Personally, I find their pastries delicious... they're just pretty pricey.
In my case, the cost of the cake was already baked right into the menu price; they told me all I had to do was pick a bakery (either Sugarland or M&M) and select the flavor.

So, I just stumbled upon this thread by total accident! Since I’m getting married soon, I figured I’d pop in to see what everyone’s talking about... and wow, there is a *ton* of debate going on here about where to grab the wedding cake and pastries. Anyway, after a massive marathon of discussions with my fiancé and both our families, we finally settled on getting our treats from Magnolia Bakery. I’m tying the knot this September, and man, I wanted to get the dessert situation sorted ASAP. Seriously, I practically drove through every single suburb of Chicago looking for exactly what I wanted, and in the end, Magnolia Bakery was the winner. Their stuff is incredible. When we went in to finalize everything, they were so sweet—they even let us sample some and gave us extra to take home! They are honestly one of the most affordable options out there at $23/lb. We actually picked up a chocolate cake from them last week for a baby shower, and oh my god, it was divine. So creamy, exactly how I like it

Luckily, the cake is already bundled into our hotel rate, and honestly, it looks incredible... I’m still on the fence about desserts, though. If I just stick to what the hotel provides, we’ve got $30 pounds of sweetness ready to go. From what I’ve been reading, if other places are offering $23, it might not even be worth the headache of hunting down a specialty bakery just to obsess over dessert menus. The funniest part? Half of my mom’s relatives are amateur bakers who usually whip up all the treats for weddings, but apparently, under these new regulations, you need some official certification now. It’s like they won't let a regular person bake from their own kitchen anymore. I just hope we can somehow find a way to wiggle our way into getting that certificate

I mean, I’m pretty sure individuals can hold a certificate, though I assume sole proprietorships can too. Honestly, I have no clue. Just try to figure something out 🤷

I assume you'll need a receipt too... honestly, just get the dessert spread at the venue and let your family and friends whip something up at home. It'll all get eaten anyway, don't sweat it.

Maybe you could just work something out with Sal... like, maybe bring over a couple of pizzas or something, and then someone else can just bake the rest at home?

I tried Meli and I have to say, I was thoroughly disappointed. I was expecting much more sophisticated pastries. A few of them tasted identical despite being different items! I went to Piece of Cake to fix my mood and was absolutely delighted. Does anyone have any other great bakeries to recommend? The only issue with Piece of Cake is they don't really carry dry cookies; most of their stuff is quite creamy...

restlessdrifter15, those little figurines look absolutely killer! 😁
I don't have a better shot right now, but check out the whole cake with all the characters on it
(I'll post some high-res shots once I get the official photos!)
Monica from Ann Arbor made this thing and honestly, she crushed it—it was delicious

And yeah, this is what's left of it after the party 😁

I also found my experience with Meli to be underwhelming.🤷 Everyone spoke it up, yet neither the cakes nor the pastries impressed me. I haven't had the chance to try Piece of Cake since I am never in that part of town, but I have ordered from Sugarland and their cakes and pastries are quite simply the best.👍

Nah, you didn't mess up at all—honestly, I was absolutely loving those cookies and that cake!👍

Hopefully my experience will be just as smooth... though my family gave me a hard time when I got home. They saw she’d just handed me the treats on a plain tray and wrapped the whole thing in plastic wrap instead of using one of those clear heart-shaped containers or even a standard folding box. Honestly, you can't win with the older generation. Then, the lady mentioned that people in my meeting room are now demanding the desserts be served under silver cloches. Like, seriously? Now I have to go out and buy those too? It’s not like the food is going to spoil if it's sitting out for a bit.

Sent you a DM—could you please send over the info for that bakery (address, phone number, etc.)?
