eXistenZ (by David Cronenberg) in Movies ·
Robert Cooper41 said:) ... and I don't even want to know how women feel watching "Dead Ringers" 😱

Is that the one with Jeremy Irons playing those gynecologist twins? I haven't slept well in days. And honestly, I can't even think about visiting my gynecologist without remembering those medical tools—it’s been maybe ten years now. Baaaaaaaaaa 😱

Personally, I wasn't huge on eXistenZ, mostly because it felt like something was missing from the movie. But it was interesting, I guess, just like all of Cronenberg's work. The only scene I found totally revolting was that licking thing at the bottom of the back, plus the whole... well, you know. But the organic gamepad? That's a brilliant idea. And that factory sequence felt like a genius little game, especially with the bone gun 👍
I mean, I think Cronenberg is terrifying specifically because his stuff feels possible.

And yeah, Naked Lunch is probably one of the best book adaptations out there, since it's just as witty as it is gross 😁

😲 😲 😁 visualized it; I won't even mention how much that 'h' at the start of the curse word hit me 😁 I guess it was worth the struggle with this message after all...
Betty Bennett10 said:And I really loved the mention of Arsen Dedić—he doesn't actually have much of a voice, he just sort of "blows warm air" (that's my husband's favorite way to put it).

A few months back, I caught him singing and realized he was finally sounding great. 🙂
As for the whole thing about "unintelligent people" being able to sing (or paint, or take photos, or act...), I don't think it's impossible for them to be good. Sometimes an unintelligent person just has this specific personality trait that draws people in and helps them connect. Maybe the only difference is that a smart person will recognize that trait and lean into it, whereas someone less bright might miss it entirely. Or maybe some slick manager will spot it first.
I don't know much about Natalie Portman, honestly. I don't watch much TV and I've only heard her mentioned a couple of times. In America, there are plenty of people with similar vocal abilities, and probably even better singers out there. But, I guess a voice isn't everything when it comes to being a great singer, because performing on stage is about so much more than just the vocals.

Alright, I've got news 👋 tickets hit the stands on March 30th, and they should reach New York City around then too. The price looks pretty reasonable at about $60 👍
.
Anyway, since interest is massive, I’d suggest moving fast 😁 😁 😁

🙂 , but I don't actually have the recording.
Honestly, the Pixies never quite clicked for me. Now, I guess I get a bit emotional when I hear them, but back then, they just felt a little too "girly" compared to someone like Kim Deal. 😁 😁 😁

So, were you actually there? 😁 😁 😎

She was incredible in Fear and Loathing, and honestly, she’s an absolute queen in Buffalo 66 👍

Man, I actually went to see Musk at the Cinema while running a 102-degree fever. I was basically screaming through the whole thing—laughing one second and then totally losing it during the drama. Blood, blood, blood... 😁 😁 😁

Look, it’s not exactly a masterpiece. But man, it is looooovely 😁 And let’s not forget: A pretty girl is like... a pretty giiiiiiiiiiiirl / It's like I'm on the moon / I can't really breed but I feel lighteeeer

😁 😁 😁

I guess it’s just really cool seeing that little witch playing a little wiiiiiitch again 😳
Solaris (A.T.) in Movies ·
I watched it without subtitles, and since I haven't studied Russian since elementary school, it was a massive struggle. Then I checked out the remake, which actually wasn't bad at all (surprise, surprise), so I went back to Tarkovsky. By the end, I finally realized just how incredibly good the film is 👍

The first thing that jumps out at me visually—thinking back to those old commercials—is probably the 🙏alien

Tyler Grant76 said:I haven't actually sat down to watch "Barnes & Noble," and honestly, neither have I seen "the child from Macon." But man, "The Chef, His Wife, and the Thief" is just incredible. 🙏 I can still picture that scene in the restaurant where the light turns red, then "the wife" shows up in this red dress, and then there's the bathroom scene with the white dress. It’s those little details... the colors, the reds, the greens, the worms, even that dark library setting...
And "death by numbers"... yeah, that was great.

😕 Isn't it actually "The Chef, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover"?

Also, after the red and white dresses, there's actually a green one in the kitchen too. 🙂 Beautiful 👍

Jason Morgan2 said:Don't you think this could happen in any culture? I mean, given the right historical or social context, sure. Personally, I think it can happen, it has happened, and it’ll probably happen again.

🙂 Look, I find Japanese culture fascinating because, in many ways, I feel like they're actually anticipating what future advanced societies might look like. Their radical approach to daily life and their level of consumerism... it seems like a logical next step for Western cultures, I guess.
On the flip side, their value system is truly unique. You can see this deep-seated traditionalism even in their modern language, and it's really the root of this whole topic. The Japanese people appreciate life, but they don't view death as something inherently bad. Why do they celebrate cherry blossoms? Because they die at the peak of their beauty. 🙂 Zen, as an intellectual concept, relies entirely on that specific moment. Thinking about death, or being afraid of it, just doesn't fit into the concept.
Anyway, I love Japan. 😍

This is definitely one of those movies you want to see on the big screen😉

Benjamin Thompson96 said:It’s not really a cartoon (it uses stop-motion, puppets, and all that...)
but, personally, I think Nightmare Before Christmas is just fantastic...

Based on how Burton's team handled it... he was also a producer... and Danny Elfman did the score... which is incredible too... if you haven't seen it, you really should! 🙂

👍

+I love watching Ghost in the Shell, but man, the English dubbing is driving me crazy.
Music critics?! in Music ·
I don't take music reviews—or pretty much any other kind of criticism—too seriously. I don't let them dictate my tastes. That said, criticism is its own literary art form, and some critics are actually a joy to read, even if I find myself disagreeing with their takes 🙂
