I’ve been sitting here for the last hour staring at my screen, just thinking about how we, as a society, have become so incredibly desensitized to the human cost of being the world's "policeman." It feels like every time a new headline rolls in about tension rising in a specific corner of the globe, we all just shrug, check our stock portfolios, or argue about the political optics of it all. We treat these massive, tectonic shifts in global stability like they are just rounds in a video game, or a series of data points on a news ticker.

But the data points aren't just numbers. They are people. They are kids from small towns in the Midwest, kids from suburbs in the South, kids who had plans for college or starting a family, now suddenly caught in the gears of a machine they didn't build and barely understand. I remember back when I was younger, there was a certain gravity to the idea of "service." It felt like a solemn, heavy thing. Now, it feels like a revolving door of "stabilization efforts" and "overseas operations" that seem to have no clear beginning, no clear middle, and absolutely no end in sight.

I find myself wondering about the psychological toll this takes on the collective consciousness. We live in a country that is essentially a fortress, yet we are constantly projecting power into every vacuum of instability we find. We call it "maintaining order," but at what point does "maintaining order" just become a euphemism for an endless cycle of reaction and retaliation? I look at the way we talk about these things on social media—the cynicism, the memes, the quick finger-pointing—and it makes me wonder if we've lost the ability to actually empathize with the individuals who are actually standing on the ground when things go wrong.

There's also this weird disconnect between the people making the decisions in air-conditioned rooms in D.C. and the people actually dealing with the physical consequences of those decisions. It feels like there is a massive, growing gap between our foreign policy goals and the reality of what it costs to pursue them. We talk about "strategic interests" and "containment," but those words don't mean much to a family waiting for a phone call. We’ve created this massive, complex apparatus designed to respond to every flicker of unrest, but we never seem to have a plan for the "after." We are great at the "during," but the "after" is always a messy, expensive, and often tragic afterthought.

What really gets to me is the shifting terminology. We see these new categories popping up in reports all the time—new names for old conflicts, new ways to classify different types of engagement. It feels like a way to sanitize the reality. If you change the name of the operation or the category of the casualty, does it make the loss feel less significant to the public? Does it make it easier for the government to manage the narrative? I suspect it does. It’s a way of smoothing over the jagged edges of reality so it fits more neatly into a briefing.

I'm not saying we shouldn't defend ourselves or our interests, but I am questioning the sheer scale of our involvement in things that feel increasingly disconnected from our actual safety. It feels like we are perpetually stuck in a state of "responding" to things, rather than actually building a world where such responses aren't necessary. We are playing a permanent game of whack-a-mole with global instability, and the cost of playing is being paid in blood by people who are often just following orders from a playbook they didn't write.
