Importing from China in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
driftingeagle2 said:Yeah... I'm with you there. Sure, the dimensions might look just like a standard shipping container, but a residential unit doesn't have that CSC plate—it's not built for sea freight. You can't just stack it or haul it around as an empty; you’d have to load it onto a flat rack.

Hmm... I'm totally lost here... someone please explain this to me in plain English for the slow kids on the block😬

I mean, how is this even considered oversized when the dimensions are basically identical to your standard shipping container? 🤷

Office containers—you know, the full setup with electrical, insulation, windows, and a restroom.

Honestly, importing standard shipping containers probably isn't worth the headache since I can just source used ones right here in the States and retrofit them myself...

I'm looking at picking up three or four office containers for my business. The Chinese have a massive selection out there, though I haven't actually dug into the pricing yet, but what do you guys think—is it even worth the headache of importing something like this from China? Also, is it actually possible to cut a deal where they don't just head back empty after dropping them off 😬?
What happens to your loans if you pass away? in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
I mean, it’s honestly kind of wild that someone would actually consider checking out just because their Chase account is sitting in the red 🤣
Traffic violation procedures in Criminal and Misdemeanor Law ·
The exact same thing happened to me, except I was down in San Diego dealing with the Coastline and Port Authority's towing service. 😠 Honestly, honey, what you're looking at is just a textbook case of a sophisticated organized racket.
They basically just shrugged their shoulders when I asked to see the police report—you know, the actual legal documentation that gives Spider-Man the right to haul your car away in the first place. No warrant, no violation, no fine.

Since you didn't actually break any laws, the police can't technically penalize you, which is why there’s no official citation, but they'll still force you to cough up the cash for the tow.

I honestly wonder if they'll ever bother moving that $28 annual revenue threshold for registering for Sales Tax. Everything from overhead to basic operating costs has shifted so much lately that keeping the limit this low feels completely disconnected from reality, especially for those of us for whom joining the system just doesn't make any financial sense right now.

When I'm out on a job, I usually just carry a pad of standard invoices (A-643/NCR), though I once made the mistake of buying those specific "R" series ones where you have to manually fill in an extra digit—totally useless, honestly, because they force you to list tax IDs and formal business info that nobody actually needs when you're just dealing with a regular guy off the street.
Since I’ve been operating outside the Sales Tax Law system from day one, I’ve never had anyone even ask me to use those specialized R1 or R2 forms.

She strongly advised against registering for sales tax since I won't actually end up owing anything at the end of the fiscal year—everything should just offset against my business expenses (I don't quite have the technical jargon to explain that properly to you folks). I'm not planning on making any major purchases or stocking inventory anyway, which aligns with what $0.67 mentioned... both the accountant and the forum consensus seem to point in that direction, and things are finally starting to click...

I'll just be using a standard business checking account, and I'll make sure to clearly note on the account details that I'm not registered for sales tax. That should be enough to keep things simple.

@George Phillips

Yeah, I hear you. I dropped the ball there. I should have realized I had the option to decide whether to opt into the sales tax system or not...

I'm still a little lost on the bolded part; from what I understand, if you aren't registered for sales tax, you don't even use those special tax codes on your invoices. You just list it as "Invoice No. X."
You just have to include a note saying you aren't a registered sales tax collector.

Grab your business ledgers right away; you can just keep them digital and have them on hand. If an IRS auditor shows up, you're legally required to cough them up immediately.

Since you’re mostly just freelancing for regular folks, there’s zero reason to deal with the headache of collecting sales tax right out of the gate. Just stick to standard income tax for now, and once you start pulling in serious bank—which, let’s be real, isn't happening overnight with this kind of gig—you can always make the jump to a sales tax registration later.
Regarding that car, since it’s technically in your dad's name, I’m not sure if you can even list it as a business asset, but honestly, it wouldn't matter much since you aren't collecting sales tax anyway; just make sure you track your mileage because those deductions are pure gold.
Keeping the books is actually pretty painless if you stay out of the sales tax system, so if you have a buddy who actually knows his way around an Excel sheet, you could probably DIY it—that’s basically how I handle my own stuff. Just don't get lazy; stay on top of whatever new IRS updates roll out so you don't get blindsided.
Expect your payroll taxes and social security hits to land around $567/month. Don't let those pile up; seriously, it's better to take a smaller paycheck than to end up in the crosshairs of the IRS.
Basically, any expense you rack up to keep the business running counts as a deduction—so we're talking mileage, software subscriptions, gear, office supplies, your cell phone bill, all that jazz. Just remember, you need to make sure every single receipt has your name and Social Security number on it so the accountants can actually use them.

Good luck!
Entrepreneurial struggles for Americans in Economy ·
Nothing brightens my morning quite like starting a new fiscal year only to realize my payroll taxes have jumped by more than $33. Honestly, if this money actually went toward something useful, I wouldn't be so bitter, but instead, I’m just subsidizing a massive army of slackers, fake veterans, their entire extended families, people living off disability claims, and basically every social parasite out there. 😠
Then there’s my bank, which loves to nickel-and-dime me about $15 every single month just for the privilege of having an active checking account—even though my "activity" is literally just paying taxes and the occasional invoice, plus the odd ATM run for business expenses.
Add in the shady Chamber of Commerce and their totally pointless membership fees...
And don't even get me started on the IRS, which somehow manages to flag me for tax debt regarding workers' comp every month, despite the fact that the actual regulations and laws clearly state those payments aren't due until the 15th of the month for the previous quarter. 😵
I had that surgery back when I was just a kid, easily over twenty years ago now. I can't really recall much beyond having to wear a patch over my eyes for a while afterward, and then dealing with some bandages or glasses once I finally got discharged from the hospital. It wasn't actually that big of a deal, though—even at such a young age, I didn't walk away with any lasting trauma from the whole ordeal. Everything turned out great, and I'm doing just fine today.

Wait, what happened with her thyroid? Why did she end up having surgery?
Antidepressants: General Discussion in Health ·
Lara, I’ve been following your story, but I haven't jumped into your threads because, honestly, I didn't have anything particularly brilliant to contribute.

But I had to chime in here. Seriously, please don't start popping that junk. What kind of god is going to bless you with those pathetic little pills? Half the garbage doctors shove at us just to get us out of their office works on nothing more than a placebo effect anyway. Reading through your posts, it's pretty obvious you're a tough one, and I really don't think you need those kinds of mental "adjusters." Give me a break. You'll get through this on your own without relying on candy. Doctors prescribe heavy stuff like Normabel, Leksaurin, or Praksitene mostly out of pure habit... just to get rid of you... offering a little comfort to the weak-willed who lack any real backbone.
I don't see you being one of those types, so just skip it.

I know way too many people who tried to fix their entire lives with a pill and ended up making everything a hell of a lot worse. Don't do it. You don't need to be numbed out; you need total clarity instead.
Time. Time is what actually helps; time heals everything.
Living with PTSD in Health ·
At the end of the day, it’s all about your mindset. I know plenty of people dealing with various forms of PTSD who are out there grinding and trying to move forward. I know this guy—my friend's dad—who basically snatched away our Motorola walkie-talkies while we were just kids playing around the neighborhood and headed off to serve in the US Army... he saw some heavy stuff. What keeps him from spiraling into PTSD? Work. Family. He went over there to protect his people, and now he’s back, working his tail off, building things, providing, making sure their future is solid, whatever. Personally, I’ve dealt with my own version of trauma; certain experiences during the war triggered a serious illness that kept me stuck in hospitals for years... but that’s hardly an excuse to sit around hating the world. If anything, I’m just glad that ugly chapter is closed so I can look ahead, set new goals, and focus on actually living instead of obsessing over injustice, evil, or how broken the system is. Obviously, what soldiers go through is beyond words... I can't speak to that. For me, just seeing a few seconds of footage from a news report showing sniper fire hitting a crowd of fleeing people somewhere in Canada was enough to make me sick of everything and want to lose my mind.
PTSD isn't exclusive to combat; a woman can develop it after a traumatic birth, or a spouse after losing a partner, and so on... we really need to stop using the label as a free pass to live on the edge.
When things get messy, the best way through is to face them head-on. You have to talk about it, honestly and openly. You might not be able to erase or forget certain things, but you can build something better to counter them.
Lombard loans for dummies in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Could use some pointers here—what exactly is a Lombard loan, how does it actually work, and when is it even worth using? Anyone have any real-world experience with them?

Back in the day, my bank tried to pitch me one as a way to help bridge the gap on a mortgage... I'm still trying to wrap my head around how that even makes sense.
Daily water intake: Let's discuss in Health ·
I honestly don't even get thirsty that often 😲 ...or rather, it just rarely hits me. Since I'm a girl, I can pretty much go forever without much fluid; I probably only knock back maybe three glasses a day, mostly getting my hydration through fruit, coffee, or soup... but I’ve realized that’s totally unhealthy, so I’m trying to force myself to drink more water more frequently. At my last physical, my doctor looked at me all surprised and was like, "Your blood is way too thick, you really need to hydrate more."

Meanwhile, my man can't even fall asleep without a massive bottle of water right by his bed, which he basically drains before morning. He's constantly thirsty, too, which drives me absolutely insane when we're out doing something and he starts rushing me because he's "thirsty as a desert traveler." 😬

I think I might be subconsciously dehydrating myself 😬 just because I am beyond irritated by having to get up in the middle of the night to hit the bathroom.
A friend of mine dealt with similar symptoms, and things actually took a turn for the worse once she was pregnant—she’s got rheumatoid arthritis, if I recall correctly... though honestly, don't take my word for it, I'm hardly a doctor.
