How to fight for justice on a forum... in Feedback & Suggestions ·
honestly, calling it an insult is being generous because it’s actually both
Moderating the PDF Yugoslavia on Politics in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Since the whole landscape of American politics has shifted so much lately, I’d say this particular discussion has pretty much become a relic of the past
let’s just give the new moderators some breathing room to establish the new status quo, and then we can actually get back to talking about it

I’m going to be generous enough to just shut this topic down myself
I honestly think it’s only fair to give the new mods a chance to step up and take over

I just wanted to clear things up
anyway, we’ve got way too much of this "tradition of rhetoric" everywhere you look, honestly
it seems like everyone is always at fault except for the one person who actually pulled the trigger, and we all love to blame some outside force for our own absolute messes
🙂

Look, I’m not about to go around handing out bans on someone else's subreddits, but I firmly believe that every single user is solely responsible for what they post.
That goes for Constantinopolov too—they should answer for their own words, just as any other user here should be held accountable for their own posts when they choose to act a certain way.
At the end of the day, we're all human beings, and we have to have some level of empathy; occasionally, someone is going to slip up or miss the mark, purely from a human perspective and in the spirit of keeping the discussion policy healthy.
Speaking of which, I’ve got my own hands full with my son, so I find myself being a bit too lenient from time to time, even when compared to my own usual standards.
But, in my humble opinion, direct insults really ought to be removed, if they aren't outright sanctioned.

driftingdriver, I have to say, I strongly disagree with you on this one!!
Insulting people just isn't okay, no matter what the context might be.
I honestly have no idea who or what this "Constantinople" character is supposed to be, but frankly, the posts being linked here are absolutely bottom-of-the-barrel.
Sure, a topic can be framed in a biased way or even set up by trolls, but we simply cannot—and should not—allow personal attacks to slide.
If anything, we've seen threads like this before where the users actually used their brains to steer the conversation back toward something sensible.

Rachel Sanchez11, one guy’s out in the brush, the other’s stuck on the concrete
one side’s got a bucket of water ready to go, while the other is surrounded by paper and plastic trash
one’s downwind, and the wind is just carrying all that filth right toward the other guy...
can we just call these two nothing more than two different ways to ruin a BBQ??
😉
some people will jump in and say you aren't even allowed to fire up a grill in the summer
others will probably wonder why we're only talking about it during the summer months
then there's a third group who will argue that since we're heading toward joining whatever European regulatory mess comes next, they should just ban grilling across the entire continent

I think you get where I'm going with this, even if you're finding it a bit difficult to admit
it doesn't matter, at least be honest with yourself
🙂
No matter how you spin it, there’s always going to be some bureaucrat somewhere who feels the need to step in and ban the damn BBQ
and it isn't because they have a personal vendetta against people trying to have a good time, it’s actually for much heavier reasons than that
What those party-goers can't seem to grasp is that those reasons don't change the fundamental reality of what's happening
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, Maria Thompson2, you just cherry-pick the parts that suit your narrative and conveniently ignore everything else that doesn't.
🙂
We’ve already explained that the software itself doesn't give a moderator the power to just hand out bans on a whim—look at something like CUDA, for instance; that software wasn't some local homegrown project, and it certainly doesn't carry the signature of any particular political figure from our history.
It works the same way when you realize you can't just walk up to a police officer and demand they pay your speeding ticket; even if they were breaking the speed limit just like you were—while some other officer was busy writing everyone else's citations—it doesn't work that way. And again, this isn't some concept invented specifically for this corner of the internet or this forum.
You can ask a moderator to look into a registration issue, and then that moderator has to take it up with the admin, who ultimately holds the autonomy to decide whether or not to act on it.
It’s like that police example I mentioned: you don't physically tackle the officer or try to arrest them yourself; instead, you report them to Internal Affairs, and they handle the investigation according to their own protocols.
In the meantime, that doesn't grant you any kind of immunity to disregard the rules or ignore official commands.

Is the system fundamentally sound?
Technically, yes. But could it be better?
Oh, absolutely. And who wouldn't want it to be?
There are always areas where things can be patched, improved, or upgraded—that much is obvious to everyone.
However, labeling every single thing as negative or deciding a priori that something is broken simply isn't right, nor is it accurate.
We have bad laws in the real world, and frankly, some pretty stupid ones too, not to mention how poorly many of them are actually enforced, but that doesn't mean tearing down the entire legal and systemic framework would somehow result in a better state of affairs.
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
No, Rachel Sanchez11, we can't all just go out and grab a BBQ every single day
because there’s a massive difference between a backyard cookout and a literal forest fire
you see that exact same gap in the post above yours—take two people speeding through a construction zone at the same rate, but at different times or locations (and feel free to throw some people with stomach flu into that mix for good measure)
I should probably also point out that a whole lot of nonsense happens simply because we love to latch onto one tiny detail and hammer away at it according to our own rules while completely ignoring everything else, along with our actual responsibilities
and then, when the consequences finally catch up to us, it’s nothing but a hundred and one excuses, reasons, crying, whining... "it wasn't me," "I didn't know," "I didn't mean to"...

That’s exactly why the police have their own set of tolerances; if we’re being honest, they actually have the discretion to issue warnings, and sometimes they even let things slide with just a verbal nudge about how to behave better next time.
The reality is, you can certainly feel grateful if they let you walk away, or appreciative if they give you an official warning, but you really haven't got a leg to stand on if they decide to slap you with a fine.
Because, at the end of the day, the fact remains that you broke the law, and since no two situations in life are ever truly identical, there's always room for nuance.
Sure, speeding at 20 mph over the limit on some wide-open stretch of highway is technically a violation, but it’s obviously not the same level of offense as flying through a school zone or a street packed with pedestrians.
This is precisely why officers and judges have a certain amount of leeway in their sentencing, though I think the part most drivers struggle to grasp is that following the rules shouldn't be about dodging a ticket—it should be about avoiding a wreck.
There are people out there who would give anything today to have been pulled over and handed a $167 instead of sitting in a jail cell, carrying the crushing weight of having killed a child on their conscience.
Sadly, most people only realize that once the damage is already done.
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I might just call the cops myself, and then let Ante and Mate try explaining their little logic to them.
That said, I’m perfectly capable of accepting my own penalty for hosting a backyard BBQ, while those two were doing the exact same thing, just following the rules and doing it safely.
The difference there isn't subtle, and it certainly isn't small.
It’s a lot like claiming I have the same right to drive on the road as an ambulance or a fire truck, or like how someone on this forum decides to play games, compared to someone else who consistently acts sub-par and tries to blind everyone by assuming that if they're stubborn enough, they can get away with anything.
By that same logic, I could claim I settled some issues via PM, handled others with a single yellow card, and failed miserably even after a whole string of red ones.
Just imagine if some guy reaches out to me claiming I had no right to ban him, because he should be allowed to spam nine times straight—raking in ninety points—without anyone being able to touch him.
What I’m trying to get at is that sometimes people and situations just spiral into pure absurdity, and there really is no other option left but to remove the person acting as the disruptive element.
Furthermore, speaking from my own experience, the moderators in this country are incredibly lenient.
Unfortunately, there are certain people who mistake that leniency for stupidity, and then they act shocked when they eventually get "cut off."
We all know this doesn't happen this way anywhere else in the world; everywhere else, it’s perfectly obvious that once things go south, the very next thing you see is an access denied message.

Well, since it looks like we’ve all finally exhausted our collective supply of wisdom and have basically devolved into just chatting amongst ourselves, I think it’s about time we wrap this thing up.
On the FBI site, access remains wide open for anyone who actually wants it, and nobody is being forced into anything; it’s entirely up to you whether you want to hang out here or not, just like any other sub-forum on the internet.
Proposal to abolish PDF PŽK in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Rachel Sanchez11, that’s really not the heart of the matter here; honestly, the easiest thing to do is just pack up your gear and decide you're done playing the game altogether
It is incredibly difficult to maintain any sense of perspective and realize, for instance, that no actual damage was done
If a person had been banned, the way they would have been banned on some other subreddit, then maybe we could actually be having this kind of conversation, and everyone would act differently as a group because the consequences of your actions vary wildly depending on the venue
But like this, with all these little power plays involved, the only thing that truly matters is that a person stops dragging up ancient history and pays a bit more attention to how they frame their posts
Just like Richard Perez3 mentioned, the user could have handled things one way or another, and the moderator could have done the same
Both sides had options and choices, and they made theirs
The absolute worst thing that can happen to anyone in an argument is having a mob descend upon them to scream for or against a cause, because naturally, it puts the moderator in a position where every single move they make has to be defended and justified (and you know, as do anyone who has ever participated in various sites out there, that such a thing doesn't exist)
Simply put, a moderator has certain duties and certain rights, and as long as it isn't blatantly obvious that they are dead wrong, they are in the right
It is exactly like how a judge is going to believe a police officer who claims you were speeding, rather than believing your claim that you were driving like a complete lunatic with a fever and a wandering mind
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Maria Thompson2, if you’re actually claiming this forum functions like a community in RL, then I’m genuinely curious—how exactly do you put a stop sign or a cop standing at an intersection on "ignore" in the real world?
Do you just drive right past them and then mutter, "screw you guys, just lock me up already"?
🙂
smart gave a perfectly lovely explanation there, but you’re just stubbornly pushing your own agenda.
And you know why? It's because you're only looking out for yourself; you have no trouble seeing a yellow card as a simple warning, yet you conveniently forget that it's much better for a moderator to issue a public warning when dealing with a whole group of people rather than just handing out ten individual cards like candy.
Of course, if they just handed out the cards, the narrative would immediately shift to how someone is just being punitive and handing out penalties instead of actually trying to warn anyone.
And here we go again—another round of this absolute nonsense.
🙂
And since I owe you an answer to that initial question: the software doesn't allow one mod to give a card to another mod, but that's easily fixed with a quick PM to the admin, provided the mod thinks it's actually the right or necessary thing to do.
Proposal to abolish PDF PŽK in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, people, it seems like we’re all collectively forgetting that warnings are just tools—they're meant to be a heads-up, nothing more. They don't cost anything and they don't actually change the status quo; their entire purpose is simply to serve as a reminder.
Elsewhere, you might get a private message acting as a warning, but you should probably expect that if you don't fix your act, a direct ban is likely what follows next.
Rachel Sanchez11, that little kid you're talking about apparently dug up a six-year-old thread, but somehow missed the main discussion?
Alright, let's say he did.
So what? He hasn't been banned, he hasn't been kicked off Reddit, nothing of the sort—he just got a warning.
You're out here claiming he's some brand-new user.
But what if he isn't? What if he's actually a clone of someone who's been on this site forever and knows the rules inside and out?
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Double standards... even the phrase itself sounds inherently sinister, doesn't it?
🙂
But if you strip away the drama, it’s really just the same category as "collegiality." The only actual difference is whether I decide to act like a mindless robot and punish every single misplaced word, or if I choose to maintain some semblance of human distance—trying to be just a little bit tolerant and acknowledging that people aren't always going to function at a purely mechanical level.
No, heaven forbid, if I don't hand out a penalty card, it’s an absolute outrage and proof of favoritism.
And if I *do* hand out a card, it’s because I’m clearly being too strict, have a head like a brick, am totally intolerant, stupid, and just don't get it...
Again, no matter how you spin it, sooner or later this will somehow be blamed on the liberals or the Republicans or the walls or the Germans or the Arabs or the partisans.
😁
Is it actually possible for a person to exist who isn't caught up in some narrative or partisan faction, someone who relies exclusively on their own sense of integrity and tries to operate in a way that is, at the very least, somewhat objective?
Personally, the whole idea of handing out penalties doesn't appeal to me at all, but I am genuinely wondering: how is it that someone with your eloquence is unable to craft a title and an opening post that makes it crystal clear what we're even talking about?
Is it a provocation? Is it tabloid influence? Is it pure malice?
Didn't we just have a conversation about links via PM recently?
What are you actually trying to achieve here, Maria Thompson2?
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Why me??
My posts are just general observations, totally disconnected from your specific situation—which, by the way, you didn't even bother to mention in the thread title
Besides, that opening post YOU made doesn't actually point to any particular scenario, mood, or theme at all...
If I were to slap a ban on you right now, it would just look like I'm playing favorites with my fellow mod, punishing poor you just because you decided to complain
Meanwhile, while I’m busy responding to the actual topic and the question you posed, you somehow manage to pivot to some hyper-specific situation just to find a way to "congratulate" me
For crying out loud, Maria Thompson2, is that how you act when you go to the doctor? You just sit there in silence for fifteen minutes and then stand up and tell them they don't know the first thing about medicine?????
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Maria Thompson2, when I talk about collegiality, I am definitely not suggesting immunity.
I'll admit I might not have been clear enough, but in my book, that kind of thing carries a weight of maybe 10%.
I don't even extend that kind of leeway to my own coworkers at the office.
Look, I genuinely try to be understanding and helpful, but I also believe a moderator has both the right and the responsibility to report another moderator if they feel someone is acting out of line on their specific sub-forum.
The short version is just sending a direct PM to the admins, but if you ask me, a moderator who sits idly by while watching another mod blatantly break the rules should face the exact same penalty for failing to report it.
Please keep in mind I’m not talking about this specific situation or any other particular instance here.

ps. It looks like the admin agrees with me (since her post came in right before mine).
Moderator bans in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Maria Thompson2, I’m honestly not sure if what you’re suggesting is even technically feasible
from a software standpoint, one moderator can't just hand out a ban to another moderator directly.
However, a mod can certainly report another mod's activity to the admins, and at that point, a ban is almost a statistical certainty.
It is an undeniable truth that moderators get a slightly larger margin for error, mostly due to professional camaraderie and the simple fact that they have to wade through absolute nonsense all day—which, let’s be honest, causes anyone to lose their cool occasionally, because at the end of the day, they are just people, just like the rest of us.
The moderator handling a specific PDF can, in any given situation, demand that the admin issue a ban against another moderator who is causing issues.
