Gonna give that some thought... Honestly, I haven't really asked anyone "what do you listen to?" in at least 15 years 😉 Maybe I'll do a little interview run at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, but then again, that's such a niche crowd 😕
I only really notice if something is blasting in the background—like in a car or a shop—but you can't really call that someone's actual taste.

Peace out 😁

I’m pretty sure 95% of people in the US between 15 and 40 wouldn't have a clue who Sigur Rós, The National, or any similar indie band on its way to the mainstream actually is, at least when you look at the numbers...
Those of us running in certain circles have this skewed perception that everyone is listening to these bands, but that’s definitely not a representative sample.

What is actually so terrible about the mainstream?
I honestly don't mind when the music I love is just easy to find—like if I flip on the radio and hear Arcade Fire, or some pop hit, or even Mariah Carey.
It feels weird to me how people assume that listening to bands you’ve never heard of somehow makes them better, or deeper, or smarter than your "average citizen" who listens to Top 40 hits... I have absolutely no issue sharing my love for Sigur Rós with the rest of the planet. WDF?
Besides, the festival is literally called In Music, which implies music that is "in," not some "Checkmate" exotic niche genre.
I would love it if, in our beautiful country, you could walk into any local bar and hear some indie instead of Mio Hrnić. It would be great if all the young people were into that, rather than just clinging to that old pop culture.
Man, wouldn't that be something. Truly.

To be honest, I’d much rather catch Mariah Carey on the radio than Arcade Fire...

Man, taste is such a subjective thing—you can’t really argue with it, so you might as well just enjoy it 🙂

I personally enjoy it when the music I love is easy to find—like, you turn on the radio and hear Arcade Fire, or maybe some pop track or Mariah Carey.
It seems strange to me that people assume they’re somehow superior, or different, or smarter than your average American just because they listen to bands nobody's ever heard of. I don't really have an issue with sharing my love for Sigur Rós, for instance, with the rest of the world. WDF?

Man, how wonderful that would be. Truly.

Exactly that... or even just having those mindless radio stations offer something else during the holidays besides Wham! or other incredibly boring singer-songwriters.
I don't even want to get into commenting on the radio programming throughout the rest of the year.

Mda... I can already see Ros or Fever Ray playing after a Sunday lunch out in the countryside... 😁

I mean, The Killers would be totally fine too... Honestly, I don't even want to hear Sigur Rós or Fever Ray on the radio, just in case that idiot Milivoj Lulek from Antena decides to cover them. Just imagine him humming along to "When I Grow Up"... if that happened, I might actually have to show up there and deal with him myself.

So, what’s the actual distinction between Wham! and The Killers? 🤔 Is it just the assumption that the latter makes "more artistic" music? 🤣

I'm pretty sure it's not Lulek, it's actually the super talented Luka Bulić...🙄

Don't ask me how I know.😁

Kevin Chavez3 said:So, I’ve been thinking about this lately—what is the actual, fundamental difference between Wham! and The Killers? It seems like a simple question on the surface, but when you really dive into the DNA of their music, there's a massive divide in terms of vibe, era, and even how they connect with an audience. On one hand, you have Wham!, who basically defined that bright, infectious, high-energy pop perfection from the early '80s. It’s all about those catchy melodies, the polished production, and that undeniable sense of joy that makes you want to dance around your living room. They were the kings of making you feel good, period. Then you shift gears to The Killers, and you’re stepping into a completely different world. Even though they definitely have those anthemic, stadium-sized hooks, there’s this underlying layer of indie rock grit and a certain kind of cinematic melancholy that just isn't present in Wham!'s catalog. One is pure sunshine; the other is more like a neon-lit night in Las Vegas—it’s got soul, it’s got edge, and it carries a much heavier emotional weight. It’s essentially a choice between the ultimate pop escapism and that driving, guitar-driven indie energy. Truly fascinating stuff! 🤔 Are we really supposed to believe that the other guys are somehow more "artistically significant"? 🤣

That is an excellent point, and I couldn't agree more!
As for Arcade Fire... I honestly feel like this new album is just a bit too "radio-friendly" for my taste. I remember sitting in a coffee shop once while "We Used to Wait" was playing, and it actually took me nearly half the song to even realize it was them! To me, it just feels somewhat "faceless."
That’s exactly why you’ll never hear a post-rock band getting any airtime on our local radio stations. Let's be real: it’s just not the kind of music that appeals to the masses. Imagine if a station like KROQ decided to spin something by Les than if they played an eight-minute monologue from Milivoj Lulek instead! People would be calling in immediately, absolutely losing their minds, asking, "What on earth are you playing now?" 😁

As for Arcade Fire... I don't know, their new album just feels way too "radio-friendly" for my taste. Like, I was sitting at a Starbucks the other day listening to "We Used to Wait," and it honestly took me like half the song to even realize it was them—it's just so bland and lacks that soul they used to have.
That's exactly why you’re never gonna hear a post-rock band played on our local stations. It’s just not that kind of music—it’s not exactly "everyone can enjoy this" territory, I guess. Like, imagine if they actually played something like Mogwai on an American station like KROQ? People would lose their minds immediately. They’d be calling in like, "What on earth are you playing? We'd rather listen to Milivoj Lulek drone on for eight minutes straight." 😁

Man, you’re seriously overdoing it with the beer talk. I swear, I've only heard that band mentioned like twice. 😳

I mean, I think you're totally wrong about the deadline. They wouldn't even bother calling people—honestly, who cares? Maybe they'd switch up the station or whatever. Look, if this was some heavy metal mosh pit kind of thing, then sure, maybe they'd reach out and ask what's up, but since it's just decent post-rock, it would probably fly under the radar. People basically just listen to whatever's playing on the radio and assume that's what's "modern" or trending, so they're pretty much willing to jump on board with anything—even the stuff that's a bit harder to digest, like Mogwai or Peach Pit. 🙂

Yeah, okay, I guess there's a bit of an issue with song length—like, most US radio stations can barely handle anything over four minutes without losing people—but hey, they still have those late-night slots to play with.

Man, I don't know—I really wish I could catch Arcade Fire live again. The word on the street is they might actually make an appearance this time around, which would be huge. Honestly, I’d love to see Belle and Sebastian too, even though I'm already planning to catch them out in New York this April. But man, getting to see both of them within two months? That would pretty much be the dream.

Heh, it’s not like I only listen to it at home; I have the radio playing at work too, so honestly, it doesn't matter where I tune in. And yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head regarding how stations operate—take a major station like Z100 in New York, for instance. During the day, when the ratings are peaking, they stick to music that's catchy enough for everyone to enjoy. But once they switch to their late-night programming? That's when things get interesting and you can actually find some variety. You're probably right about the listener habits, too; people wouldn't necessarily be offended by something like Mogwai, but there's a much higher chance that someone looking for those easy, melodic hits will just flip the channel rather than sit through Arcade Fire.

Anyway! To finally get back on topic. I don't know... if I had to pick, I'd go with Silver Jews, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Sufjan Stevens, or Girls... but as much as I'd love to choose one of them, I'm convinced none of those quite fit what we're discussing here. 😢

Kyle Wilson74 said:Man, you’re definitely hitting the bars a little too hard. I mean, I’ve only actually heard them maybe twice. 😳

And, I suppose you might be mistaken regarding the deadline or whatever. They wouldn't exactly go out and call people; I don't think anyone really cares that much. At most, they might just switch up the station. I mean, sure, if we were talking about some heavy metal thrashing, then maybe they'd reach out and ask what's happening, but a decent post-rock sound would probably fly under the radar quite easily. People tend to perceive whatever is playing on the radio as being "modern" or "trendy," so they seem pretty willing to jump on board with things that are either mainstream or even somewhat less accessible stuff, like Mogwai or Peach Pit, I guess. 🙂

Yeah, okay, there is a bit of an issue with song lengths, since radio stations rarely want to touch anything longer than four minutes, but then again, they have those late-night slots to play with.

I mean, damn, I would honestly love to see Arcade Fire again, and the rumor is that they might actually make the trip this time. I’d also love to catch Belle and Sebastian, even though I’m planning on seeing them in Vienna this April, but seeing them twice in two months would basically be a total dream scenario.

Where? On the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival stream? 😲
Well, in that case, 🙏it’s for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Belle and Sebastian 😍 if only... along with Coldplay, Muse, Foo Fighters, or The Kooks. I could go on all day, but honestly, just one of those bands 🙂

On college radio, post-rock is played almost every single day!
Please, let's try not to be so exclusive...
