David Jackson2 said:It’s just not true that Black people can't handle dairy—I mean, maybe some can't, but you shouldn't paint everyone with the same brush. Plus, milk is actually a staple for several groups, like the Maasai, where they mix fresh milk with animal blood...

Lactose Intolerance

Some people have trouble digesting milk products because an enzyme that digests milk is missing from their body – a condition known as lactose intolerance. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, between 30 and 50 million Americans are lactose intolerant. This condition occurs more often in certain ethnic groups. In fact, up to 75 percent of all adult African Americans and Native Americans and 90 percent of Asian Americans consider themselves lactose intolerant.

Yeah, you're totally right there... I meant enzyme, but I typed hormone—just a slip of the pen. But honestly, making a typo doesn't change the actual point I was making about milk... It’s not like whether I wrote 'enzyme' or 'hormone' changes the facts...

I didn't realize things were getting this aggressive in here... Nice job calling out my grammar mistake, though...

I don't believe a single thing you say anymore, and I already told you that 🙂

Look, I'm not even trying to win you over. I'm just sharing what I know from my own life and what I've looked up online. You can keep sticking to those outdated textbooks and old theories if you want...

Megan Morales5 said:Yeah, that stuff at the grocery store is already pasteurized and everything... plus it’s got less fat in it too...

Pasteurized, sterilized, homogenized, diluted... honestly, it’s all just useless at that point. When you pasteurize everything, you end up destroying all the most valuable nutrients, including the lactase... it's just a shame...

So, I was reading about how those hormone levels actually drop if you go a long time without drinking milk... like, say, a whole year... and then they spike right back up once you start drinking it regularly again, maybe five days in a row... it's pretty wild how fast the body reacts to that kind of stuff...

That’s just plain nonsense. I honestly don't know where you're getting that from, because it's just not true... I've been there myself, so believe me when I say I know what I'm talking about...

If your theory were actually right, I should've kicked the bucket a long time ago... I've been pouring milk into my system for nearly 35 years now, and honestly, I can't even remember the last time I felt sick...
I think it was maybe three years ago when I tore up my arm playing soccer... but man, it healed fast...

Not everyone is cut from the same cloth... plenty of folks, even as they get older, still have enough lactase to handle dairy without any issues. But just because your stomach can process it doesn't necessarily mean it's actually good for you...

Michael Jones23 said:Can someone help me solve this mystery? Why do certain diets—like macrobiotics—completely cut out milk, yogurt, cheese, and all those dairy products? Meanwhile, you have nutritionists constantly preaching about how essential dairy is for building strong bones, boosting immunity, and fighting off bacteria or fungal issues... It just seems logical to me. I mean, babies rely almost exclusively on milk when they first start eating... so why isn't it good for adults?
What do you guys think is actually right? What’s healthier?
Am I totally off base here? 😕

Think about it... what other animal drinks or eats milk once they aren't little anymore? None. Not a single one (as far as I know). To digest milk, you need the enzyme lactase, and our bodies just stop producing as much of it as we get older. That’s why a huge chunk of people can't handle dairy. A lot of Black Americans and most people of Asian descent can't digest it at all—just imagine the sheer stupidity of people heading into parts of Africa trying to feed starving kids nothing but cow's milk!

Bottom line is, adults don't need milk... assuming, of course, they're eating well and getting enough calcium from other stuff.

That pasteurized milk you grab at Walmart isn't exactly a superfood either. It’s worlds apart from the raw milk straight from a cow or goat, which is packed with everything. Babies get high-quality breast milk, not processed cow's milk! I read somewhere online that a baby calf might actually die if it were fed nothing but pasteurized milk—I don't know if that's 100% true, but honestly, I wouldn't be surprised...

For years, I struggled with digestion issues and a sluggish metabolism. I wasn't eating much, but I couldn't lose weight—though I wasn't exactly overweight either. Everything changed once they found out I had a milk allergy. Since then, with just a few tweaks—mostly eating more veggies—my stomach has been fine. There was a time I used to eat Cokolesnik late at night, and by the time I got to my morning classes, my stomach would be growling so loud it was embarrassing. Once I quit the dairy, that stopped immediately.

Nowadays, if I have a small milkshake or chocolate milk here and there, I can usually get away with it, though even that sometimes gives me mild cramps or makes me feel bloated.

Dry nose, especially at night - any tips? in Health ·
Henry Wilson48 said:Basically, my nostrils have been so incredibly dry all winter—especially on the left side—that I’m actually waking up in the middle of the night from this sharp, stinging pain. It even feels like the ache is spreading up into my sinuses. 😢 I try using a humidifier and airing out the room, but nothing seems to touch it. It sucks because without that natural mucus lining to protect things, I feel like I'm just sitting ducks for every little virus going around.
Does anyone know why this happens or what I should be doing about it?

Thanks!

Could it be an allergy to dust, mites, formaldehyde, cigarette smoke, or something else entirely? Since we spend so much more time indoors during the winter, we're constantly bumping into those allergens. Plus, if you try to fix the dryness by adding moisture to the air, you might just end up inviting more dust mites...

Right now, my nasal passages are totally swollen, and my nose and throat are just burning. All of this is because my roommate smokes... she won't vent the room, so there's always a lingering trace of smoke or just her residue hanging in my space. I can handle moderate exposure to secondhand smoke without much trouble, but being stuck in this constant cloud? Not so much...

Flu shots [PLEASE READ FIRST POST!] in Health ·
Hey everyone... We actually had this exact same debate about a year ago. To save you some time, I'll just give you my take on why getting a flu shot is basically pointless and actually does more harm than good:
1) These shots are packed with stuff like formaldehyde—which is a known carcinogen—plus mercury, which is one of the most toxic things out there, and who knows what other nasty chemicals they're hiding in there
2) Because of all those toxins mentioned above, the vaccine can actually tank your immune system, making you even more vulnerable to catching the flu in the first place
3) Let's be real, the flu shot doesn't even stop you from getting sick; it just supposedly makes the symptoms a little less intense if you do catch it
4) If you really want to protect yourself, the best way is just to build up your natural immunity. Eat tons of raw veggies—and fruit too, though veggies are definitely better—and stay away from sugar and stress... that's where the real strength comes from.
Converting NTSC WMV to PAL VOB in Software ·
Jeremy Gray69 said:The big question is... how much of a headache is it going to be to add this subtitle file to a DVD?

Look, if you just want to hardcode them directly onto the video—that’s actually pretty straightforward. But if you're trying to add them as actual DVD subtitles? Man, that's a whole different beast. It gets messy fast. You'd first need some kind of tool like SRT2SUP to convert those subtitles into a SUP format, but then you run into another wall. You'll need something to fix the color palette in the specific VOB file because SRT2SUP tends to mess everything up... leaving you with a result that looks pretty terrible. Honestly, it's much easier to just burn them right into the image using something like VirtualDubMod or AVISynth... saves you all that trouble...
Converting NTSC WMV to PAL VOB in Software ·
Jeremy Gray69 said:You think that’s doable? It just seems logical to me that if I'm living here in the States, I really should have a PAL version. Does every single player actually support NTSC? What if someone is still rocking an old TV? I wouldn't want anyone ending up with a black and white picture or some other mess because of NTSC issues.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

More or less, pretty much any DVD player can handle both PAL and NTSC discs and adjust the output accordingly—so, if they're playing a PAL DVD, they can output either PAL or NTSC depending on what kind of TV you've got hooked up. Plus, since all the newer TVs can take both signals, I don't think it's worth stressing over too much.

By the way, if you were looking to convert PAL to NTSC, you'd typically use an "inverse telecine" process—or something along those lines. For instance, there's a plugin for VirtualDubMod that handles it. Honestly though, I don't think it's worth the headache...

Sensitivity to bright light? I deal with that too. Honestly, I’m pretty sure it’s just because I don't get enough time out under the Phoenix or in bright spaces anymore... my eyes have basically conditioned themselves to stay in the dark and just handle the glow from my monitor 😉. Plus, I've got those metallic prescription glasses...

How temperature affects sleep quality in Health ·
Alice said:I’m being totally serious here, and yet nobody is actually answering me.

Everyone seems obsessed with whether "naked" means you're sleeping without underwear or what! 🙂

Look, it might actually be the temperature swings in your room... I used to get sick all the time because I'd feel so hot when I first climbed into bed, but then the room would get freezing by 3 AM and I'd wake up shivering. Maybe try cooling the room down as much as possible before you hit the sack... if it still feels weirdly uncomfortable to sleep without pajamas after that, then just put some on...

- Coca-Cola used to contain cocaine.

- A tooth left in a glass of Coca-Cola will dissolve overnight.

The first one is a fact, but that second one? Not quite—just so we aren't confused.

Also, there are some pretty sketchy claims in here. It lists "The acids in Coca-Cola make it harmful to drink" as false, but we all know phosphoric acid is basically the worst part of Coca-Cola...

And honestly, someone clearly doesn't realize that "citric acid" is just standard citric acid found in almost every soda, most fruits, veggies, or even a bouillon cube from Campbell's...

As for spilling stuff on your keyboard—I once spilled some Pepsi and it wasn't the end of the world. Only problem was a few keys got kind of sticky because of the sugar. Maybe I just got lucky since I'm using an old Microsoft keyboard from back when they actually made great hardware...
Warning: Harmful cosmetic products! in Health ·
rustymoose54 said:Look, Ashley Watson, if you're going to throw hard facts about these products around, you better tell us who actually conducted the study and where it was published. Otherwise, this whole thing smells fishy...

Exactly! Once upon a time there was...

Honestly, this list feels a bit ridiculous to me. Almost every cosmetic product out there contains ingredients that could trigger an allergic reaction in certain people. Grouping all these products together based on just a few chemical compounds doesn't make much sense... Wouldn't it be smarter to list the specific chemicals first and then show which products contain them? This way is just kind of pointless. I don't know, maybe it was made just to smear certain brands, basically telling you "don't buy these things, go buy Avon, Old Spice, or Axe" instead... I just checked the ingredients in my Old Spice aftershave and my Axe deodorant, and both have denatured alcohol, which is a super common allergen...

For more info: http://allergies.about.com/cs/fragrances/a/aa022299.htm — definitely check out that second page. And as for those certain daily tabloids, I’d suggest just ignoring their articles. They love taking random scientific facts and twisting them into whatever sensationalized headline they need to sell papers...
How to wipe macOS in Software ·
Dana Ortiz67 said:I've got two versions of Windows XP installed on two different partitions on my hard drive.
What's the best way to wipe one version off its partition?

Honestly, you can just go in and delete the Windows, Program Files, and Users folders from that second installation... just be careful not to touch anything you might actually need later! You should also clear out hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys from that specific setup. Once that's done, pull up the C:\Boot.ini file, timeout set it to 0 and make sure default points to the installation you're keeping (if you're okay with hitting Enter or waiting a few seconds when the computer boots up, you don't even have to mess with the default setting). Finally, you can clean up the extra entries in the operating systems section of the Boot.ini, but only do that once you're absolutely certain everything is working right and your default is correct... because if you mess up, you might delete the very thing you're trying to boot into.

Can I just delete everything on that partition, or am I stuck formatting the whole drive and starting over from scratch?

No, you don't need to do anything crazy like that, and definitely don't format the drive. Just follow what I mentioned before... nothing too complicated.

Yeah—it’s not poisonous if you have a little bit once in a while (I mean, even Coca-Cola isn't poison 😉). But it’s definitely risky if you make it a daily habit!

bluewolf4 said:Yeah, you're right. I was thinking about bears, but I typed out Atheists instead... my bad.

Are you kidding me? What you were actually getting at sounds more like heretics, since they believe in things that theists don't. Atheists basically just don't believe—mostly because nobody can give them a straight answer to the question "What exactly is God?" so they can't even decide if they believe or not. Then there are antitheists, who actively believe God doesn't exist (they actually seem to understand what theists mean when they say "God," though...).

I don't get it... If you aren't going to talk, why even bother making an account on this forum?

Excuse me? 😕

Come on, where is smoking allowed besides bars and on the street? In the Cinema? At a department store? Grocery stores? It's banned in basically every indoor public space.

You put it pretty clearly there: "It's banned in basically every indoor public space." But wait... it's somehow totally fine in those public places where people hang out for hours, like bars or clubs... How much time do you really spend in a retail store? You walk in, buy your stuff, and leave. And besides that, would you even want to buy a shirt that reeks of cigarettes? Or a sandwich that smells like smoke? Not me. Same goes for when I step out of a cafe or a club and I'm absolutely covered in that smell...

bluewolf4 said:Those aren't really funny examples. Sure, everyone is welcome in a church, but Atheists don't usually bother going there just because they're a minority... and they certainly aren't showing up to protest religion.

Actually, Atheists aren't even protesting against religion. Or faith, for that matter. I think the word you're actually looking for is "antitheist," not atheist. And honestly, I don't know a single antitheist. Take me, for example—I'm an Atheist, but I still show up to a church when a friend is getting married or having a baptism...

Well, if you hate comparisons and examples that much, I can just put it this way: If you go to a place where everyone smokes, you aren't exactly welcome if you spend the whole night complaining about your rights.

That’s why we talk about our rights here, and not at a local pub. 😉

It's the exact same thing for a Non-smoker in a place where smoking is allowed.
Anything else unclear??????

The real issue is that smoking is basically allowed everywhere, and the non-smoking areas aren't physically separated, so people end up breathing in smoke anyway. Plus, even where it's banned, people rarely follow the rules. Nobody really calls them out on it, because what's the point? It won't change anything...
