Why is it such a massive struggle—aside from what rowdybadger41 mentioned about everyone having their own mental version of a book that a director just can't quite "hit"—to actually make a good movie adaptation?
But, uh, getting a little more serious here... it's probably because every piece of literature already has its own pulse and rhythm, living its own life, regardless of how long it's been out there or how successful it was...

I started scrolling back through this thread from the very beginning and stumbled right onto this gem. To be totally honest, I’m feeling way too lazy to dig through my mental archives right now, and since the title mentioned above (which I personally know as 'Fistful of Dynamite') is pretty much my favorite Leone flick—and honestly still holds up today—I decided to do a little bit of quoting/plagiarism of the post above (my humble apologies).
For one thing, it's tough to think of a movie where a random duo (in this case, Steiger and Coburn) works quite this well... and I don't just mean they complement each other, but that they both command the screen with equal intensity. You've got every close-up of Coburn with that unshakable, stoic expression, contrasted against every shot where Steiger opens his mouth just to spit pure verbal venom.
To make a long story short, ® still rocks!

So, I was thinking about Allan Quatermain and his trek toward El Dorado... just one of those movies that sticks in the back of your mind, you know? It’s got that specific kind of adventure energy that feels almost nostalgic now. Not that it was perfect, obviously, but there's something about that whole vibe... anyway, where was I... right, the quest for the treasure. It’s a classic setup, really. Just a guy, a dream, and a whole lot of trouble waiting around the corner... Man, that scene where Oded Fehr—aka Ardeth—is rocking that face paint while the Medjays are setting up their battle line... just iconic...
Honestly, the best part of the whole movie has to be Anubis's army... that way they move is just spot on. The rendering is incredible—especially how they stretched out those limbs, particularly those elongated shins. It looks so good... I can't believe we're actually doing this again... 🙂 🙂

Lotte Reiniger—if I can even count silhouette films in a poll about female directors, though I'm not entirely sure... To be honest, I stumbled across an article about her years ago, more by accident than anything, and I’ve always wanted to sit down and actually dive into her entire body of work instead of just catching a few random animations here and there. But honestly, Lotte is such an icon to me... I mean, if she was able to craft those gorgeous little masterpieces and keep editing them well into her later years, surely there’s enough time for me to finally sit down and tackle them all...

Julie Taymor... man, she just gets it. There’s something about her vision that stays with you long after the credits roll. It’s hard to pin down exactly why, but she has this way of weaving these incredibly intricate, almost dreamlike layers into everything she touches... it's just different. Titus;
Kathryn Bigelow... because... Strange Day... There were two or three really killer moments in... The Weight of Water... I can't quite recall the translation...
Angela Pop... just making movies for the paycheck, I guess. Captives (I honestly don't even know the translation... I'm assuming it's Captives?)
There's still plenty of time for those rising stars to prove themselves... at least, that’s what I’m telling myself so I don't go betting all my chips on them before they've actually delivered...

A young Petersen, that long-winded Noonan and Morgan Freeman, plus that whole Mann aesthetic—that iconic 80s vibe mixed with those moments where it feels like a total low-budget grind— Me likes it, me likes it very much!
To be fair, though, Hopkins is just more vibrant and unsettling than Morgan Freeman. Then again, if I remember correctly, Morgan Freeman only gets a handful of scenes in Manhunter, and he plays such an incredibly cold, calculating Hannibal.
So yeah... mostly just being sentimental here, maybe trying to give Morgan Freeman's score a little boost...

I’m a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki. Not that I’m judging anyone else, but unlike some people, I don’t strictly avoid Disney... so it’s always a nice change of pace when a character like Howl brings me back to what matters. If we’re really getting into comparisons, though, I think little Chihiro hits a bit harder for me. There’s just something about her story that cuts straight through to the heart—though, if I’m being honest, she still might not quite top the moving castle...
So, what's the actual argument here? I mean, 😁 was basically just a kid back in the day, maybe seven or eight... What if we just met halfway? Let’s say we decide '82 was the absolute cutoff for that whole era of the super-sweet little Drew we all knew, and everything after that is fair game for criticism—based on, you know, our own personal take on things...
