When I hate a movie that everyone else seems to love, I get worried. I don't just lose sleep. I toss and turn! Do I really lack enough life experience to find the references that make watching a meta-narrative actually satisfying? Or have I just lived too shallow a life?

I’m genuinely concerned. Take Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for example. I was pretty much the only one here who didn't dig it. I was spitting mad, trying to philosophize my way through it, but a part of me started doubting myself. Everyone else here seems so sure of themselves, though. They're solid as Black Sten. "This is garbage," they say.

I find it much easier to deal with positive feedback than with negative criticism.

Seriously! 😠
I watched The English Patient and thought it was great. You can definitely do better than that. 😠 😁

P.S. I already retracted that statement. It was inappropriate and totally uncalled for. 😳

dustyscout53 said:Now blueranger12 is claiming people who don't like this movie just don't watch enough films. That’s where they're wrong. A huge part of modern art—not just movies—is about human alienation. But hey, Coppola turned it into a massive hit. Mostly because she only spent 4 million dollars on it, and because it captures that feeling of being totally alienated in some far-off, exotic land.

I take it back. I was generalizing way too much. That was just the moody, emo teenager in me talking.😬

P.S. I just remembered what I was getting at. Most movies work by cranking up everyday stuff and pushing it to the extreme just to keep people watching. That’s standard procedure—literally what they teach you in film school. If a car flips, you don't just dent the fender; you make it explode. If a character is terrified, you don't tell the actor to freeze up; you tell them to scream. If they're angry, you don't have them tapping their fingers; you have them smashing vases. If they're burning with passion, you don't go for a longing look; you have them diving into an embrace.

Well, someone decided to break the rules. See, Sofia 😁 proved that if you make a truly introverted film, it can absolutely blow up over the tiniest move from Murray: he whispers something to her and kisses her. No tongue involved. But the music is cranked to eleven, JUST LIKE HONEY!!! And hey, it's just a kiss. Whatever... 😁

Apply that logic to real life where all those goth, emo, introverted kids finally get their moment, and you've got a full-blown revolution. 😁

Jessica Nguyen85 said:No, seriously though... I want to understand this whole paradigm thing...

The paradigm. Right. I think what they mean is that most movies follow the exact same formula. People get used to it, then this one comes along and does something different. It hits a different part of the brain.

Lost in Translation falls under romances. Fine. You lose a chunk of the audience right there. 😁 But I think it leans on raw emotion way more than your typical romance or any other movie. You have to latch onto how the characters feel, not what happens. If you focus on the plot, you're lost because the characters are just talking about the weather and singing karaoke. There isn't much "action." No massive outbursts of passion, no drama, no new characters popping up, no tears, no sex, no "he loves her, she rejects him, he finds someone else, she realizes she loves him, happy ending" tropes. Nothing tells you explicitly that this is a love story. Most people miss the point entirely.

I mean, people get that it's about love, but it’s all so subtle. Like watered-down soup.

Probably haven't said anything groundbreaking here. 😕 😁 Let me go back and read my old posts.

Was I being too demeaning with that comment above? 😁

Short attention span, huh? 😢 Or maybe just haven't watched enough movies? Look, you just gotta practice...
Henry Anderson47 said:The one thing I forgot to mention was the whole socio-political vibe... angle of the movie:

Watching this, you'd think, "Man, those kids were so sweet and peaceful..." but we know how things actually went down in Cuba and eventually with Che Guevara.

There was that specific moment at Machu Picchu (if I remember right) where they were dreaming about revolution. His friend says something along the lines of, "We'll make signs and hit the streets, let's go block traffic" and young Che responds, eyes glowing red, "No way, brother. This only gets fixed with blood. Only blood, man!!"

Honestly, that was one of the best parts of the film for me. You spend the whole time watching these kind, gentle guys feeling the people's suffering, and you just sense what it's going to turn into. You can feel the anger simmering inside them.

Resentment and hate—honestly, they usually say way more about you than the person you're aiming them at. It’s just frustration, fear, or grief masquerading as anger...

Unless the guy is just a complete moron. But some people are such massive idiots that you can't help but loathe them. TOTAL IDIOT!!!! MAN!!!! JUST AN IDIOT!!!

You guys are out of your minds. I need to keep a much closer eye on you all 😁

Naked people are emotionless.🙄 🙂

Intuition. 😁 I can tell this is just some debate-baiting. 😁

Naked people are just a pile of meat. Dressed people actually have opinions and stances.
Clothing carries the emotion, right? That's what an opinion is.

Enough of that "debate" crap for you? 😁
Loving humanity in Spirituality ·
I don't really know this crowd here, but Karen Sanchez19 was trying to say that opinions are basically just emotions dressed up in the clothes of meaning and objects, or something like that 🤔

But clothing isn't "just" something you wear, man. Clothing creates the emotion. 😎

I get this vague, hippie-style love for people beneath me—people in trouble, lost, confused, just pathetic. They're practically licking my boots, which tickles, so I love them. 😍 Looking back, it’s just... it's so hypocritical. It's pointless. I'm a bad person. My brain is stuck on one pole—that Nietzschean "dominate and crush the weak" vibe—while my heart is on the other. Try to reconcile them? No way. Everything just goes south.

Maybe I went too far. 😁

Look, the lambs are going quiet one by one. He’s out there eating brains and ripping skin—it’s all great and all—but honestly? He’s at his absolute best in those romantic melodramas. 😍

Yeah, yeah. Just generally. 😁

Jessica Wright said:But still, Martin writes songs in the DMs so David really gets into it... hmm...

Exactly. Even Taylor Swift doesn't write her own stuff sometimes, and look how much she complains about it! 😁

It’s a skill you learn. You have to master how to sing like that; it’s not just about "feeling it." I mean, look at those contestants on American Idol. They spend all that time learning how to hold a mic with passion, how to move, how to sing from the soul. And most of them haven't written a single note in their lives, let alone actually lived through anything. 😁

Except for Natalie Portman, I love her. 😳 Plus, I'm a big fan of Yaya too. 😳

restlesseagle15 said:Honestly, that woman doesn't sound like she's having any fun at all while she sings. It’s just heavy and overly serious. To be blunt? Her voice and style are totally uninspired.

Seriously! Digging through those old songs now, and man, her voice just doesn't hit. It lacks any kind of vibe or energy. Honestly, it reminds me of Ripper. Can you imagine them trying to sing holiday carols at home? Hilarious.

banderas said:Man, I always seem to find the one day I'm actually sick to get stuck inside.😢

Same here. But then, feeling fine the next day, I headed down to Cleveland and caught a set at a local spot where they were playing some super smooth vibes.😉

"The meat volume just isn't enough," they sang... (internal thought)

Oh, and in one track (can't recall which one), they sampled a bit of "Armagideon time" by The Clash. It blew my mind. I was happy as a Teletubbies in that moment.

That would be a pretty messed up sight 😁 It would totally ruin the mood. There's that song... what is it called? The one that goes "Sex is much Better When The hooker is crying" 😁 Like that stupid band, "The roof is on fire, the roof, the roof.."

Oh no, I won't even be in Washington, D.C. next week.😵 That's my last chance to actually dare to step foot in that place—that den of grease and sweat.😢 Where am I supposed to find any courage if not from friends who'll push me inside and laugh at the villain?😢 😁
