Look, I generally can't stand pop fans of any kind, but nothing is more annoying than when the "Testo Metal" crowd acts like they're superior because your music is supposedly shallow or lacks depth...
Honestly, Testo Metal is pure poetry for the refined ear of a classic human being. If someone doesn't get it, that's their problem, but I've noticed this group constantly acting like they're on some higher plane of existence—just a bunch of guys screaming, wearing chains, drinking cheap booze, and doing hard drugs. Meanwhile, pop fans have their crowds of people with guns, drinking expensive liquor, and doing hard drugs.

I've listened to plenty of different rockers, metalheads, and similar types—as well as all that bragging that nothing else is worth listening to besides what they like. Or with the older generation, where everything is trash unless it's Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, or Clapton—basically anything they happened to listen to when they were kids.

And honestly, all of that combined is pretty much junk compared to the classics and the massive amount of effort it takes to compose an opera or a symphony...

Almost any kind of music can have something meaningful in it, regardless of the genre; the only things I really can't stand are techno or that mindless commercial pop stuff...

And once again, we have a multi-time undisputed champion in the field of stating the obvious... 🤦

Man, thanks for your profound insights. We're here sharing links in a positive, totally relaxed way, and then an edgelord shows up to open our eyes with conclusions most people reached back in middle school. You're taking this thread down a path it doesn't need to go. Don't do that.

I tried back in high school. I forced myself to listen because of that mysticism they have—something you realize even before you press play. You just feel this sort of heaviness when, after all that buildup, their supposed greatness just keeps droning on (it's similar to Led Zeppelin or reading Dostoevsky). But man, to me, they always felt slow and monotonous, like they were delaying the point for no reason. Their sound just bounced off me. There might be one or two things I'll seek out when I'm in the right mood, but Dark Side of the Moon has always been a total drag for me to sit through. 😢.

But...

This is peak. It's actually very close to what I was looking for when I posted those first links. 👍

They can be slow and repetitive, which absolutely kills the vibe.
For me, though, this might actually be the best live performance by any band ever recorded.

There is definitely too much trash in metal, but the fact remains that there isn't a single good thing to be found in pop.😁
Metal has such a massive catalog (both commercial and underground) that you could easily put together a list of 2,000 top-tier songs. Try doing that with catchy pop hits.☕

Does anyone here actually play an instrument? I feel like people overhype music appreciation and personal taste way too much. Sure, if you aren't deaf, you can listen to someone else's art, but being able to actually perform it is a whole different story. Personally, I have zero musical talent, which I guess has always been a bit of a bummer for me.

Music school background—piano, guitar, opera singing... plus all kinds of folk instruments like bass, tenor, and mandolin.

The whole beauty of music is how it can totally flip your mood. It lifts you up, drags you down, or just gets you hyped...

It’s a total mistake to think a song has to be some insanely complex masterpiece to actually be good. It doesn't.
Real quality is about finding that connection—where the listener actually feels something and those vibes hit home.

So, quit being such harsh critics when judging music, no matter how much "trash" it might sound like at first glance...

It’s nothing special, really. I can tune my guitar strings and maybe hit a few notes, but certainly not enough to put together a decent set on my own.😬

But honestly, I’d love to reach a respectable level with the instrument. I’m trying to stay disciplined and understand the mechanics better whenever time permits. I’ve actually set a personal goal: to master the guitar well enough that I could one day play Dunkelheit as a lullaby for the kids.☕

I agree with most of that, though I’d just add that music serves a therapeutic purpose; it draws out both the heavy, negative emotions and the positive ones alike.

The best part is how it has this power to lift you up when you're feeling low, or conversely, to bring you down and numb you when you're already flying too high.

As for debates over musical taste? That's childish nonsense. It feels like something straight out of high school, just kids scribbling their favorite band names on desks.

Sorry, but you're never going to get the same emotional rush from Bon Jovi that you do from Mozart, no matter what. 😁 It isn't even about how complicated the music is; if that were the case, maybe Joe Biden's compositions would be outperforming The Rolling Stones, but the magic is just different...

I'm not saying they hit the same way—who cares, anyway?
Most people can't even process Mozart because they honestly just don't have the capacity for it. Even jazz is too much for them with all those clashes, shifts, and dissonant tones...

Rachmaninoff, Mokranjac, Chopin... I seriously doubt more than 1% of the population has even heard of them, let alone actually listened to their work.

Back when I was younger singing in a choir, my conductor—guy had perfect pitch, by the way—was always obsessed with Freddie Mercury when it came to pop/rock. On the flip side, his big villain was Zeljko Bebek.
He’d play their songs and then go on these long rants about every single flaw or strength in their vocals. Since he was my hero back then, I just took his word for it.

Now that I've aged a bit and gotten slightly wiser, I've realized things aren't just black and white. He was looking at everything through this narrow professional lens—focusing strictly on technical precision—while completely ignoring how a singer actually connects with an audience... which is pretty wrong and one-sided if you ask me.

Everything is subjective, isn't it? If you happened to lock eyes with your middle school crush while Bon Jovi was playing in the background, but you only ever heard Mozart during tedious music theory classes, your heart is naturally going to race more to those classic American rock notes than to a magical flute solo.

It feels like a bit of a lost cause to argue whether one specific artist, a single work, or an entire movement is objectively superior to another. On the other hand, isn't it incredibly useful, and perhaps even enriching for everyone involved, to discuss why certain things resonate so deeply with one person while leaving another completely cold?

I guess I only care about what's on my own playlist; everything else is just noise.

That's all I've got. Any questions?
