I haven't even touched the overclocking settings yet, I just fired up Orthos while everything was still sitting at stock settings, and under a full load, Everest is reporting these temps:
CPU: 42
1 core: 59
2 cores: 59
Is this actually okay, or should I be seeing lower numbers considering I upgraded to the big type cooler? Just to reiterate, this whole test was done with the CPU running at its standard factory frequency...

Honestly, those seem way too high to me... I usually see temperatures like that when I'm pushing an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 up to 3.2GHz or 3.3GHz using a Hurricane cooler...

The hurricane is spinning at 1300 rpm

Just like my own setup, the standard ones seem stuck at a constant 1300 rpm, whereas the VX actually gives you the ability to adjust things...

Mine’s an X2. Might just be the airflow in my case, I guess.

So, I basically just threw money down the drain. I really thought I could push this thing up to 3 GHz
but clearly, there's a limit I can't hit. When I clocked it at 3 GHz and ran Orthos for about five minutes, the temps jumped straight to 72. All that money spent on a massive Hurricane cooler for nothing, I guess. Not sure what happened though.

I mean, I’m not quite sure if you seated it properly, or maybe the thermal paste just isn't doing its job... honestly, there's also a chance that the fan is sitting a bit too close to the side panel, which could be causing some issues...

It's pretty close to the side, maybe about 3 cm away.

Go ahead and strip it down yourself, then you can see just how massive the difference actually is...

I think those guys over in admin were the ones who set this up

darkwalker54, how does this Kingmax Mars PC6400 memory actually behave?
Have you tried overclocking it yet? What kind of MHz can you squeeze out of it?

Here are my temps running with the Big Typhoon. I'm not really sure why they're hitting these numbers, since everything is just idling at stock settings

Any advice?

That’s just too high...
I'm running my Cooler Master Cosmos at about 77-80°F unclocked, and when I bump it to 3GHz, it hits maybe 86°F...
Keep in mind, this case only has one intake and one exhaust, so there's basically zero airflow hitting the cooler...

I'm honestly not sure what the deal is. I've got another fan tucked behind the case, but it's pressed right up against the Big Typhoon, so maybe it just isn't exhausting properly or something.

Noah Hughes said:I was wondering if anyone here has messed around with the Intel Core 2 Extreme? I’m thinking about attempting some serious overclocking, but I’ve hit a bit of a wall finding decent advice online. All I can find are screenshots of some guy who managed to push his up to 4GHz.
6400+ @ 4 GHz

Now, look—it’s not my intention to push it to those extreme limits just for the sake of it, but I definitely want to see what this thing is actually capable of.

But wait, before I even dive in, I’ve run into a snag... My BIOS shows the multiplier topping out at 16x, yet from everything I’ve read, the Black Edition should be unlocked and capable of going all the way up to 25x.

My current rig:
Intel Core 2 Extreme
OCZ XTC Platinum (2*1GB), 800 MHz
Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3
Fortron BluesStorm II 500w
Albatron 8800GTS 320MB (630/830)

Any advice on how to proceed? 👍

PS: One more thing... when it comes to an overclocked GPU, is it better to crank the fan to 100% to keep temperatures low, or just run the fan at 50% and let the temps sit a bit higher?

Quoting myself here, but for all the skeptics who think there's nothing left to squeeze out of this chip, here is what I've managed so far.

Alright, so I haven't exactly broken any world records, but through some experimentation, I bumped the FCC up to 210 (which seems to be the stability limit) and landed at a speed of 3.35 GHz; the multiplier remains at the stock 16x. I could probably pull even more out of it, but I'm being bottlenecked by the memory—since my motherboard lacks any multiplier settings, I can't really play around with the combination. Temperatures have gone up, though only negligibly! 😉

Yeah, I realize how ridiculous this sounds—I mean, I’ve pushed an old Intel Pentium 4 way past its limits before, often significantly more than this—but we’re talking about messing with an already heavily overclocked CPU here. That's the real headache I'm running into; it's the multiplier...

Yeah, right. The thing comes factory overclocked straight out of the box...

What kind of cooler should I pair with a Core 2 Duo E4500 if I want to spend around $100? I need something reliable enough to push it to 3GHz without any issues.
