Anyway, just an ad. I watched Full Metal Jacket right after finishing my service, and honestly, it didn't feel too heavy—even though those three months of basic training felt pretty much like some of the scenes during the drill instructor segments. Aside from the suicide part, obviously. It’s true that Kubrick is one of the few directors who actually gives people outside the military a glimpse into that world, but there’s still room for improvement. That guy Kubrick really commands respect. God forbid you cross him... though the war portion of the film was actually kind of tedious and exhausting. I barely even remember it compared to the training scenes.
I have a feeling the second half of the movie is better executed, though it's been ages since I last saw it...

The movie is bad because the plot is too simple, which ruins the pacing...

Just another 👍

I didn't say it was bad, just that it's slow. Then again, I haven't watched it in a while, so maybe my opinion would've changed. Unfortunately, I didn't catch it this time even though I wanted to, just so I could throw more pearls before swine. 👍

Not sure if you've seen it yet, but honestly, don't get your hopes up. The movie is a slow burn. I can't stand slow movies unless there's actually a good reason for them, but here... the plot is just too thin.

Why all the hate and negativity thrown at people? Maybe they just can't scrape together enough seed money for the business they actually want. Or maybe everything they're capable of doing is just low-margin garbage.
I mean, who actually *enjoys* grinding for someone else? It’s just the path of least resistance. Living life on autopilot. You get that first paycheck and feel fancy, land a steady gig, start eyeing a new Ford, then kids show up, debt piles up, and suddenly you're staring down middle age. By the time you realize you want more, you're too terrified to risk anything for your family because you're nearing 60 and Social Security from $667 is nowhere in sight. Just a lifetime of stress-induced health issues and being broke. I lost my train of thought somewhere there...
Watched it last night. 'Leviathan' is just pretentious garbage. Ivica is a total legend though! 🙏 That chunky British one was solid, and this German piece? Way ahead of the curve. I actually died laughing at the butterfly in that digital English version.

It's Herzog's documentary about Timothy Treadwell, who died back in 2003 on Kodiak Island, Alaska, while documenting grizzly man life.

The film uses footage Treadwell shot himself out in the Alaskan wilderness, mixed with occasional commentary from the director and interviews with people who knew him or understood how things went down.
It’s a weird mix of raw emotion, logic, spontaneous artistry, and the total indifference of Nature versus the sheer grind of survival.

Is it actually a story about bears, or about people?

Despite all the spectacular bear fights and stunning nature shots, the movie isn't really hunting for what Herzog calls the "secret life of bears." Instead, it plays out like a drama without actors, where real people just live out their roles.
And the bears just do their thing...

Herzog spends his time dissecting Treadwell’s motives and his internal struggles.
Any empathy you feel for the lead comes from understanding him—which means understanding society as a whole. He was basically an outsider standing against the tide, ripped from his roots and unable to fit into any system based on what Herzog calls the "common denominator" of everything...

👍

I felt bad about how he died. Not sure if I actually felt for Treadwell personally regarding his struggle, but honestly, it doesn't matter. Everyone can decide that for themselves. The filmmaker leaves the judgment up to us, presenting the full spectrum of opinions on him. Even though Treadwell did most of the heavy lifting... including providing a "perfect" ending that a director of Herzog's caliber wouldn't dare show the audience. Maybe it's better that way.
The guy was cinematic, hilarious, and totally insane. I love the part with the bee: "Little bee is dead... She was my friend... Oh my god! She is moving! She is alive!" 🤣

Jack...🙂 🤣
Just wanted to point out that box office numbers don't actually mean a movie is any good. Even looking back from the 90s to now, there are plenty of films I dig way more than those massive blockbusters like... whatever they were. I haven't seen Guard Squad yet.
bluecobra9 said:Oh, great, here comes the provocation again... calling it advertising, is it?

I'm not so sure. Advertising matters, sure, but you only need it if you actually have a product to show off and want people to go watch it. On the flip side, if the product is free, then this whole logic falls apart. That’s not an ad; it’s just a giveaway.

And look, American cinema is finally getting smarter and more interesting—we really shouldn't be trashing it anymore, at least not until this theory hits us in the face. We should wait to see how the next three or four films turn out before we draw any conclusions. For now, things are looking up. Seriously? Two domestic films are the biggest hits of the year? Come on! That's exactly what we've been begging for all decade . As for amateur filmmaking, it'll only make sense once there's a clear line drawn between professional work and that stuff. Right now, it's just a hobby, and let's treat it as such—especially in the case of this ambitious author's text.

Anyway, we could argue about this forever.

I remember back when the old regime was winding down, the biggest hit in theaters was 'Let's Fall in Love, Part Two'.
Finally, an answer! 👍

I’m all for the kid. You’ve gotta be creative. Maybe some people outside his tiny circle of friends will actually notice him, but who cares? As long as he’s happy. My buddies and I shot this spontaneous documentary 🙂. Still needs an edit... then there are the festivals, and all the idiots who flock to them...

plus, you have to pray you find someone whose organs actually match the recipient. Which, obviously, requires a crystal ball.

Honestly, why do people even bother going to medical school? It’s so much easier to just grab your local butcher and call it a day.👍

If it's that easy, why on earth do we only have three or four transplant centers in the entire country? Why isn't this happening on every street corner?

Now you guys are seriously talking nonsense. ☕ Actually, there are some PARANOID people in here.

Well, those few transplant centers actually matter when it comes to organ donation. I guess it's way simpler to harvest from a corpse, but hey, what do I know? I'm just a layman...
And yeah, I am paranoid. I don't want to be in a situation where my life is hanging by a thread and doctors decide to cut that thread just because I didn't sign a paper saying "no" to donation—all so they can give my parts to someone else even though I could have survived.
Look, I'm not against organ donation, but surgeons shouldn't have any clue what's happening with my organs while they're operating on me.
Maybe we need a system where someone's wishes regarding their organs are unlocked immediately after death. Like some kind of secure database that only becomes accessible once a person has passed away.
