Ruptured eardrum in Health ·
Spent the last few days hanging out at the beach and now the issues are back. My earplug keeps slipping out and leaking. I actually lost one today... where can I find a better selection of earplugs? Any tips on how to figure out which ones actually fit my ear properly?

thanks, Lawrence Wells! 🙂

Bio. As if it’s nothing, as if it’ll just pass on its own, as if I can just avoid the beach whenever the wind picks up and stop drying my ears with a towel. And I have to avoid getting my head wet. At this rate, swimming loses all its point. Might have to go buy some earplugs...

Does anyone actually know anything about ears, or is everyone just out at the beach? 😕 🙂

Found out yesterday that I’ve got an old perforated eardrum. No bleeding or anything, just a tiny hole there.
For the last three weeks, I’ve been dealing with this weird pressure and pain—mostly near that ear, sometimes radiating toward my head. It's usually nothing major, but occasionally it gets pretty unsettling. My hearing seems fine based on some basic DIY tests 🙂.
I hit the pool almost every day (submerging my head, obviously). Honestly, I don't even know when the rupture actually happened; maybe it was three years ago when I noticed some dried blood in that same ear. If that's the case, why hasn't it fully healed yet?
Am I doomed to deal with constant drafts in my ear forever? 😁
Should I take a break from swimming?
Or should I just go see an ENT regardless?
Thanks!

Why is my business partner pushing me to set up an LLC just so they can pay for services? Apparently, it’s more convenient for them than just cutting a check... but setting up a full business structure feels like way too much overhead for a gig that isn't even guaranteed long-term.

And apparently those Polish refs are buddies with the guys from Suva, so we’re getting a free pass today... even though they were way worse than when they called that game against Spain and Norway... 🤷

True that. And another tip of the hat to you, Chief... hope you pull through and get back on your feet soon... 🙏

True, those guys are legends. Our own legends, obviously. 🙂

Larry Martin11 said:...I seriously can't believe this! I literally just wrote about how that same film is totally uncharacteristic for Wes Anderson—I mean, he usually directs these complex, almost "epic" movies (not in a bad way, obviously, but still), whereas this is just a breezy, sweet, "modernly old-fashioned" comedy 😍—but then I deleted the whole post thinking, whatever, it doesn't matter...

...good grief 😵 😍

🙂

First off, thanks for the 😍 , but I wouldn't call it some breezy little comedy. The movie is fantastic, but it’s schizophrenic... that's exactly why I love it. A lot of people went in expecting a Sandler slapstick flick because they don't know the Wes Anderson catalog, so they ended up walking out halfway through the theater.

wanderinghawk17 said:No way. They'll just refinance the movie based on its box office earnings.

If a production burns through $1,000,000 and only pulls in $100,000 at the theaters, the Department chips in another $100,000.
It doesn't matter how much, as long as this "subsidy" is tied to how well the film performs commercially. The ratio is irrelevant...

I don't get it. If it makes $3,000,000? That’s like handing out a free mansion to a billionaire...

Four years since my last entry... 🙂
Watched it again last night. Still haven't checked out the original or read the book.
Stevo directs so damn well that if he had taken Ratkajeve under his wing, he would've made... well, okay. 🙄

The pacing is just right—enough room to process everything without missing a beat. Pure gold!

Man, I really don't have anything profound to say here.

And one last thing. 🙂

Kyle Watson8 said:Good grief 🙄 I sat through about 20 minutes of that movie yesterday and reached a pretty definitive conclusion: the lead actor was nothing more than an immature, obnoxious brat. Honestly, I can't decide if the film itself is just fundamentally moronic, or if you people are all living in a complete delusion. 🙂 Pardon me, astronaut 🙄

Let me put this simply: just because the lead is a "shallow, immature pig" (?!) doesn't mean the movie sucks. Judging an entire film after twenty minutes leads to one conclusion: either you're being dense, or you're totally lost. Yup.

Joseph Lee3 said:Honestly, Downey would be a brilliant pick. I heard they reached out to Kevin Spacey first, but he passed. The whole project has basically been stuck in limbo for years because nobody wanted to touch the lead roles.

I’m not entirely sure if Downey was ever officially on the table, but the guy is fantastic—he has that slightly weathered edge and an uncanny knack for stripping away the artifice of real people. He was absolutely stellar in Attenborough's biopic about Charlie Chaplin. Just incredible.

The part that might actually blow my mind, though, is that Downey is currently prepping for a play on Broadway in New York City about Sellers. Just imagine the sheer amount of material you can pull from one poor soul; the inspiration never seems to run dry. If Sellers were still around to see this, he'd probably die of pure embarrassment. Poor guy... 😢

You're not wrong. Those are my favorite kinds of actors. The ones I hate when I first see them, and then they land a role like 'Chaplin' and just absolutely kill it. Before this movie, he was in 'Gothica'... so, does anyone actually know what his character's point was in that one?

Joseph Lee3 said:Jose Miller17 brought this up ages ago... and honestly, I'm right there with him, wondering if anyone who hasn't heard of the guy will even care. It's a gamble. 😢

sigh

How much weight can we really give the opinion of someone who’s never even heard of Peter Sellers in relation to this movie?

I have to say, I don't see the connection between what I said and your conclusion. Who makes movies and why they make them... that's a whole different conversation...

I try to watch movies without letting outside noise get in my head. But if a film actually grabs me, I end up falling down a rabbit hole reading everything I can find... including those genius forum reviews like, "You're an idiot if you think this movie sucks, because I say it's a masterpiece," because at the end of the day, it all just comes down to who's talking... 😉

Jerry Martin19 said:Critics are totally useless. 🙂

That's nonsense. You can actually learn a lot from them. If someone makes an argument so solid I have to tip my hat, I'm more than willing to rethink my own take on a movie.
Besides, I don't even trust my own memory when it comes to a film if I saw it more than three years ago...
Cognitive Biases in Movies ·
Jerry Martin19, listen, would you actually bother writing about the movies you absolutely love or despise? Would you even want people reading your takes and respecting your opinion? And more importantly, could you pull off being subtle about it? You can only be subtle if you actually know your stuff. To be good, you need arguments you can actually defend—spotting layers in a film that everyone else missed. That’s when a reader feels grateful because you opened their eyes, making them value your reviews and trust your word. Personally, it’s all the same as getting a movie recommendation from a buddy whose taste you actually respect, rather than some guy who just thinks a flick is great because there was a shootout, fast cars, and a hot girl.
