Why are capitalists so afraid of worker cooperatives? in Close to Politics ·
Rachel Roberts6 said:I’m 100% with the bolded part here.
Looking at it that way, it makes me wonder why American capitalists always seem to target companies that used to operate under worker-management systems.
Like, why didn't Luke Rajic just start his dairy empire from scratch? Instead, he was basically handed Gold coin on a silver platter because of some "merit." Who knows, maybe a worker-run Gold coin would’ve ended up being even more successful than Rajic's version.

Instead of building their own businesses, why did the "workers" simply strip the private owner of the municipal dairy in Washington, D.C.?

Hannah Alvarez2 said:Hey there,

This is my first time jumping into the econ threads, and honestly, I’ll be the first to admit—I don't know much about this stuff. It’s pretty much all Greek to me.
So, I was scrolling through some news on CNN (yeah, yeah, I know, it can be a total circus), and they were talking about how Japan’s national debt is sitting at 200% of their GDP. We just saw all that chaos unfold in the USA because of massive debt levels, and let's face it—half of Europe, including us, is basically living in a state of debt slavery right now.

My big question is: who actually owns all this debt? Which institutions are we beholden to? And who really holds the keys to the kingdom when it comes to ownership?

1) Do not conflate your own identity with that of the state.
2) In the case of Japan, the debt is primarily owed to its own citizens—mostly retirees and those approaching retirement age. Any attempt to "write off" such debt would be nothing short of robbing those very people.

Just kill me now. This is a corporate-issued laptop, not mine, and I have absolutely zero desire to be poking around in the BIOS.
This is just ridiculous. -.-

This might come across as a bit of a silly question, but I figured it was worth asking.
I have this specific laptop model where all the function keys are hardcoded by the manufacturer to perform these useless little tasks—switching to a projector, adjusting volume, and so on.
There is an Fn key intended to allow the standard function commands, but besides being incredibly impractical, it doesn't even work for some reason.

How can I configure the keyboard to ignore its primary shortcuts and instead provide me with actual F10 or similar inputs?
It would be logical to handle this through the Keyboard settings in the Control Panel, but naturally, that option isn't there. -.-
I suspect their ultimate endgame is to secure legal recognition for everyone else through legislative mandates, state-sponsored education, and—if all else fails—through the sheer force of social pressure, ensuring they are deemed "normal" and equal to the rest of society

But now we move on to marriage; let’s discuss that particular complication next.

Didn't you receive a disc containing all the necessary manufacturer drivers when you originally purchased that laptop?
Are you running a flat installation and have you checked Windows Update yet?
I fail to see why you would even bother hunting down drivers on a DVD for Windows 7.
Excellent.
This implies that our domestic tourism industry can actually command higher rates than its competitors.
Robin Rodriguez5 said:It basically boils down to this: we’ve got an unemployed priest trying to baptize lambs.
We’ve been leaning on tourism as our primary lifeline for way too long. We could actually make some real money if the global number of travelers wasn't shrinking—and if they actually acted like locals. Imagine if they woke up at dawn, played some lawn games, and were tucked in by 9 PM. Every major news outlet is reporting a massive slump in arrivals this July. There was even a solid analytical piece over on Index covering the whole mess:

And then we have the usual nonsensical arguments claiming that America is simply too expensive and that we need to slash prices... Look, I assume the people actually running the businesses know exactly what their margins should be.
nimbleharbor10 said:Look, this isn't some novel issue; it’s a cycle that repeats year after year, not just on Maui, but in a thousand little towns all across California. As long as church bells are allowed to wake up tourists in the early morning, they might as well go ahead and ban walking through the center of "town"—and I use quotes there because, let's be honest, Maui isn't really a city; it's more of a tiny village, a cute little spot filled with old stone buildings that perhaps functioned as a city back in the Middle Ages, but today it's nothing more than a tourist trap. Next, they'll probably try to ban drinking alcohol in public spaces, insisting everyone patronize "diverse establishments with an extensive selection" instead.

The whole concept strikes me as ridiculous. People don't travel to Maui looking for "museums" or "high culture." They come for the ocean and the relaxation. There is infinitely more culture to be found in the major European cities these travelers are coming from. Besides, if someone happens to strip down (or just stay in their swimwear) in a park or by a river in the middle of Chicago, nobody thinks twice about it, no one is shocked, and nobody feels threatened. It's summer; people swim and sunbathe, which is perfectly normal behavior. New York allows men and women to walk through the city center shirtless, yet compared to a metropolis like New York, Maui acts like a den of debauchery.
Not to mention how, in the center of almost every city in Europe, people stroll around in the summer wearing shorts, tank tops, and all sorts of non-traditional clothing without anyone batting an eye.

Bottom line: dear Maui, you aren't getting my money.

And so what? Is it really asking too much to expect people to behave decently in public?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) in Movies ·
About a week ago, I started hearing all this noise about how men are essentially pigs, and how feminism is apparently the ultimate cinematic standard based on some book by a rather feminine Swedish journalist. The plot supposedly involves some heavily tattooed, ultra-feminist, lesbian protagonist investigating crimes—while inevitably falling for a "good guy," liberal type—and the villains are always a convenient mix of misogynists, Nazis, and powerful old white men (all at once). Well, that exact film aired on PBS today.

It’s not that I didn't give the movie a fair shake (did I mention there were supposed to be lesbians 🙂 ), but once I laid eyes on an even uglier version of Trinity (how is that even possible?) sporting a bull ring in her nose 🙂

I couldn't finish it. ☕
Do US national conservatives actually support capitalism? in Close to Politics ·

It feels like someone is stirring the pot behind the scenes somewhere.

Seriously though, why does nothing ever actually get cheaper in this efficiency-obsessed version of capitalism?

If things actually got cheaper, there wouldn't be any excess profit left to grab!

Wrong. ☕ Every life holds equal value; every life is equally "sacred." You didn't create it, so you have no right to take it away.

And my comparisons weren't an attempt to invoke Nazism; those ideologies are thousands of years younger than the sentiments I'm referencing—roughly as old as when people used to claim "The life of one serial killer is worth more than all the slaves/Black people/Asian people on this earth."
Thankfully, those eras are behind us. Yours will be too. 👍
Let’s talk about human life. If we follow your logic to its natural conclusion, why isn't a head of lettuce worth as much as a dog? You might argue it’s because dogs possess sentience while lettuce does not, but then again, there are plenty of people who insist plants feel pain. To me, both arguments are equally absurd; your stance is simply a byproduct of being biologically closer to a dog than a vegetable, making it naturally difficult for you to identify with a head of lettuce.

James Mitchell11 said:Dogs only become aggressive if their owners teach them to be that way by inciting them against other pets, people, or animals.
Honestly, whenever I see an owner egging their dog on toward a cat with commands like "Get him!" or "Kill it!", it makes my stomach turn and my blood pressure skyrocket. I’d love to see those people held accountable.
Eventually, these dogs end up attacking children or pregnant women...
And at the end of the day, the owners are the ones to blame.
I'm all for humanely euthanizing truly dangerous dogs, but I also think we should strictly ban the importation of aggressive fighting breeds altogether.

Charles Lopez3 said:Nah,
I just don't see it that way because honestly, there’s no such thing as an inherently aggressive dog—it's all about irresponsible owners and a broken society.
Most of the time, these animals are stuck being raised by complete amateurs or people who just want trouble.
Personally, I wouldn't let anyone own even a tiny Chihuahua without making them sit through some serious training classes first to learn how to actually handle and raise a living creature properly.

That isn't true. Dogs are inherently aggressive animals that survived in the wild by hunting in packs or scavenging carcasses. The fact that certain breeds today don't seem particularly aggressive toward humans is merely because we have selectively bred them just as we breed cattle to meet specific needs. We find ourselves circling back to the reality that they are tools utilized by the human species.

And you think you know who I am and how much I've helped???😕

Well, look at this. Humans are more important than any animal, so if someone wants to help animals, they shouldn't do it at the expense of people—which is exactly what's happening here.

Just so you know—animals were around long, long before humans ever showed up, and they certainly didn't need us to survive. Any species that couldn't figure out how to look after itself just... died out. It's called natural selection—not that I'm trying to lecture you or anything, I guess.
In the real world, animals don't exist just so we can play caretaker—and I guess humans don't exist to serve them either. It’s honestly a disgrace that human ego has messed with the natural abilities of certain species. So, really... it doesn't matter if we're talking about a Great White or some stunted house pet.☕

Is there even a law to protect those hungry, cheated people just shivering out in the cold in front of the factory?!

Why? 🤷 Does this logic still hold up? Is it always "white men matter more than...", "Americans matter more than...", or "heterosexuals matter more than..."? Where do we draw the line? Is a surgeon inherently worth more than a newborn baby? A local from the Midwest? Exactly where is that boundary where one life becomes more sacred than another? Is a serial killer truly more valuable than a search-and-rescue dog digging survivors out of earthquake rubble? Ah, those delicious little moral dilemmas... ☕

How exactly does that work? At the expense of real people.Let’s be clear about what happened here. We are talking about a man who ran an irresponsible backyard breeding operation and tried to dump the entire burden onto you. I know it might not look that way on the surface, but think about it. The money you pay in taxes goes toward funding resources like food for animals just like these. In the end, his little scheme failed—not because of any grand plan, but because his dogs ended up dead. They needed to breathe, for God's sake, and he simply forgot they did.
So, what now? He screwed up. Fine. Let's just forgive him and all chip in a few thousand bucks in a couple of months once he actually delivers. Next. Dump it in a shelter and let those idiots from the network of associations deal with it.
Once they fix one thing, they’ll just roll out the next mandate. Then it's a domino effect—the neighbor follows suit, then the guy next door, and before you know it, we're all working ourselves to death like idiots just to foot the bill for their dog disposal fees.
It’s not even about some grand debate over humanity toward dogs right now. It’s simpler than that. We're talking about preventing a total free-for-all where animals tear each other apart, leaving carcasses scattered everywhere. If we actually followed standard US sanitary protocols—you know, to ensure you don't catch some nasty disease from rotting remains because your human ego makes you think you're invincible—it would cost a fortune. That's the bottom line.
Well, I’m not footing the bill.

Let me give you a little lesson instead: domesticated animals exist ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY because of human intervention. Their ecological niches DO NOT EXIST, and not a single one of those animals WOULD HAVE SURVIVED without human involvement. They CANNOT survive on their own in the wild because they were created through a process called ARTIFICIAL SELECTION. For example, dairy cows were bred specifically for milking, and they actually SUFFER from INFLAMMATION if they aren't milked daily. There's your "education." This is basic stuff taught in elementary school.

I know the truth hurts.

Domesticated animals don't belong to the true natural world. Since human egoism has broken something, it leaves it to human responsibility to fix what was created. Look, just as you—as a responsible member of society—have to take care of yourself, your family, your car, your house, your trash, and clean up your own crap, you also have to take care of your animal. It shouldn't matter if it's a shark or some retarded dog. If you own a dog, you pick up its shit and you handle its puppies, because you'll be the one answering for it if I step in its mess or if its pups get in my way. Is that clear? Crystal. If you don't like it, there's a simple solution: don't own a dog.
Would you tolerate that guy dumping his wrecked car in your driveway? Or would you expect some non-profit organization to clean it up using your tax dollars and pay for the hauling and recycling? No? Well, for God's sake, why would you tolerate him dumping his litter of puppies in your yard? Or expect that your tax money should fund an association to deal with those pups?
I know the answer: because you think everything will just work itself out and nobody will care.
Fine, but where does a lunatic leave the carcasses? By the side of the road? Tossed in the river? Where are kids going to catch diseases? Where will flies from dead dogs end up—on people's tables and food? How shortsighted can you be!?

Laws are either enforced or they aren't. As long as certain people are treated as more equal than others under the law, we're stuck, my friend. It's sad you can't see that.
And at the core of this whole thing, dogs aren't more important than people.
It comes down to social responsibility—specifically, the responsibility to take care of your own dog's puppies at your own expense and according to the law, instead of dumping them on society. And society is made of people.

@Natalie, I noticed you're running on 1GB of RAM. If you want even a semblance of a functional experience, you really ought to install another 1GB. I don't know exactly how resource-heavy your software load is, but 1GB is practically prehistoric by modern standards. While you're browsing through something like Newegg, check the specifics—what exact RAM module are you currently using?

Am I being questioned because I opened them in that specific order? It’s because otherwise, the taskbar shifts and scatters my programs everywhere, forcing me to hunt for what I need every single time I try to select something.

Is that explanation sufficient for you?

Jonathan Morris40 said:Let’s be honest: not everyone can just drop a small fortune on a top-of-the-line, high-end workstation. It really comes down to the budget—you get exactly what you pay for when it comes to your setup.

Windows XP is so incredibly stable that when an application finally decides to hang, you can hammer the Ctrl+Alt+Del combo sixty times in a row without it even flinching. At that point, there’s no software workaround left; the only thing that actually works is physically slamming the reset button on the tower.

I’m seeing the exact same thing on Windows 7, and it looks identical to how it behaved back on Windows XP. To make matters worse, I've actually been hit by the Blue Screen of Death even more frequently on this setup.
Windows Aero was truly a godsend for those who had never even laid eyes on a computer, let alone understood the intricacies of computing—especially the older generation, like your typical aunts and grandmothers, who were often just clicking blindly without the slightest clue what they were doing. Beyond that, it provided a much-needed boost for power users who juggle heavy multitasking workloads and manage a constant stream of simultaneous operations every single day.

🤣
It’s exactly as Benjamin King2 pointed out: RAM is currently the fastest tier of memory we have available. From a purely logical standpoint, the more data you can load directly into your RAM, the faster your system can execute tasks. It’s basic efficiency. As for those complaints regarding bloated RAM usage, background processes, and startup programs—honestly, if someone doesn't actually understand how to configure their Windows environment to suit their specific needs, they shouldn't be criticizing the operating system itself. If you don't know how to properly manage your tools, you haven't truly mastered them.

How exactly does that serve as a valid argument for Windows 7?
And besides, the point isn't really about what Microsoft intends or thinks. The crux of the matter is that you, as the user, should have the freedom to build and configure your system exactly how you see fit. At the end of the day, everyone deserves the right to make their own choices.

How much more RAM are we actually talking about when we compare it to the old Windows XP days? It’s a significant leap, to say the least. 🤷 Giga? Honestly, does anyone even bother with machines that have less than 2GB of RAM these days?

Why is everyone obsessed with the idea that this needs to be four times faster? It doesn't have to be. Honestly, if it just performs on par with Windows XP, I’m satisfied. To me, the raw speed isn't the headline here; what actually matters is whether they’ve finally fixed the management tools, refined User Account Control, and overhauled the wireless and connectivity protocols. I also want to see them streamline and simplify disk management along with a dozen other systemic improvements. Those structural refinements carry far more weight than some arbitrary benchmark for "ultra-speed." At the end of the day, what am I actually going to gain from increased velocity? Rapid-fire switching between windows and applications? I fail to see the practical purpose in chasing that kind of marginal utility.🙂

Kudos to the improvements under the hood—I actually quite like the updates they made to user accounts—but my experience working in Windows 7 has been...
To be perfectly honest, I haven't observed any meaningful improvements regarding system stability.
They’ve completely butchered the user interface. It's an absolute disaster.
You've got to be kidding me. Honestly, even my two-year-old brother wouldn't buy that line for a second. 😲😕

Hold on, who actually claims that the "XP shell" is lacking anything? On the contrary, that interface dominated the market for nearly a decade; people became fundamentally accustomed to it, particularly the GUI. If they were to overhaul it entirely overnight, what would be the result? Pure confusion and chaos. Users wouldn't know how to navigate their own machines. Not everyone using a computer is a systems engineer, a designer, or a programmer. There are plenty of 50-year-olds who just finished a basic computer literacy course and previously didn't even realize a computer required a monitor to function. There are far more people like that than there are tech specialists.

Scrolling? Please. Once you have mastered working in Windows XP, you will have memorized every possible shortcut. At that point, all you really need to do is hit Win + R and launch the application you require.

You mention Microsoft's laziness. If you truly consider yourself the polar opposite of Microsoft, why don't you just move all your program shortcuts to the desktop? That way, you won't have any issues with scrolling.😍

That is a massive generalization that I don't even care to address. KMPlayer works perfectly, GOM Player works excellently, and BSPlayer works great. In fact, they often perform better now than they did on XP.

I can't speak to Corel video editor, but I highly doubt you purchased an official license and attempted to work with genuine, licensed software. If you had, I am certain a reputable company wouldn't be charging money for a half-baked product that fails to run on Windows 7. So, if you intend to pick a fight with Windows 7 by showcasing cracked software, don't bother—the OS wasn't built for that.

As for cracked programs, they actually tend to run more reliably on Windows 7 than they ever did on XP.👍

By the way, my eyesight is perfectly fine.

Yes, I also find that programs run better on this machine than they did on my old XP rig, but that machine only had 256 MB of RAM, whereas I have 3 GB here.

We are discussing an operating system that doesn't even feature an "Up" button.

We are talking about an operating system that refuses to let you sort open applications on the taskbar by the order in which they were opened.

While it might be a necessary evil due to drivers and application compatibility, I certainly won't say I enjoy using it.
