Mind if I jump in... Thanks for clearing that up! I’m not super well-versed in all the references, but I think I get where the criticisms are coming from. I didn't walk away feeling like she was pushing some specific thesis or trying to sneak in an agenda—you know, presenting her vision as some definitive "document of its time" or whatever. I'm with Lisa Davis46 on that one. It might be a bit of a clunky comparison, but the execution reminds me of Phantom Thread—it's about how the story is told. To me, it doesn't really matter what the core inspiration was or what PTA was pulling from; he just used that era and setting to lay out his own layered artistic vision. You've got the painting here, the dresses there 😁, a couple of intense characters on both sides, all this psychological maneuvering, and the whole idea of the artist as a destructive creator. Both films have that same sense of sterility and restraint—that meticulous weaving—and, obviously, they look gorgeous. Maybe I'm totally off base, but hey, that's why I'm here to chat. 😁
Lisa Davis46 said:Honestly, even yesterday wasn't a problem for me. Or maybe I just saw so many high-quality, moving parts that I couldn't objectively process everything so soon. For instance, I remember being so frustrated right after leaving the theater when I saw that movie about the other Adele.
It felt like a middle-aged man's take on a romance between two women, shot almost like a... well, you know...
I totally get it. I have mixed feelings about this one too. That occasionally obvious "male gaze" didn't quite sit right with me either, but on the flip side, I thought it was careful and detailed enough in portraying relationship dynamics and certain character traits that felt genuinely convincing. A friend of mine actually ended a toxic relationship because, after seeing the film, she realized her own situation was basically Adele zamusan from spaghetti 😁
. I saw it a long time ago and only once, so I can't be super specific, but I do remember there was definitely some "life" in that film.
NP teenage Snuff film, finally 🎉... so tomorrow before work, I'll probably drop another little comment!
