And why exactly is that a bad thing?

Richard Hernandez13 said:Sure, but Hero is basically just a sword fighting movie. There isn't any real martial arts involved.

electricnomad said:I honestly don't get it: what laws of physics are they even following when they fly? I can handle it until they start soaring across the screen; then I just hit stop and restart because it's frankly ridiculous.

In The Matrix, they established that Neo has superpowers and can fly, so fine, no problem there. And Superman could fly simply because he’s Superman, right? 😁

The crowd flies because we're dealing with the wuxia genre here. Look, I don't want to sound like a know-it-all since I'm no expert, but wuxia novels have been a staple of American literary influence from China for at least a century. In these stories, you constantly see characters who are such master martial artists that their incredible balance and jumping ability allow them to essentially "fly." The novels themselves usually revolve around the tension between honor and duty versus personal desire.

It's really just a deep-seated literary tradition for them, something the West is only starting to wrap its head around through movies like Tiger and Dragon. I've seen about half a dozen Hong Kong martial arts films set in these semi-mythical versions of China, and they all follow the pattern of Hero or Tiger and Dragon, even if they're a bit over the top. Unfortunately, none of them even come close to those two in terms of budget, visual beauty, or sheer quality.

As for a different direction in historical martial arts cinema, I have to mention the Korean film Mus, or rather Warrior, which played in our local theaters and came out on DVD. It's an excellent film, but it isn't wuxia; it's more of a straightforward, realistic historical war movie. It stars Zhang Ziyi, who is absolutely stunning. 😍

cosmictrucker132 said:I caught a movie on DIRECTV the other day... the subtitles were an absolute disaster. Half the sentences were cut off or just made zero sense; it was incredible. After a while, I gave up on reading and just tried to follow the plot through the visuals alone 😁 ...this thread actually helped fill in some of the gaps for me...

All things considered, it’s a pretty solid fairy tale. 👍

We were just discussing how this specific film is crafted so well that you can easily watch it without any subtitles at all. In fact, one of these days we’ll just *watch* it without them, since they really just get in the way of the cinematography! 😬 👍

ODYSSEUS: Hey, how’s it going?
ACHILLES: Not much [dodge, parry, stab]. Just showing Patroclus [dodge, parry, dodge] the ropes [stab].
ODYSSEUS: Kid looks sharp. Is he your—
ACHILLES: Cousin. He’s my cousin. My cousin. To wrap it up: Cousin.
ODYSSEUS: Sure, whatever. Listen, you ready to fight for Agamemnon or not?

....

"Menelaus kicks Paris in about thirty seconds.

BLOOD: *spurts*
PARIS: *cries*
MENELAUS: GET BACK HERE SO I CAN FINISH YOU, YOU COWARD!
PARIS: *clings to Hector's feet, sniveling*
MENELAUS: I'LL TAKE YOU DOWN LIKE A DOG!
HECTOR: *HECTOR SMASH!*
MENELAUS: *dies*
PRIAM [from city wall]: Oh boy, this is bad. This is just really bad.
OUR LADY OF SOUNDTRACK SORROW: WAHHHHHOOOOOHHHHH!

.....

Agamemnon's Tent of Suck
ODYSSEUS: So, are you actually going to give Achilles back his lady now?
AGAMEMNON: Honestly, I’d love to, but I already handed her over to the troops.
ODYSSEUS: *facepalm*
NASTY GREEK SOLDIERS: Woohoo! Who gets a turn with the prize first?
BRISEIS: I'M KILLING YOU FIRST!
ACHILLES: And I'm killing you second!

Achilles goes All ninja on The Greeks with a branding Iron and carries Briseis OFF
off.
-brightmoose- said:Not everyone fits that mold. Take Bill Cosby, for instance; he’s easily one of the most laid-back comedians out there. Watching him, you get this distinct impression that the man was born as a fifty-year-old.😬

I used to think Bill Cosby was hilarious when I was a kid. Eventually, The Cosby Show lost its charm as I grew up, but I have to admit, watching some of his old stand-up specials actually caught me off guard in the best way possible.

Oh, boy. I am absolutely counting down the minutes. This movie looks like a total masterpiece.

It's Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Personally, I loved the movie, though not because I was looking for some deep, insightful dystopia. It was more about the fact that Christian Bale had katanas and dual pistols, and then there's that part where he starts shooting in slow motion and everything goes nonsense!!!!!! Plus, that high-energy techno soundtrack? Absolute perfection. That's why the film works for me.

it seems things like that can provide men with endless excitement.

High-end production, lesbian sex scenes, and sports. Precisely.

Ah, the classic fallback: "If they aren't into us, they must be gay." How incredibly original.
Best dumb movie? in Movies ·
Kung Fu Panda is actually quite decent. It’s incredibly stupid, but good. It's the kind of movie I'll pull up on my computer whenever I'm in a particularly foul mood. Five minutes of those ridiculous gags is usually enough to lift my spirits. An added bonus is the subtitles I have:

"Oh - oh. Troubles!"

"Oh - oh. Total nonsense!"

Adam Wright56 said:I get it—at first glance, the animation and production quality look top-tier, but when you stack it up against his other work, it doesn't feel quite as groundbreaking. It’s a solid entry point for newbies who haven't explored much of the genre yet, but there is definitely better stuff waiting for them down the road.

I can vouch for that, since it was actually the first anime I ever watched. I’ve never regretted it once. It's an absolute classic in my book!
On the flip side, Spirited Away is undoubtedly one of his greatest achievements and stands alongside masterpieces like Nausicaä and Totoro.

Saw "Spirited Away" at AMC Theatres. It is totally weird and I absolutely love it. One of my favorite little details (out of many) is that lamp on the post with the little hopping foot at the bottom. ^_^

Edward Nguyen said:this is booooooooooring.

That’s likely because you have a feminine sensibility; this simply isn't your kind of cinema. It is meant to be a gripping epic centered on male camaraderie—think along the lines of Saving Private Ryan, just layered with heavy metal and subpar one-liners.

In Memoriam: Marlon Brando (1924–2004) in Movies ·
Henry Barrett11 said:It’s enough to make you lose it. The absolute biggest icon is gone.

No pun intended, right? 😁

It is a sad moment. Though, I am not entirely certain why we should actually be mourning him. When you step back and look at it, the man had a relatively successful life: he became a major star, served as a sex symbol in his youth, women adored him, and he had money... People certainly gossiped about how much weight he gained toward the end of his life, but honestly, that is just called *aging*, which is perfectly natural.

I suppose I feel bad for Marlon Brando because, in truth, I feel bad for myself. Over time, you begin to view these famous figures as permanent fixtures of the world around you. When you suddenly realize that a piece of that reality is simply gone—poof!—it forces one to contemplate all the other things that will inevitably change and vanish over time.

Anyway, there I go rambling again.

Melissa Moore32 said:wow....this is a movie I probably watched at least a hundred times growing up (to be fair). 😁

I haven't seen it in over a decade... it would actually be nice to revisit it and refresh my memory.

Someone in my house used to have this on VHS. A few years later—back when I was just starting high school—I stumbled upon that tape by total accident, and it was a movie I'd never even heard of. I sat down expecting some hyper-intense, gore-filled action flick, only to find an action comedy instead. And a fun one at that!

Look, it might not reach the heights of smrtonosan oruzj or Die Hard, but then again, what does it really matter? Especially when I think about the absolute garbage they pass off as action movies these days.... 🙄
