The irony, I suppose, is that the kid was killed while he was essentially just trying to do the right thing—which, honestly, happened almost by accident because that bully only pulled the knife to try and scare him off rather than actually intending to kill him.
watched it.
And I regretted it. Honestly, I went in with the best intentions to see this movie; I didn't have any preconceived notions, nor had I been swayed by those glowing reviews (claiming it’s the best American film since the 90s—seriously??), mostly because I hadn't even read them. But, my friends, that final segment about a couple on their first trip involving hallucinations, flying over Miami, Dina Meyer, a grandmother, and sailors... ugh... there are just some things I can't stomach, even if they come from Americans.
I suppose I'm also a bit disappointed it was such a short set... and that I didn't have enough cash on me to pick up a CD or a t-shirt. Oh well, I guess I might get another shot at it in a year or so.🙂 They’ll be back eventually, right?
After the show, we headed outside to grab some air. I think I still held onto this tiny shred of hope that they’d come back out for an encore when we saw them heading back inside. Then, at the entrance, some woman actually stopped the bearded guitarist and demanded to see his ticket. He looked completely lost until my friend explained that he was actually in the band. 😵 😁
Ah, well, I guess it won't be happening anytime soon here in the States. 🙂
My first thought regarding this topic—there are just such high expectations
the talented Mr. Ripley
Amélie & Lord of the Rings
artificial intelligence
As for The Godfather, I suppose someone once remarked it was basically just an adult film aired on a secondary cable channel.
I figured someone would take issue with this. I actually intended to finally sit down and watch it, but I guess I don't get to decide what stays on network TV 😢 😁
Once upon a time in Rome.
that would be a holiday in Rome
I haven't actually sat down to watch The Godfather yet (Sex and the City was on the other channel 😁), so I suppose I'll have to borrow it from the local video rental shop eventually. Maybe.🙂
There are a few others I haven't gotten to, though I probably should:
- the complete Kubrick collection
- Roman Holiday
- Gone with the Wind
- Ben-Hur or Quo Vadis
- Breaking the Waves
- Pulp Fiction😵
- My Private Idaho
...
"The Arizona Werewolf" - I caught this on PBS recently. It was an absolute mess, a movie completely devoid of logic or purpose. I’d say it easily cracks my top five worst films ever made.
On a more positive note:
"The Hole"
A teen horror flick starring Thor Birch—that’s enough for me, I suppose.
"The Other Sister"
Another one with solid casting: Giovanni Ribisi and Juliette Lewis playing a somewhat unstable couple. A few tears, a few laughs... it was an okay watch, I guess.
Edward Norton is fantastic. And honestly, she’s stunning too—I can't quite recall her name, though she plays Naturelle Rivera in the movie.
Rosario Dawson. The only non-American in the whole cast, and in a Spike Lee film, no less!
I suppose Ed might actually be the coolest actor out there right now; his presence alone is probably enough reason to give this one a shot. He didn't miss the mark this time either—*25th Hour* is easily one of the best films I've seen all year, and that "forget you" scene in the restaurant restroom is pretty much legendary.
The ending is its own entire experience... but I guess I shouldn't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.
I’d suggest watching it as soon as possible.
Out of all the theaters, the one in downtown Washington, D.C. is hands down the absolute worst. I’ve spent years avoiding it, though lately, I suppose I’ve been forced to cave under different circumstances. It feels like the most provincial little cinema in the city, and the audience always seems to laugh at all the wrong moments.
I wouldn't say that theater is the worst one out there—it's not even close—but the crowd is definitely unhinged. In my entire life, I have never been anywhere else where people were literally clapping, but there, it happens almost every five minutes, as if I were sitting in some cursed theater troupe performance!
I'd say the local AMC is actually the worst, mostly because it's such a small, pathetic venue with terrible sound and uncomfortable seating. But of course, I always end up finishing my night there because it's statistically impossible for them to sell out, which I guess speaks for itself.😉
I suppose *Playing by Heart* is a decent enough watch, though it doesn't exactly leave a lasting impression, if you ask me. You have an interesting premise and a solid ending, which helps, but even that star-studded cast can't quite save it—especially Ryan Phillippe, who, I suspect, might be out of his depth here. Some stretches feel a bit forced, or perhaps just unnecessarily drawn out; when those sluggish moments pile up, you're left with a collection of rather uninspired and awkward dialogue. It makes the overall experience feel somewhat weaker toward the end than it does during the middle, at least for me, especially if you happen to catch it a second time.
