You could potentially overclock that E2180 up to 2.2 GHz, which basically gives you an E4500.

Let me reiterate my point here: even if I were to overclock my E2160 up to 2.2GHz to match the specs of an E4500, it still wouldn't actually be an E4500. After all, that model comes with a 1MB cache, doesn't it?

I know. Sorry, I completely botched this thread...
I'm running my E4500 at 2.93 GHz (motherboard maxes out at a 266 FSB).

Hey there.
So, I’m in the market for a new PC, and I've got this itch to try my hand at overclocking.
Since I’ve never actually messed with voltage or clock speeds before, I was wondering if any kind soul out there would be willing to walk me through the process.
Just a heads-up; I’ve spent plenty of time lurking on PC Gamer reading up on all the theory, but for my first time, I’d really appreciate someone to guide me step-by-step—or maybe even just shoot me an email with a solid procedure.
If I can find someone patient enough to help with that... I’ll probably also need some advice on which processor to pull the trigger on. I’m currently torn between an Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 or the E6750.
One more thing: do you think I should invest in a decent aftermarket cooler, or is the stock one going to cut it?

Feel free to reply here or just hit me up via private message.

Thanks in advance, you wonderful people.

By the way: Happy New Year 2008!

Honestly, I don't think most people out there have the patience to sit around and hold your hand through every single little step... Most modern motherboards these days—we're talking about 95% of them—are actually pretty smart and will just automatically reset your CMOS back to the factory defaults if you accidentally mess something up; the board basically goes "wait, what on earth are you doing? and it just snaps everything right back to the original settings.

If you're just looking to do some very light overclocking, the stock cooler should be perfectly fine for your needs, but if you're planning on pushing things a bit harder, you really ought to look into getting a more robust cooling solution (you can find plenty of reviews and suggestions online if you want to browse through some options)...

Everything you really need to wrap your head around regarding overclocking is already laid out in that classic PC Gamer overclocking guide, but if you happen to hit a snag or get stuck somewhere along the way -> just give us a shout and we'll try to help you out! 🙂

How much overclocking can I actually squeeze out of a 2.66 GHz chip using just the stock cooler without touching the voltage?

That is certainly a case for those kids with crystal balls

Not much...😢
That Pentium D runs incredibly hot—so I wouldn’t recommend doing any major experimenting with it if I were you.

I was wondering, how exactly does one go about overclocking an NVIDIA card? Is there such a thing as custom drivers for them, maybe something similar to those Omega drivers you see people using for ATI?

So, how much headroom am I actually looking at if I try to overclock this AMD Athlon 64 3200 (2000 MHz)?
I’ve already managed to push it up to 3500+ (2200 MHz), which felt pretty decent, I guess.
But honestly, does anyone know if I can squeeze out even more performance while sticking with the stock cooler?

this logic applies to your question as well, vividhound19

Guilty as charged! I'm the one with the crystal ball right here.

I managed to push mine up to 3500+ (2200 MHz)
Is there any room to go even higher using just the stock cooler?

Give it a shot and see where it goes, but make sure you keep a close eye on those temperatures.

I've got a question: what's the limit on overclocking an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800, and how do I actually do it?

That is exactly what happens when you rely on crystal ball gazing

Can we get one of those fortune tellers to give slyheron13 an answer? 🙄

I guess they've all been busy working lately, huh?😁

p.s.s. My signature looks much better now.😢

It lasted about a month and a few days... then it just died on him.😠

Now I really need to find something good to use. I was thinking about throwing in some Homer Simpson clips.😁
