I don't really touch beef or chicken, for instance, because the stuff here in Canada is honestly pretty terrible (crazy cows, hormones, antibiotics, and all that junk).

So, you coming over for dinner? Maybe you can finally try these seeds I've been snacking on.😉
Look, lady, I don't just sit around snacking on corn kernels. I actually eat proper, gourmet, high-end meals.
I’m talking artisan sourdough bread, or maybe some authentic rye made with a natural starter instead of that industrial yeast junk. I eat fish, seafood, lamb, potatoes, sweet potatoes, honey, almond butter, sugar-free preserves sweetened with grape juice, rice milk, premium teas sourced from all over the globe, and fresh produce from everywhere—lately, I've been into persimmons and mandarins, mango, pineapple, plantains, rice, hummus, apple cake with honey, sushi, zucchini, eggplant, carrots, almonds, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, coconut, prosciutto, and even sugar-free mayo made with honey and lemon juice, etc.
Every single day my cooking changes—Indian, Mexican, African, Italian, you name it.
Honestly, it's such a struggle for me, since I can't exactly survive on donuts and hot dogs every day... 🙂 🙂 🙂

Heh... I guess modern medicine really is a miracle worker. It might even turn back the clock.😉
One day you're hitting puberty, the next you'll be back in preschool.👋
Rachel Brooks63 said:I’d actually argue the exact opposite of what you're saying.
I think people living with severe conditions like VF_9 are actually proof that modern medicine works.
Fifty years ago, she almost certainly wouldn't have even made it to this age, let alone have a chance at being:
all I can say to that is... well, if you actually knew her in real life, you'd know.🤣
Actually, if we're talking about the success of modern medicine, maybe we should focus more on preventative care instead.
And what does that have to do with her take on alternative medicine?
The point remains: she’s never even tried it, so she's just talking out of turn.🙄
rustymoose54 said:🤣 fine, whatever.
And you're about as exciting as a bout of food poisoning. My dad could probably outdo your 🙂 🙂 🙂
I'm the boring one?
Heh, look who's talking.🙄
Honestly, you show up to every single thread on alternative medicine just to lecture everyone with your "expertise." It’s getting old.😲
Maybe go find a chemistry forum to bore instead. Go bother them.🙂 👋
rustymoose54 said:Have you ever walked up to someone with an amputated limb and asked, "Why don't you try alternative medicine? Maybe your leg or arm will just grow back"?
That’s how your post reads to me. Honestly, it's misplaced and completely irrelevant.
Look, you can't see what I'm missing through a forum, but believe me when I say I'm missing part of an internal organ. I've never seen anyone regrow one, and I doubt I'll be next. 😁 🙂
rustymoose54, I really don't appreciate how you twisted my words into something they weren't. 😠
I never once suggested anyone try alternative medicine. I couldn't care less whether someone chooses to use it or not. 🙄
It seems pretty foolish to me how you persistently—and quite arogantan way, I might add—dismiss alternative medicine. You're also being incredibly dismissive toward people sharing their actual experiences with it, even though they've tried it and you haven't.
It’s like telling someone coconut tastes disgusting when you've never even had a coconut.
On the flip side, you blindly praise conventional medicine, despite the fact that you, like the rest of us, have dealt with its limitations. 👋
You're being arrogant and dogmatic. 😢
Rachel Brooks63 said:Look, someone would actually have to study that turnip. You’d need to pinpoint the exact molecule in the vegetable that prevents pore clogging and comedones from forming. To pull that off, you need a lab, high-end equipment, specialists... basically, massive research funding. Once they figure out what stops the acne, they publish the paper. But you can't patent a turnip. There's no way to monetize it or recoup those R&D costs. So, I guess nobody is going to hand over that kind of cash.
That's just my theory on why "home remedies" never get vetted. 😁 Personally, I'll take herbal teas over pills any day, but this ancient botanical wisdom is just slipping away. Everyone just wants a quick fix—grab a pill so the pain goes away, right?
With all due respect to my fellow chemists 😉 (I can already see rustymoose54 and Rachel Brooks63 gearing up for an attack). 🙂
I'm with them. 🙏
rustymoose54 said:You clearly haven't a clue, despite all your Googling, dear. 😁
I assume you meant fibromyalgia.
CHRONICALLY ILL patients—including those whose conditions stem from autoimmune processes—really should get their flu shots. Their primary condition can take a massive hit if they catch the virus (that same 😉).
An autoimmune disease would be something like lupus, certain kidney diseases, or Type 1 diabetes (which has absolutely zero connection to weight or diet), etc.
There are also chronic patients whose primary diagnosis isn't linked to autoimmune issues, but the recommendation for vaccination still applies to them.
Regarding that "cytokine storm" metaphor... maybe you could start by explaining what cytokines actually are, since you're such an expert in alternative and general immunology. 🙂 😁
Sorry, VF, but I don't see the logic. How can you be so against alternative medicine yet so pro-conventional medicine when conventional medicine hasn't even been able to fully cure you? 😕
Have you ever even tried alternative medicine?
If not, I guess you have less ground to stand on than those of us who have tried both conventional and alternative routes and are speaking from actual EXPERIENCE, whereas you seem to be speaking purely from PREJUDICE (against alternative medicine).
For me, chiropractic work, acupuncture, and a clean diet were what actually helped when conventional medicine failed me.
I don't quite get why you're so skeptical about alternative medicine.
Maybe just some professional bias from being a scientist? 😉
People are more than just a pile of bones and meat, after all.
Have you guys gotten your flu shots yet?

Justin Fox said:Of course I got my flu shot this year. Like every other year. Let the "geniuses" who think they have the best immune systems enjoy the fever and the chills; I'll pass. It’s just a quick poke in the arm. Not painful, no real side effects, really.
Regarding bird flu: getting the standard shot probably wouldn't hurt, though whether it actually helps depends on how much that mutated strain resembles what we're actually vaccinated against.
If everyone just got their shots, the disease would disappear. But then again, there's always someone convinced they're too smart to need a vaccine. 👎
And why should everyone get vaccinated?
I haven't even had the flu in years.😕

Karen Brooks said:Look, we aren't debating philosophy here; I’m talking about physical reality, so that comparison doesn't really hold water. I could just as easily claim some disease is caused by radiation from aliens. That kind of nonsense is useless. If I have to believe in a cause without anyone being able to prove it or explain the actual mechanics, then I might as well believe in a fortune teller. Nowadays, most mental health issues can be explained quite logically without bringing up imaginary energies, so if what you're saying is true, why can't you explain this one?
So, I guess a woman with PCOS has to actually feel this energy to believe it's causing her condition? And how is it that she doesn't feel it when she clearly has the disease? Basically, you can't explain love to someone who hasn't felt it—fine, I get that—but then someone with PCOS should, theoretically, be able to feel this "famous" energy, right? Since, you know, how can you not feel the very thing causing your illness? Ahhh, right, I forgot, you have to reach a higher state of awareness or some other blah, blah, philosophy.
Ugh, I wasted an entire year on a guy who peddled the exact same brand of "wisdom." Luckily, I got out before things got worse.
👋
Okay, that's your experience, but that doesn't mean all "alternative" medicine is just pure gibberish.
Quacks are everywhere, whether they're practicing Western medicine or alternative stuff.
I think the issue might be that things aren't regulated properly in certain places, but here in Canada, they are.
There are schools and universities that are government-certified, so you don't have random amateurs practicing alternative medicine.
I suppose you just have to figure out for yourself who is legitimate and who isn't.
And honestly, actions speak louder than words.

Karen Brooks said:Look, please just give me proof. Real proof. A concrete explanation. And no, I’m not looking for some "...neighbor's grandma..." anecdote... I want a specific, understandable breakdown. Anything else, sorry, I just consider it rambling and have zero reason to believe it.
Karen Brooks, if you don't believe it, nobody can prove it to you.
If you don't believe, then you don't believe. That's fine by me.
It’s the same as an atheist demanding someone prove God exists (just noting this as an example; we aren't actually debating religion here).
Or someone who has never felt love demanding someone PROVE that love exists.
There isn't much to prove; you either experience it, or you don't.

Amanda Lee42 said:Can someone DM me some info on that chiropractor? I might try to talk my husband into going. He’s been dealing with this for years, but he’s terrified a chiropractor is just going to mess him up. Besides the hernia, he gets this constant pain near his shoulder blade—sometimes it’s intense, sometimes not, but during heavy physical work, it can actually paralyze him for a second.🙄
I'll drop a link here, though I'm not sure if there are any chiropractors in the US who actually use Network Spinal Analysis:
Network Spinal Analysis
I started seeing this specific chiropractor myself, and honestly, I'm pretty happy with it.
Last time, I went straight from work—totally exhausted and stiff, everything was aching, especially my back. After maybe 20 or 30 minutes of treatment, I felt like a new person.👍
I live in Vancouver, Canada.
Has anyone else dealt with this?

Plus, Western medicine tends to be incredibly dogmatic. They often dismiss natural herbal remedies, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, chiropractic care, and similar approaches—all of which could easily be considered valid options.
I once injured my back and spent an entire year seeing doctors. One kept sending me for kidney tests (???) and just piling on the painkillers, until I finally decided to take matters into my own hands (ON MY OWN) and see a chiropractor. My back pain was gone in a month.
Another example: my husband had stomach issues. One doctor diagnosed him with ulcers, another said acid reflux, then it was some other random thing... who knows. Everyone just kept prescribing pills that did absolutely nothing for six years.
Finally, he went out on his own (ON HIS OWN) to see a practitioner specializing in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. She put him on a specific diet with herbal supplements and weekly acupuncture sessions. Now, a year later, he’s fine. No more stomach problems.
Third case: about six months ago, my husband herniated a disc in his back.
The doctors gave him painkillers, sent him to physical therapy, ordered epidural steroid injections, and even prescribed ANTIDEPRESSANTS (???).
Nothing worked. So now, he has again taken matters into his own hands (AGAIN, ON HIS OWN) by seeing a chiropractor, and he’s already feeling better—even though his doctor is basically telling him to just accept it and learn to live with chronic pain.
😲
So, yeah. Blindly trusting doctors... 👎

rustymoose54 said:So, what? You’d deny someone with hypothyroidism their necessary hormone replacement pills just because they happen to be pills?
Or would you deny a diabetic insulin because, hey, it’s a hormone?
Rachel Cook83 doesn't have a solid diagnosis yet—or maybe she does, but she has no clue. Neither of us knows for sure. So, making claims like "pills will hurt her" or "pills are her only hope" is just pure guesswork at this point.
Well, that was the whole point: the doctor hasn't even given her a diagnosis.
The absolute first step should be finding the actual CAUSE.
And once that's settled, if there are multiple ways to treat a condition, the patient should have a say after the doctor lays out the pros and cons.
Why?
Because it’s HER body.
How could I possibly deny anyone anything?
My point was simple: if you think a doctor isn't competent, go FIND A DIFFERENT DOCTOR. Don't just blindly follow one person—especially when you don't trust them, which seems to be the case with Rachel Cook83 and this physician.
I'd be looking for a second opinion specifically because this doctor didn't explain anything or offer any alternatives.
Pills can be harmful, and if there are other treatment paths that might suit Rachel Cook83 better, she has every right to see all the options and get the full story.
🙄
Let's not be naive here. Most doctors just hand you a prescription and wave you out the door because they rarely have enough time to actually focus on a single patient.
How many times do people get pushed into unnecessary surgeries or prescribed useless meds just because the initial testing was lazy and the diagnosis was wrong?
Unless you're one of the lucky ones who actually landed a great physician, the only way to get decent care is to take matters into your own hands.

rustymoose54 said:Yeah, the pill stops ovulation, which can totally mess up a regular cycle.
Seriously, Rachel Cook83, it would be such a tragedy if some random pill ruined your perfectly fine, lovely cycle. ☕
What’s the actual issue here?
The doctor should probably put in some real effort to find an alternative solution for Rachel Cook83, rather than just sending her home with a prescription and calling the problem "solved." 🙄
How terrible.😲

Rachel Brooks63 said:Why would anyone assume the doctor doesn't know what's going on? It seems pretty obvious we're talking about PCOS here. The doctor made a clear diagnosis and prescribed the right treatment. If there's any fault, maybe it's just that she didn't explain it well enough, but honestly, imagine dealing with someone in real life who refuses their medication just because they "don't feel like it." Every doctor struggles with patients like that...
The pill has serious side effects, so I guess Rachel Cook83 has a pretty valid reason for not wanting to take it.
In the real world, more people should probably be like Rachel Cook83 instead of blindly following whatever a doctor says.🙄

Rachel Cook83 said:I couldn't wrap my head around how she could claim all my hormones were fine when I have no clue what she was actually monitoring. She had me get blood work done three separate times—sent me off to do it repeatedly—for a mountain of tests, though I honestly don't even know what they were looking for. She did tell me I wasn't ovulating, though...
She suggested the pill just to stop the symptoms, specifically that daily spotting. But she couldn't give me a single actual reason why I was having these issues.
Oh, and since I’m not looking to have kids right now (given that my chances of conceiving are basically zero anyway), she told me we wouldn't be doing any more testing because, in her opinion, there was no reason to.
.
That doctor doesn't inspire much confidence in me.
Clearly, she hasn't a clue what's going on with you, so maybe just find someone else (hopefully someone with a solid recommendation).

A while back, my regular period just vanished. Since then, I’ve been spotting almost every single day—nothing heavy like a real period, but it’s constant. It's been going on for months... it's driving me absolutely crazy.
Has anyone else dealt with this?
And if you have any idea what might be causing it, please let me know.
(I went to my OBGYN and they said my hormones and smears are totally fine. They suggested I start the pill to regulate everything, but I ameeeeeeenot doing that—at least not right now.)
Go see a different doctor.
Just because someone has an MD doesn't mean they actually know what they're doing.
There are plenty of bad doctors out there.
