Man, I absolutely love this movie!

It’s just a simple trip through South America, but it’s elevated because it shows the young version of Che Guevara. The birth of a little revolutionary. Big ideas. Honestly, it hits me hard every single time I think about it. It all started from pure empathy for the people of South America. The film is so subtle. Like it says at the start: this isn't a story of massive feats. Exactly. It's a story about how those massive feats are born. And that was just awesome—that atmosphere of an idea taking root in a young kid full of Che Guevara. Uff, beautiful. All of this set against that massive, epic nature. An idea is being born. In the vastness of nature. It's being born. In nature. Boom. This movie is wonderful.

It feels like the movie is actually happening inside Guevara himself. His mind is totally tied to that land, those people, those events. The film is like a coloring book where you paint your own thoughts about Che Guevara. Man, did I put that well. Bravo to me. Clap clap!

Juhu, another movie I'm definitely skipping 😬

I never understood why everyone puts Scorsese on such a pedestal. I saw right through him from day one. 😁😁🙂
Too bad I missed Aviator, otherwise this would just be straight-up spam.

Yeah, look, it’s an anti-globalization movie. It’s basically saying everything is just the same old crap, except back in the day, you had sickos who would give you a free abortion. Fine. At least the movie actually has a point. 😁
Vera Drake in Movies ·
And no, it’s not sick 😁 The woman is a total maniac. She can't tell good from evil. You ask her for an abortion, and she just does it. Whirrr, click, click, click—suddenly you're a new person!

But OH MY GOD, YOU KILLED MY BABY, I'M GOING TO HELL!!! 🙂

You aren't going to hell, darling. Nonsense. There you go! Your tea is ready. See ya! 👋

BWAAAHAAAA 🙂

Typical American 😁

Maybe she’s just a good person.
But I don't buy it. Honestly, maybe she's some cult member straight out of Rosemary's Baby looking for Satan's heir. But I doubt it's that extreme. 🙂 😁

Jose Miller17 said:...Look, I don't even know how to measure this "impact" thing anymore... if my whole take on the movie didn't move you at all, then fine.😁...The physical intimacy should have been the emotional core of the film (which it was, more than they let on 😁 )....
...
My only real issue is her motivation. The idea that she’s just "pure goodness" feels totally fake... that's what really gets to me 🙂 😁

Whatever, man. You aren't going to make me like the movie. I just want to know if I missed something.

Oh yeah!! "Pure goodness." Real deep stuff there. It didn't add anything to her character. She’s performing abortions at sixteen, and somehow he just makes her some saint? If they had given her some past trauma, or maybe a deep-seated resentment toward young women, or something—I don't know. This is shallow. The whole movie felt shallow to me.

Look, everything you're saying is spot on. It’s all about the tea 🤣 Vera and tea. And New York City. Vera, tea, and New York City. Then there's the family. And Reg. Vera, tea, New York City, the family, and Reg. I really wish this movie had been made as a deep dive into New York City society, but honestly? It just feels like a single themed episode from some British TV show. I can't get behind it. It didn't move me. Not even a little bit.

Honestly, Ethel and that guy are actually my favorites 😁 Watching them walk through the park is just funny. And when 'that guy' says this has been his best Christmas ever, it didn't even make me laugh 😕 I just pictured him all alone without the TV (😁) and without anyone else, realizing how much better that actually is. Who knows, maybe I've lost my spark, or maybe I need to start drinking.

They aren't one-dimensional. Maybe they're shallow, but not one-dimensional (don't ask me to explain the difference, I don't know either). But the dad is a good man because he stood by his wife and tried to understand her. Like, he didn't love it, but he knew she didn't mean any harm. He's the deepest character behind Vera. Also, why didn't they go back a bit further in Vera's past? Show us how it happened so we could actually get it? The "what ifs" would have helped...

Just a plot device? What plot? Maybe just a way to build up that heavy atmosphere?

Bad movie for me.😕 And pretty bad, too. Like you guys said, one big issue is that subplot with the wealthy woman. It’s like a useless appendix that just leads nowhere. I get that it's supposed to show how some people get a pass while others don't, but the way it's woven into the story is just garbage. That couple, > and her partner—what was even the point? Mila is so muddled she barely says anything about the actual theme (abortion), and he just acts stupidly and naively good because he supposedly grew up with tons of siblings. Then there's the sister-in-law, just a damn shallow and wasted character. Total waste of time!!

To get straight to the point, they completely missed the mark with the main theme: abortion. You could have had such intense dialogue about it, used it to really break down the characters, but no. For half the movie, > is just skipping around happily performing abortions, and the other half is just mumbling and crying. Empathy level: 0%. Frustration level: 100%.

It was about as bad as > for me. Haven't seen > or the others.

He's great. But I caught his show recently, and he leaned way too hard into the whole "good music" thing. For a guy like him, the music should be everything. He had like 5 musicians on stage with him—I mean, that's just not Mance !!

Still, I'm a huge fan.

Jose Miller17 said:So, can someone who actually "knows" their stuff genuinely like something "bad"?
Can someone who "doesn't know any better" actually appreciate something "good"?

Interesting.
Oh, absolutely. It’s possible. Someone who actually gets it can love a terrible movie just because of the sentiment behind it. We’re really talking about the core of art here. Why do we even care about art? I recently watched that Bruce Willis flick with the kid. I know, I know—it’s a bad movie. But I didn't love it because it was a "movie." I loved what it was trying to say. Even if it missed the mark. Still, I much prefer the good stuff. The great films. They stay with you. They define your whole day, your whole week... forever.

And people who don't know anything? They won't like a good movie. Period. They just don't get what the director was trying to say. Maybe they'll like a hot actress or whatever. Who knows.

Can you even pull stuff like that off? Well... nobody's perfect. And you were getting pretty close.😢

Okay, fine, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit. 😬 Sure, there’s a difference in how people see things, but sometimes folks justify loving garbage movies by claiming "it's subjective." So then I just throw some heavy rhetoric at them to snap them out of that bad taste. 🙂

Actually, you made a good point. There's a difference between a movie being good and a movie being liked. We're basically saying the same thing. 🤔 😁

Nothing personal against the movie, but that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" line? It’s a cheap homage. And it’s wrong. Plain and simple. If you know your stuff, you’ll love it. If you don't, you'll love it too. But absolute truth exists. Relativism is just a joke. Let's not kid ourselves. Please, don't mess with me!

Look, if it really means that much to you... .. . .. Hmm.. Fine.. Alright, I'll ALLOW you to use the submissive beaver icon 😁 Obviously, that comes with the rest of the duties, like having a "🙏" after my handle and stuff, but we can work it out.

And hey, Radiohead—snobs claim that The Bends and that other early stuff is bad, right? Heh.. heh..
