Have you guys gotten your flu shots yet? in Health ·
Justin Fox said:If everyone just got their flu shots, the whole thing would disappear. But hey, there's always that certain group of people who think they know better than science...👎

Man, you've got it all wrong. If every single person actually showed up for those flu shots, Big Pharma would be sitting on a gold mine. It’s money straight from your wallet—or the taxpayers' pockets—right into theirs. That's the real reason to get the shot...😉

A few days ago I had a cheese pastry and washed it down with an 8-ounce carton of chocolate milk, and man, my stomach was not happy about it... A Coca-Cola actually helped a bit. 😁 Honestly, I always have a Coca-Cola with my pastries... It’s funny, when I was a kid, I used to have cocoa and toast every single morning before school. Now, I might grab a cheese pastry once a week—though I think it's more the grease than the cheese that gets to me—and maybe a chocolate milk or two shakes a month. Interestingly enough, those shakes don't seem to bother me as much...
steelstag4 said:But isn't the whole point that brown sugar is unrefined? 😕

Wait, didn't I already mention that (as far as I know, white sugar is basically just highly processed brown sugar)? 😕

Or are you just hung up on that word "unrefined"... like it magically makes something healthy or nutritious overnight? Refining is just a fancy word for processing...
steelstag4 said:2. So, what’s this whole hype about white vs. brown sugar?

Are you seriously suggesting brown sugar is somehow "healthier"? As far as I can tell, white sugar is just processed brown sugar... I highly doubt those little impurities in the brown stuff are actually vital minerals or vitamins. I mean... if you toss three cubes of sugar into your cocoa, you're basically getting less sucrose if you go with brown instead of white. It won't even taste as sweet. And if you want it to actually taste good, you’ll end up adding another half cube or a full cube just to compensate, which puts you right back at the same amount of sucrose anyway... So, how exactly is brown sugar better? I honestly don't get it. 😉 To all the brown sugar fans out there: prove me wrong! Honestly, though, I can barely even remember what raw sugar looks like anymore! 😁 I mostly just encounter it in pre-made stuff, like chocolate bars or sodas...
placidfox55 said:I honestly don't see why!! 😲 🙂

By the way, I occasionally use some hydrogen peroxide drops (DuPont) in my ear just to clear out the wax... 🙄 😁

And for real, I haven't had the flu in years. Makes me wonder though... was it the DuPont or maybe the vaccine? 😕 😕 😕

Oh man, you crack me up! 🙂 Don't go poisoning yourself with mercury from a shot! 😉 Maybe next time try using those peroxide drops when you actually feel a cold coming on (since you use them anyway) and we'll see what happens...
Back in the 1920s, this German doctor came up with this wild hypothesis. He believed that flu and cold viruses don't actually enter through your nose, eyes, or mouth, but through the ears instead. Because of that, he suggested this specific way to treat the flu: as soon as you feel those first symptoms creeping in, you drop a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide into your ear. You just let it sit there for maybe 5 to 10 minutes and then drain it out... though I think people usually try to rinse it with water afterward. When the peroxide hits your ear, it stings a little and starts foaming up. You do the exact same thing with the other ear, assuming both aren't infected at once. The idea is to keep repeating this every hour or two until the foaming stops happening. Apparently, if you catch it early enough, it works about 80% of the time. This was actually used over in Germany back in the day, but it eventually fell out of favor because mainstream doctors just flat-out reject the whole theory. I haven't actually tried it myself yet... but it’s been quite a while—maybe seven or eight years, or even longer, since I've had the flu, and I'm only 24... plus, I've never even gotten a flu shot... 😉

Nicole James said:I honestly think getting the bird flu shot is a lost cause...
The vaccine only targets bird-to-human strains, not whatever crazy virus actually triggers a pandemic...
Maybe focusing on the seasonal flu shot would be a smarter move.

Can you elaborate on that? From what I gather, vaccinating just weakens our natural defenses. Flu and similar illnesses are mostly issues with the immune system—meaning the people who get hit hardest are the ones with the weakest systems to begin with. Between the mercury and those other toxins found in vaccines, the shots might just be suppressing our immunity and making us more vulnerable to infections. Getting a flu shot doesn't seem like the brightest idea...

placidfox55 said:Or are we all just paralyzed by the fear of bird flu and ignoring the regular seasonal flu entirely?

What about the older folks in your family? Those with chronic health issues?...

Honestly, I haven't gotten my shot, I don't really want to, and yeah, maybe there's a bit of anxiety about the bird flu thing too. But I've always felt the best defense is just having a solid immune system—eating right, staying active, getting enough sleep. Just a few weeks ago, I was talking to my grandma about skipping the vaccine. I asked her if she’d ever actually caught the flu in her life... she said nope. And everyone else in the family gets it regularly, too. So I asked, why even bother? She just shrugged and said, "Well, that's what the doctors tell us." Well, whatever... 😉 It's all about moving those doses, isn't it? 😁

Wait, hold on... how are you even sleeping then? On your back? On your side? What does your neck even look like in that position?...

Dealing with depression? in Health ·
IggXy said:I mean, I’m not exactly bulletproof, but if things go south for me... I guess I'll just keep doing whatever they tell me to do and "suffer" quietly at home...

Oh, man... you're not gonna make it. Honestly, if you're trying to break into a creative field or anything like that, you're looking at an uphill battle... just saying.

What really got to me... I still have a few years of school left ahead of me, and then I see her on the forum posting about being out on medical leave for three months because of depression?!

I never actually finished college... mostly because I just kept putting things off for years on end. It’s frustrating because I know I’m actually pretty sharp and creative, but my focus, my memory, even my logic—everything has just completely tanked lately. I tried applying for a philosophy program this year, thinking maybe that was the move, but I absolutely bombed the abstract reasoning test. Total disaster. And honestly? It wasn't even because I didn't know the material. Some heavy emotional stuff hit me the day before and I just couldn't shake it. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't think straight, my brain was just pure chaos... Most days I feel like I'm basically incapable of getting anything done. I only find the spark when I realize I'm running out of time. That’s when I start slamming massive amounts of Coca-Cola or Pepsi just to force myself into gear... then I’ll pull an all-nighter, or sometimes two, just to finish a task. I guess I just can't function the way everyone else does...

I mean, honestly? Other people are out there actually getting things done while she’s just sitting at home moping around like she wants to wither away... People like that need a reality check. Honestly, give them some heavy-duty work boots and throw them into the toughest manual labor jobs imaginable. Maybe then we'll see if they still feel "depressed" when they stumble through the front door exhausted, too tired to even process how hard life is... instead of just spending the whole day wallowing...

So, what kind of work are we actually talking about here?...

I’m not saying we should banish depression altogether... I get that for some people, like someone living with a severe physical disability, it’s just an unavoidable part of the struggle. It’s hard to even wrap your head around how someone deals with that kind of hardship... but even then, people find ways to cope and move forward. But is it really fair? Should someone be pushed into a dark place just because society refuses to accept them for who they are?...

Am I really supposed to just skip right over the depression part after my parents spent my entire life emotionally tearing me down? Like, am I just being some kind of weakling or something... why am I like this? 😵 You really don't get it... For me, the emotional stuff hit way harder than anything physical ever could. I remember my mom used to beat me when I was little, just because I’d wet the bed or something... I wasn't crying because of the hits, and I didn't feel terrible because of the pain. It was her coldness that wrecked me. That total lack of affection, seeing her turn all that aggression toward someone—me—who hadn't done a single thing wrong... It stays with you. Most of the depression people deal with as adults? It usually traces right back to what happened to them when they were kids... The Brave Phone—looking at the different ways people deal with abuse...

IggXy said:People living with disabilities really show you how much someone can achieve when they actually give a damn... personally, I know this guy who’s paralyzed from the waist down... he’s even got a girlfriend... it might look funny to some, like seeing her pushing his wheelchair down a sidewalk in Chicago or walking right beside him, but he just keeps pushing through life. Even if he can't walk, he's accomplishing way more than most people out there... definitely more than those losers stuck in a depressive slump...

Do you actually know someone like that? Or are you just talking? How many people actually live like that?

Real heroes are forged in fire... depression is just proof that someone couldn't hack it. They basically prove they don't know how to fight, and their only legacy will be being one more name in a massive census. People with depression are the weakest links in the chain, and they're essentially choosing to fail...

You're the one who's "human garbage" here! What's your deal? Why'd you suddenly start attacking everyone? Did some girl dump you or something, and now you're taking it out on us? Look, by definition, depression isn't about having a weak character or making a choice—you're claiming the exact opposite, which means you don't even understand what you're talking about. You have no clue what depression actually is... you can't just snap out of it whenever you feel like it. Not even with meds—good grief, it takes weeks or even months just to start feeling a difference. And get this—most people end up depressed because of something specific that happened to them. It could happen to anyone... you aren't invincible...
Detox diets: Do they actually work? in Health ·
Based on Rule 5 of our community guidelines—which clearly says "No direct advertising"—this thread really ought to be pulled down. Plus, we should probably ban "ZA-ZDRAVLJE." They’ve already dropped two separate posts across two different threads they started, both just pushing detox products... one was about those patches, and the other was pretty vague, but definitely an ad. If someone's looking for that kind of stuff, they can just pick up a newspaper, call their doctor, or go find some wellness guru or a holistic clinic out in the suburbs.

nimblesurfer20 said:honestly, I just can't wrap my head around how any "medicine" is supposed to work if you have to swallow a pill the size of Jupiter just to make sure you've actually ingested a single molecule of the active ingredient...

Look, there's one thing to consider—even "real" medicine doesn't always work the way we expect it to. About 50% of the benefit from many standard drugs comes straight from the placebo effect... it's well-documented stuff. With antidepressants, for instance, that percentage is even higher—some SSRIs are barely more effective than a sugar pill. That's why I personally think it makes more sense to look into natural alternatives first. Not necessarily homeopathy, but things like chiropractic care, yoga, and so on...

Jessica White24 said:I’d honestly rather pay for a homeopathic treatment any day than deal with having to grease someone's palm at a doctor's office. And regarding demand? I have to wait weeks just to get an appointment with my homeopath, and there’s always a line... as long as they actually help me and everyone else, I really don't care what people say about where their remedies come from 🙂. Plus, a visit over there is maybe $150-$67 including the medicine itself. If I tried dropping that kind of cash on a regular MD, I doubt they'd even let me through the door... they usually deal in much larger amounts... but that's a whole other story. At the end of the day, people voted with their wallets, which is why these practitioners are still around. If it works for you, go for it... homeopathy works for me. 👋

Well, once you walk away from a homeopath and realize they were straight-up lying to your face, things feel a little different. I actually went out and paid a decent chunk of change to have a hair sample analyzed—you know, to check mineral levels, vitamins, and all those vital nutrients in your system. It was supposed to be done by some high-end lab in Switzerland, and I waited two or three months for it. I was so excited when the results finally arrived... I thought I could finally make sense of everything. When she handed me the results, she included this sheet of paper that was supposedly a guarantee that the analysis came from that specific lab. The results were laser-printed, sure, but the "certificate"? It looked like it had been typed on a vintage typewriter, crumpled up, and photocopied ten times over with a grainy stamp and signature. The worst part was, when I tried to take everything with me, she snatched the "certificate" back. It wasn't until I was already out the door that I put the pieces together and realized what happened. I agree that homeopathy can be a massive placebo effect, but this level of blatant deception? That's just wrong... it's predatory.

crimsonbison10 said:That doesn't mean acupuncture isn't useful in general, though. Given the nature of what they're testing—headaches, which are pretty subjective anyway—it’s not really surprising how the "study" turned out...

Exactly. And honestly, if acupuncture is just acting as a "trigger" for the placebo effect in certain cases like migraines, there's nothing wrong with that. I'd much rather lean on a placebo than swallow pills that mess with your system (I know sometimes you have no choice, but still...). Anyway, crimsonbison10—it's actually "in light of," not just "considering"—little grammar slips like that drive me a bit crazy... saw the same thing in an AAA newsletter recently...😉>
