I honestly think what Amy Vaughn12 put together is a much better way to go... especially if you're looking to snag brand-new parts with those longer warranties included.
It sounds like your DVD might be the culprit here—maybe it’s got some scratches or just a bit of surface damage preventing a clean read. You should probably grab a fresh copy of the OS from this link instead; they'll provide it as an ISO file, so you can just burn it onto a blank DVD and you'll be good to go.
Maybe try dropping the in-game resolution a bit... Honestly, until you've got enough cash saved up, just pick up something like an HD 7770—those things are actually pretty solid.
You’re going to need a SATA hard drive for this... since most modern motherboards just don't support those old PATA connectors anymore. They've pretty much become relics of the past—so you'll definitely want to make sure you pick up a SATA drive instead.
So $67 check this out—it’s a used one listed on Craigslist by someone based in Washington, D.C. Since you didn't mention where you're located, I wasn't sure if the drive would be worth it for you, but there's a passive heatsink, which means it runs silent. Plus, it has HDMI ports, which is exactly what you're looking for...
Maybe we’ll see an extra 1 or 2 fps here or there 😁 Or perhaps it’ll just help with getting a better overclock... I guess we'll just have to wait and see 😁
I’m really curious—when we look at the next generation of processors, how much of a leap are we actually going to see compared to what's on the market right now? 😁
Hey, just a heads-up—Nvidia is about to drop their 8xx series desktop cards, so you might want to hold off for a bit. You can probably expect prices on the "older" models to dip once the new stuff hits the shelves...
I made the jump from an i5 750 over to an i5 4670k, and honestly? I can't tell you if I actually noticed a difference in real-world use. Maybe it's a bit faster for gaming by like 5 or 6 fps... or maybe it isn't? I really don't know.
Are you thinking of Skylake? From what I've seen online, it looks like it might drop sometime late in 2015... though honestly, most of what people are saying right now is just pure speculation—you might as well ask God when Intel actually decides to release things. Besides, we have Broadwell coming out at the end of this year, so we really should see how that performs first before jumping into anything else. 😁
It seems like people over on Craigslist are mostly asking for 80% of the retail price when they're trying to offload components... I honestly have no clue if there's some logic behind it or if they just don't understand how selling actually works. But seriously, who is actually going to buy from them?
The GPU is definitely your bottleneck here. I’m not saying you won't be able to launch those games, but don't expect to crank up the settings at high resolutions—you'll end up with a pretty rough frame rate, especially when you're playing Call of Duty: Battlefield... You really want to look for a card that comes with DDR5 memory..
If you toss your OS and all your main programs onto an SSD... man, that computer is going to fly like a Bolt 😁 As for the hard drive, I just use that for downloading torrents and storing my games 😁
