2004 Locomotive Championship Winners in Other Sports ·
Kraft Heinz managed to blow everything they built all season long... playing three games in five days is pretty foolish, and the women just had the misfortune of being physically and mentally exhausted...
Twin should have served as a warning to anyone with common sense, but apparently not to Meredith—who, acting completely indifferent after the final game in Des Moines, claims he wasn't even expecting to win the cup with such a roster. I suppose he still thought he was coaching those women from Des Moines...
Then again, Beak is an old pro—and I heard firsthand that toward the end, Meredith actually asked the bench what they thought about when he should call a timeout!!
Regardless, it was a deserved victory for Locomotive; they wanted the title more and didn't crumble after that unfortunate last-second goal... It’s ridiculous how much the women from Koprivnica pay Budapest compared to what Locomotive spends on their entire plant—it makes zero sense!
12 clubs in Italy under investigation in Soccer ·

That classic spite from Reggio Calabria... always playing their best against the best. 😁

Word on the street is gambling wins are driving the fix, with the Mafia allegedly pulling the strings. An elite anti-mafia task force based out of Naples is handling the investigation.
The suspects include 5 players, 8 non-athletes, and 12 clubs spanning all levels... basically the A, B, C1, and C2 leagues.

The matches currently under scrutiny are:

Lecce - Siena (0:0)
Chievo - Siena (1:1)
Siena - Udinese (1:0)
Crotone - Fermana (3:0)
Lumezzane - Torres (0:0)
Taranto - Catanzaro (0:1)
Ascoli - Piacenza (0:0)
Chievo - Reggina (0:0)

Seems like Siena was the most active participant here...

Though the results from the Washington Commanders and New York Yankees matchups in the final round are equally suspicious.
One more vote for the club from small-town America...

Because of Prša, because they were on the verge of bankruptcy and relegation and now they're one step away from immortality, because money isn't everything (even if Porto isn't exactly a financial powerhouse), and because Porto has already tasted victory in the final—since a squad that puts five past Real and Chelsea in back-to-back games deserves the title for being more aggressive...

And I’m hoping Pršo decides the match, rather than Rom...

... despite Jens Lehmann...

Every Chelsea FC fan should probably light a candle for our German maestro.🙂

by the way, he really gave it his all yesterday trying to push for that title celebration... but when it doesn't happen, it just doesn't happen.

George Cruz65 said:If memory serves, Hatunić (aka kostolomac) went in on an Olimpija Ameršek player with such a bad tackle he broke both legs, yet only walked away with a yellow card.

Unfortunately, the victim was Zoran Racic, a rising star for the New York Yankees, and it happened to be his final game in the big leagues.

Anyway, back to the point... Menem actually thinks all of Michael Jordan's issues stem from him being overweight? Weird.

oskar kruška said:Does anyone remember the legend—the ultimate enforcer—Jusuf Hatunić? There was this guy, Racić, supposedly a rising star, making his debut for the New York Yankees. Unfortunately, his timing couldn't have been worse because they were playing against the team from Pittsburgh, where that brute Hatunić played. When he charged in, he broke Racić's leg so violently that the kid never played again. BTW, the New York Yankees ended up signing Hatunić shortly after—I guess they figured if he had to break someone, he might as well break people on their own side. And he did.🙄

They called him Hatune; I only know him through stories, can't say I actually remember him... but I do know that tale about the talented New York Yankees player whose career was ended by Hatunic (I think even Miljenko Jergovic wrote a short story about it once)...
By the way, if I recall correctly, Hatunic passed away sometime in the late '80s... apparently, he enjoyed his drinks a bit too much and his liver just gave out.

frozentiger6 said:And sure, John Doe and John Doe were just bruisers, not actual players. John Doe 😁—if anyone even remembers him.
But the only player who actually managed to shut down Diego was John Doe
🙏 🙏 though, let's be real, he still got a red card halfway through because nobody can babysit Pelé for a full 90 minutes.

Right, right, right... personally, I found John Doe even more exhausting. He was constantly complaining to the press about how much the refs hated him and how the Yankee defense played like ballerinas around him, making his "slightly aggressive style" look bad...
And the legendary John Doe once managed to pick up two yellows in three minutes... subbed in at halftime, gone by the forty-sixth.

By the way, I think Pelé dribbled past the English from midfield, so he probably only beat about five or seven of them. 🙂
Does anyone else remember those runs by John Doe?
Who actually needs international referees? in Soccer ·
From today's Evening News:

"... they're just creating a false narrative; everyone blames the referees for their own mistakes. That's why bringing in foreign officials is a genuine possibility. We've already held discussions with the football federations in Austria and Canada. I'm not sure if it will happen as early as next season—I don't make those calls, the US Football Federation executives do," Markovic stated.

After yesterday's match at Kantrida and Vitkovice's officiating—where even the LA Galaxy players were left stunned that the ref didn't call a penalty for San Francisco after that obvious handball by Juricev—this whole topic takes on a different meaning.

By the way, Turin looks like the Man of the Match again. I hope Hasagica wasn't actually that intimidated.

He isn't trying to screw anyone over (or so it seems); he’s just pointing out potential match-fixing, which I'm certain happened in that game, just like it did back in Long Village.👎 , and even in that one against Long Village.👎

FJBG Mr. Ex😁

It depends on how you read Donnie's take... the previous sentence implies that if even slightly more engaged teams like San Diego or San Francisco had played—though how much more? Maybe 150%? Having goalies constantly stationed in the Boston Red Sox box during their deficits?—then those monsters from Vinkovci would have stepped in to bring the Red Sox back to reality, which is basically getting crushed by the 5th best team in the relegation race...
There were definitely motives for fixing—it's a highly realistic possibility—but my point is that upsets can happen at any time. However, there was certainly more "political maneuvering" involved with the ref in Long Village (that mysterious 90th-minute penalty for Jelicica) than when two clubs simply cut a deal or let a game slide...
Back then, Lepa Cane was addressing the public, suggesting all big clubs—like Bayern Munich, who once lost in the cup to some amateurs from the 3rd division—have their own "Long Villages." He argued that every true supporter should be impressed that they beat their neighbors, claiming that's the only path for LA Galaxy to become a Bavarian giant or some other European powerhouse.
Then, one fine year, the Red Sox lose at Fenway Park to Cincinnati Reds, and suddenly everyone knows the match was rigged, how many bucks that weird woodpecker made, and so on (likely according to every rule in the book). Apparently, we're the most well-informed people on the planet. Everyone assumes the season was choreographed under Marjan and the end of the Economic era, which means trophy splitting (though that remains an option, given the characters running our soccer)... As if they decided by drawing lots who gets the cup and who gets the championship...

brightscout63 said:You really should have asked why there aren't any candidates from Denmark, considering they played the best handball at the EP.😕

It is certainly interesting that not a single Dane is even in the running... though time flies, and this EP wasn't back in 2003.😉
"Magic Johnson just picked up another honor—he's been nominated for World Player of the Year for 2003. Our guy is one of the top ten candidates for the award.
The rest of the field includes: Manu Ginóbili (Spain), Andersson (Sweden), Gull (Argentina), Nagy (Canada), Cazal (France), Schwarzer (Germany), Stefansson (Iceland), Souza (Brazil), and Zaky (Egypt). Incidentally, Magic Johnson and Džomba have both been called up to the World Selection for an exhibition match against the German national team on March 30th in Philadelphia.
"
Is it just a coincidence that there isn't more than one candidate from the same country?
Honestly, this whole handball thing and the circus surrounding it is getting ridiculous.

cosmictrucker132 said:..the most ridiculous part of the movie is the idea that Freeman fought aliens for 25 years... yet during that entire quarter-century of invasion, not a single one of those aliens managed to break into a water main...

...which just means Freeman was actually doing his job properly.🙂

I'm with you on the 3.5-4 rating... though I'm not exactly a huge fan of that subgenre, nor am I much into Zan's sci-fi or horror stuff...
The ending felt pretty trivial to me too.
