marissa nadler: songs III: bridge on the water

image

For those who aren't familiar, marissa describes her work as "traditional" folk ballads
She usually shows up in these romantic dresses, sporting this gorgeous long hair
And she possesses this strange, haunting ability to sing songs that feel permeated by a profound, creeping sadness 🙂

This is absolutely stellar her third album

“silvia, i met you in a belly of a whale”
“oh my lonely diamond heart misses you so well”

What I find genuinely fascinating about her songwriting is how she transplants her characters into this sort of "ancient" era, giving them a visceral, timeless quality. Throughout her discography, we keep encountering Mayflower May—marissa's alter ego—who seems to transcend marissa's own grief through themes of mortality and beyond. But I won't give too many spoilers away just yet... 😳

To be perfectly honest, I worry about marissa if she keeps churning out such melancholic albums; I truly hope she’s found some sense of equilibrium while navigating life in such a valley of tears 😢

Well, in my humble opinion, what we actually gravitate toward in music might not even be a matter of raw talent so much as it is a question of style—much like how we judge people in real life.
The only thing is, our friend Cyanide doesn't care one bit about style; he’ll always prioritize technical quality above everything else 🙂. That isn't necessarily a bad way to be, though it does lead us into that weird paradox where you can't truly discuss quality without first understanding style.

If there were a saint among us, they'd give every artist an equal shot, if it weren't for the fact that talent means absolutely nothing to God. At the end of the day, loving a certain style feels more "true" than just chasing quality, because style is essentially the soul of the music, haha 😕

Sending a kiss to everyone reading this: 😕

It was all right, I guess. Even the Dolls were a bit of a mess. We had everything from punk outfits to Dresden Doll vibes and people just tossing around Muse references. There were some decent outfits out there; the Concubine girls were definitely 🙏 ; plus those long-haired hippy types 😍. I even spotted someone who looked exactly like a Rujan Jeger lookalike. As for the music? It was mostly garbage.

I’ve decided I am definitely making an appearance tonight 😳

I'll even swing by to grab my winning ticket 😁

let's shake it up rule the world !!!! 👋 😬

stormyviper11 said:calling this a 😕 bit perverse 😁 is an understatement, especially since there are a few performers on that list I wouldn't mind having tie me up and do whatever they please with. 🤣 😈

Oh, 😁stormyviper11😘, you always seem to have something profound—or at least incredibly blunt—to contribute to the conversation.

Should I actually go to this? 😕 It sounds a little scandalous, 😁 especially since I feel such a deep connection to some of those performers.
🙂 This is exactly what my wild side and I are planning to tackle together

I’ve reached a point where I feel like music is actually boring me to death 😁

Daniel Stewart10 said:Fiona Apple’s "Criminal" is one of those rare tracks that feels less like a song and more like a confession whispered in a dimly lit bar at 2 AM. There’s a raw, jagged edge to her songwriting that most mainstream artists are too terrified to touch. When she sings about that magnetic, destructive pull of a toxic relationship, you don't just hear the lyrics—you feel the weight of them in your chest. It’s visceral, unpolished in all the right ways, and deeply unapologetic. Even decades later, it remains a masterclass in emotional vulnerability.

Horhé—he was like a father figure to me, along with a few others I’d rather not even bring up. 😛

Well, thanks a million. A lady with a piano... 👍

I suppose this thread hasn't completely gone off the rails yet 👍. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who contributed, especially since things were starting to take on a rather chauvinistic undertone 😁. That was uncalled for. Let me be clear: my apologies to anyone whose sensibilities were offended by the previous remarks (looking at you, 👋), because I certainly don't believe men are redundant 😁 regardless of whatever activities you think we're discussing here 😁. My thanks to you all.

😂 👍

I have to admit, Madonna is an incredibly cool individual, even if her artistic reputation has taken a bit of a hit over the years 😁. But the real story with Madonna isn't about her discography; it’s about her social convictions. I was recently revisiting her "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret" DVD, and the woman truly demonstrated that she stands for something 🙂. For instance, when she wanted to travel to a high-conflict zone in the Middle East and local authorities tried to block her because of the life-threatening risks involved, her response was basically, "Screw you, I'm going regardless" 🙏. And then there was that moment where she wrote a birthday song for her assistant, telling her she was the true star of the show—it actually moved the woman to tears. Honestly, Madonna rules 👍

Björk, huh... well, fair enough 🙂

ambermoose6 said:Look, Björk isn't really my cup of tea either... but honestly, she feels like a safer bet than Fiona Apple. If I push Fiona, we might end up with an empty room. 😬 Even though I’m running this listening lounge strictly for the love of music, I’m not above being a bit pragmatic and trying to turn a profit by blending art with actual appeal. 😁 Compromise can be a beautiful thing. 😉 Now, I just have to hope Dust is more obsessed with Björk than the two of us are... and that they actually own her entire discography, because I'm still missing quite a few pieces of that puzzle. 😁

I mean, Björk is cool and all, but I suspect there's a massive contingent of people out there who absolutely cannot stand her. 😁, since neither of us are hardcore fanatics, maybe we should consider Cat Power to lure in the indie snobs, or perhaps Kate Bush.

Wait, hold on—you can actually make money off this? 😲 If there's a profit margin involved, I'd do it in a heartbeat. 🤣

😁 😁 Honestly, I thought it sounded incredibly kinky—like an invitation to some sort of cozy, romantic candlelit dinner 😍—but clearly, I am the only one here with such a vivid imagination 🤣

Fine then. And if we just swapped out Björk for Fiona Apple instead, would that satisfy you? Fine, have it your way 😛

granitecrane said:Yeah, it’s a tragedy because it’s the truth. You see people's true colors during wartime—when villages are being torn apart and children are being killed on such a massive scale, and civilians are massacred. Still, I believe a decent percentage of global consciousness has reached a point where decapitation and mindless killing aren't seen as everyone's primary way to solve problems.

granitecrane's take on politicians 🙏 🙏 🙏

ambermoose6, I’d much rather have an ambitious evening themed around something like "fluff, fur, and fantasy"—something that allows for a subtle kind of lineage and gendered discrimination 😁. By that, I mean setting specific categories so that neither male nor female performers are excluded if they fit the criteria we intentionally establish 😛. But hey, you're the boss, so if you're against it, just say the word. Honestly, I think that would be a far more interesting concept to work on than some standard Tori/Björk/PJ listening party. And no, I’m not trying to force my opinion on anyone; leave me be 😛

granitecrane said:Human life carries less weight today than the lives of chicks in a Tyson poultry plant.

🤣What a sentence.

Honestly, if we lived in an era where beheading people was actually legal, I suspect far more men would opt for that over the messy, drawn-out process of just breaking up. 😁

ambermoose6 said:Hey, you were the first one to use that word, let me have my moment! 😠 😛 😉 🙂

I make it a point to mention that my tolerance for reality is incredibly low 😁—it’s an effective way to filter out most people from my life. 🥳

ambermoose6 said:Don't go rushing into anything... I am simply a wonderful creature.

I know, right? Honestly, if you were looking for someone to lend you money, I might consider it, though I haven't quite decided yet if I'd trust you with my dog. 😁

ambermoose6 said:And since you all keep referring to this as "our" listening room... listen, if anyone actually wants to run this place with me, step up and you'll have my blessing. Well, more of an acceptance, per se. It'll be a sidekick situation. 😉

🎉 Well, I'm certainly game, and I suspect dusty will want to serve as our consultants too. My only hesitation is the potential for political correctness within the listening room. Personally, I find it a bit reductive to pigeonhole music under a gendered lens, 😁 especially when the artists themselves would likely recoil at such arbitrary classifications.

granitecrane 😘

Henry wrote that absolutely stunning song, wasn't he? He was also the exact same man who managed to capture the hearts and minds of several women at once 😕 🙄

To me, Dustflower always brings Loreena to mind—or rather, it’s how I personally imagine her, just wandering through those ancient castles and enchanted gardens... 😁
