Of course they don't need it.
Remember what separates the "great" Americans from the "little" ones? The little ones were actually baptized when they were kids...

I get what you mean. Even looking at the YouTube link, they label it a "one-handed catch," but I’m just pointing out that I don't see anything particularly spectacular about it.
brightpilot6 said:I’ve played with balls like that plenty of times, which is why I know what I'm talking about. If you had ever tried to catch a football thrown fifty yards downfield with both hands, you might actually understand ☕

And if you factor in being at full sprint, having to pivot backward mid-run, getting leveled by a guy weighing two hundred pounds, and then having to manage that total loss of balance by throwing yourself backward—all while trying to snag a spinning object using basically three fingers instead of a full grip, only to ensure you land precisely where you intended—well, that requires a level of athleticism, body control, spatial awareness, and, above all, an intuition for the ball that deserves nothing less than profound respect.

Perhaps this whole sequence is just too complex for you guys over in the amateur leagues; I suppose it's much easier when the quarterback delivers a pass just a few inches behind you.

I’ve been waiting for this moment. 🤣🤣
Matthew Anderson4 said:sounds more like describing something basic in an extra weird way just to make it seem like a huge deal. like, writing a whole dissertation just to say a guy caught an egg 🤣 man, watch out, he fell on his back, damn.

come to a high school scrimmage in Jersey and see real athleticism, body control, and ball skills. that's all I got for you. ☕

I've explained it. ☕

brightpilot6 said:I finally sat down to catch up on last weekend's football highlights.

I mean, just look at Odell Beckham Jr. 🙏🙏

First, you have this warm-up sequence, set to some pretty fitting music:

http://sports.yahoo.com/video/york-g...052926111.html

And then, a mere two minutes later, he pulls this off:

Is it possible that this might be one of the greatest individual plays I've ever witnessed in all of sports? 🙏🙏

🙏

I was watching that and man, the way it synced up with that waltz music in the background was just wild. Like, two minutes after that classy vibe, he goes out and does that! 🙏

It’s physically painful to read this.

P.S. That's a question mark at the end of your first sentence—not a period. ☕

Matthew Anderson4 said:I wouldn't even try to explain what Ronaldinho did, because that kills the magic ☕ if you saw it, you saw it. And honestly, I don't think people will see the beauty in this catch either, because according to some imaginary scale, football isn't even a "beautiful" sport where you can pull off anything spectacular. Which is why they treat this catch like it's some massive, life-changing moment. As if it were "beautiful."

(When I say "beautiful," I mean stuff that’s just pure genius, both how it looks and how it hits you.)

You make a fair point. Some people can find beauty in almost anything, while others only recognize it in specific instances. There is really no sense in trying to walk someone through the elegance of Magnus Carlsen's combinations if they don't already possess the capacity to grasp them.

Beauty is meant to be described and analyzed, after all; surely half of all art and the endless debates surrounding it exist for that very purpose.

I mean, I was basically acting like some stereotypical American patriot over there too.

Anyway, catching Beckham's plays... loving that.

I mean, I could probably dribble from one end of the field to the other with perfect technique and slot the ball home during a practice session too.

It isn't as if anyone is actually claiming that making the save is an impossibility; rather, they are just suggesting that it would be quite a beautiful thing to see.

Fair enough. Gregory Parker's response threw me for a loop—made me think I'd missed something.

Chess is beautiful. Football isn't. I think everyone finds beauty where they want to find it. You can't force it.

You can't really describe the specific beauty of a thing. Beauty is a feeling. You can talk about the feeling itself, or the skill used to create the object, but skill isn't beauty. Beauty lives in the space between me and the thing. Same goes for my dreams. My dream doesn't mean anything to you, just like catching an egg isn't beautiful to me.

Beauty doesn't exist, guys. It’s just chasing some weird fetish you developed when you were a kid. Or maybe you picked it up later. Sometimes it's just whatever the current trend says is hot. Look at how "perfect" models used to look versus how they look now. Just different flavors of the same nonsense.

anyway, what's up

That's a strange claim to make if I know you actually enjoy soccer, but fair enough.

I struggle to see where the massive aesthetic gap—in terms of pure human skill—really lies between Messi weaving through defenders and a running back cutting through a line. At their core, aren't they essentially the same display of talent? One requires dribbling a ball through legs while navigating defenders who have certain rules they have to follow, whereas the other involves clutching a ball in your hands while trying to avoid 250-pound monsters who are legally allowed to flatten you into the turf.

Or consider the difference between one of Iniesta's delicate passes and a quarterback, under heavy pressure from a swarm of giants, launching a ball forty or fifty yards downfield toward a target sprinting at nine meters per second, knowing that being off by even half a yard usually means failure.

It isn't as if we're trying to compare soccer to weightlifting.

Everything. It’s just one of those emoticons where you can project whatever specific meaning you happen to be looking for onto it, isn't it?

Soccer is just more unpredictable.

In soccer, you're fighting against the rhythm and yourself. In football, you're mostly just fighting yourself.

Think of soccer as trying to sing while playing an instrument at the same time. Football is just singing while catching an occasional, off-beat rhythm.

Soccer flows better, but it’s never so smooth that it becomes predictable.

Soccer is the more complete sport.
