Nancy Sanchez31 said:Walter Grant5, could you please explain to everyone what on earth those guys from Mayhem were thinking when they designed their album cover? ☕

Just dropping this here for anyone actually interested. I see Matthew Young35 is already trying to twist my words, implying I’m some kind of obsessed fanboy for killers or whatever. Not even close, man. That's not the point at all. If someone makes great art, you gotta give them their flowers. It’s like watching an elite NFL player—you have to admit he's a beast, even if he isn't the guy you grew up rooting for.

In any case, when you realize that the local pub you frequent has become overrun by idiots—or more specifically, groups of people you personally deem to be idiots—isn't the most sensible move to just find a different bar?

The real smart play is to ditch the whole bar scene and those drunken chats with random bums altogether. Just head home to your wife and actually get some productive yard work done☕

It’s spring now, perfect time for pruning fruit trees or running the trimmer through the bushes, stuff like that.

Walter Grant5 said:sorry, I don't do "nobodies" just because they're nobodies☕

it's about how things evolve over time. that's on the people, not some calculated move during production. depends on how you look at it, but calling this "mass-market catering" doesn't fly with me. a guy like Burzum isn't trying to play to the crowd, and neither are these bands. but hey, even obscure metal had to grab its slice of the pie as everything went mainstream. every art genre eventually gets its own pop category. plus, underground extreme metal isn't automatically high quality just because it wasn't made for the radio. these bands aren't underground, sure, but they aren't selling out either.

whatever. by that logic, John Maus is mainstream, and those guys playing bass in hipster indie bands will look down their noses at you if you tell them you actually dig him.☕

That's what I was getting at, I just phrased it poorly. It's that typical self-proclaimed "true" crowd belief that anything not totally isolated or despised by the mainstream isn't worth a damn. As for the bands that actually shaped the movement? Everyone knows them now, people are interested in them, they listen occasionally, and there are probably movies about them.
So it's hilarious when these people act like "posers" like Dimmu Borgir and their fans are some massive life crisis. Usually, as examples of "real" underground, they immediately bring up Burzum or Darkthrone—the most exposed ones of all, which anyone who spent even an hour looking into the genre knows exist.

Walter Grant5 said:Probably the one you weren't looking for.😁

Yeah, I mean seriousness in terms of being twisted. Like, take Burzum—guy killed his bandmate before going solo and torched some churches. Spent a ton of time behind bars. Or the frontman from Dissection, who got busted for a murder involving a satanic cult partner before ending things with a ritual suicide. Then there’s the guy from Deicide (disturbing stuff, 🙏 really), rocking an upside-down cross branded on his forehead. 🤣

Just to be clear, I’m not out here cheering for any of that shit, but calling these guys posers is a stretch. They aren't like Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir.

Clarification number two: I'm definitely not saying every black or death metal fan is a killer or some kind of lunatic like the examples I gave.

And clarification number three: Don't try to psychoanalyze me based on what I listen to. Extreme metal isn't my main thing, but I can't deny the sheer musical skill some of these guys have. At the end of the day, a good horror movie is one that actually scares you, and a good comedy is one that actually makes you laugh.

Plus, there are plenty of killer bands where the musicians aren't total psychos. It's just that raw, primal energy and that dark, ominous vibe in the tracks. And no, I'm not just talking about technicality or crazy blast beats.

That doesn't mean this music escapes the "seriousness" question, since people will always look at them and think, "What are these guys in face paint even doing?"

Using soccer terms: is Cradle of Filth basically PSG, while Dimmu Borgir is more like Man City? ☕

I'm with you on that. I wasn't trying to bring up Burzum or whatever for a reason. That stuff is common knowledge, and honestly, me mentioning Dimmu Borgir isn't some massive life crisis for me. I actually own one of their albums, and I think this specific one they put out is decent, Jack Diaz4. Their later stuff feels pretty weak compared to their early era, and yeah, they’re definitely posers musically. It doesn't bother me, but let's be real—it's just not believable. Screw it.

Like I said before, just because something’s "underground" doesn't mean it actually rocks. Especially in Black Metal and stuff like that. Just because it's obscure doesn't make it good.

Walter Grant5 said:Look, I’m not saying this is some deep moral crisis. I’m talking strictly about the music as an end product. When certain guys churn out tracks like they do, they aren't just mimicking what they heard somewhere else. And obviously, not everyone worships these people just because they've committed crimes. Case in point: when I first saw that Burzum video, I didn't know any of the backstory. But man, the track gave me chills just because it was damn good. Within the context of what makes music "good," anyway.

Those were just extreme cases. Take Immortal, for instance—they actually get the joke. They aren't some violent morons. Plenty of other famous guys are the same way.

That murder? Pure heat of passion. Nothing ritualistic about it. Just some psycho snapping.

What's your take on Roman Polanski movies or that whole Phil Spector wall of sound thing?

So, why is someone like David Cronenberg considered a "serious" artist while some black metal kid is automatically labeled a joke? Both sides aren't out there actually hurting anyone or trying to change real-world laws—they’re just pushing their ideas through art. It's all just different channels.

👍

There are actually some decent guys in that Black Metal scene who work their asses off just to maintain this fake "evil" persona.
The funniest one has to be Gaahl from Gorgoroth 🤣. I saw this interview on YouTube ages ago where the guy is sitting in the dark sipping red wine, and between sips, he's casually claiming he ate someone... like just toes or whatever. I was dying laughing. Such a try-hard 🤣

Robert Torres, what was that doom song you used to have in your signature? I just got home after getting absolutely wrecked in a fight and it really hit the spot, but my brain was basically mush at the time. 🤣 All I remember is there's a clip of a phone call in the middle where some paranoid guy is talking to himself.🤣

That specific moment where the bassist starts sprinting up the mountain toward the guitarist during the solo? Pure magic. It gets me every single time; I can't help but crack a smile watching it. 🤣

Immortal is incredible. Most black metal fans just pretend to care about Satanism, while Abbath and his crew stay stuck in their own little imaginary world and act like they're too good for everything else.
That guy Ghaal from Gorgoroth is even more pretentious. In the end, it turns out he was just some glorified hall monitor.

Well, I don't either. Most of those fringe acts stay on the sidelines for a reason, just like how mainstream popularity usually lines up with actual quality. We're basically saying the same thing, regardless of what we're arguing about.

Then go listen to some Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen and stare out the window feeling all nostalgic.

Good grief, what kind of headspace do you have to be in to actually find enjoyment in the mindless racket produced by those rapidstag2 wannabes? They’re out there on stages worth millions of dollars, making all that noise 🤣
.
I suppose that whole teenage rebellion phase just went completely off the rails ☕
.
What on earth goes through your mind when you're sitting there listening to that?

If your crew had been listening to this yesterday, it would’ve been a total blowout, a 5:0 kind of situation.

Man, this stuff brings the dead back to life...🙏

Don't even listen to brightpilot6. Following Real Madrid for years has totally fried his ability to judge anything. Damn, it is what it is. Years of that kind of obsession have gotta take a toll somewhere...

you’ve gotta be a total misanthrope or just straight-up a psychopath ☕

to not listen to that—that wouldn't surprise me. But not understanding it? Given how much sense most people make, that actually does surprise me. Like, how can someone sit there watching 22 guys chase a ball around an arena 🤦

and also, what's the deal with how much money gets dumped into some festival stage anyway?

It's like having Leonard Cohen playing on a million-dollar Coachella stage. 🤦

What goes through your head when you're listening to stuff you actually like? 🙂

I mean, that segment at the 5:46 mark basically makes me want to grab a baseball bat, march over to my neighbor's house, and just start smashing through their front door and any other woodwork I can find.
