerebral convexity are appropriate for her age. As an incidental finding in the bony space, altered bone structure is seen in the form of degenerative changes in the area of the right half of the anterior arch of the atlas and the right condyle, with more pronounced subchondral pseudocystic rarefactionsβclinical picture?, anamnesis?"
Regarding the EEG, it states, among other things, that the "findings are within normal limits."Mom has been complaining about headaches for quite some time now, which was actually the reason she went in for all these tests. Sheβs 66.
How certain is it that my mother has
cancer? What else could these findings be pointing toward?
Edit: This isn't a lab result, per se. But I saw people posting about similar things here. I started a new thread
