Dealing with the teenage years is a nightmare in Students & Teens ·
northerncobra27 said:But what I'm actually getting at isn't about genetics—it's more about the way we instill family values and other core principles. I try to teach my kids that it's just not okay to be disrespectful or lash out at people (and when I say "lash out," I'm talking about all sorts of bad behavior, not just swearing), especially when it comes to family members.

It's easy enough to keep kids in line through fear, at least for a little while. But once they break free from that control, that's usually when the real trouble starts.

I've never grown up in a household like that, so I'm genuinely curious—how does that dynamic even work in the long run? Do you live with the constant worry that your child might one day turn that aggression back on you? When does that cycle finally end? And what happens if things just fall apart after they stop being afraid? My oldest son is already physically stronger than I am, and he hasn't even reached adulthood yet. Sure, since he's a boy, maybe that rebellious phase won't last quite as long—assuming you're planning on letting them roam the streets right as they hit eighteen—but what happens in that window where they are strong enough to fight back but aren't legally adults yet? Do you morally feel you have more of a right to strike a child than they have to strike back at you? You might take this as me being provocative, but I promise that isn't my intention; I am truly just trying to understand🤷...

I think you're being a bit too extreme regarding the physical discipline part; I certainly wouldn't allow them to fight while I'm around, but tell me, how would you handle it if your kids started brawling right in front of you? I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on this because I feel like kids today are given way too much leeway, which is exactly what most teachers in our local school district say when they come to us parents asking for help—they basically admit they're powerless and ask us for ways to calm the kids down or motivate them to study. As for that lady and her husband, if I ever treated my wife like that or consistently took the children's side over hers, she probably wouldn't be around to see me anymore, so you're right that she should have dealt with that situation a long time ago.

Does anyone know how I can get my Pictures folders to actually show thumbnail previews instead of just a bunch of identical icons? I really miss how it used to look back in the Windows XP days... right now, everything just looks exactly the same

And if it does happen, I think I'm on the same page as you—trying to reason with them won't do much good. But then again, neither will a slap. Because if my teenager actually starts hurling insults at me, it’s a sign that I really missed the mark somewhere long before puberty even hit.

I see your point, but it doesn't necessarily mean you failed as a parent; sometimes it's just down to nature, as Tom Landry used to say, it's all in the genes...

It isn't like you're going to sit there and try to calmly explain to him that his language is unacceptable when he's hurling insults at you... that’s exactly how we ended up in this mess in the first place.

You really need a firmer hand in the house, because whenever my boys start acting up like that, I step right into the middle of the fray and break them up just to remind them who’s actually in charge... I’ve already made it crystal clear to them that once they graduate high school, if they plan on continuing this nonsense, they can find somewhere else to live. My wife struggles to keep them in line too, and honestly, even you seem to have a hard time since all your nagging doesn't seem to stick, and I truly don't know what happened to kids these days, though I suspect it all stems from this overly permissive, liberal attitude we see in our schools and throughout society at large. Back in my day, things were different; if you messed up, a teacher or a parent would give you a sharp slap to set you straight, and everyone knew their place... I suppose I can be a bit too soft sometimes, letting them push the boundaries until they eventually walk all over me, which leads to a massive blowout, followed by a period of good behavior before the whole cycle starts all over again, and sometimes I just sit back and wonder why I even bother going through all this trouble...

And isn't it possible that your little one might be part of the reason for the divorce? I mean, did his behavior actually start when things began to cool down between you and your husband? It’s not entirely clear to me how someone decides to divorce just because a man won't go out much, especially since boys tend to be incredibly sensitive to their parents splitting up, and more often than not, they end up blaming their mother...
Importing from China in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
It feels like everything is turning into absolute junk lately. I find myself constantly double-checking everything before I pull the trigger on a purchase just to make sure I'm not accidentally buying some low-quality stuff from China, because at this rate, that's going to be the norm everywhere... honestly, I'd much rather pay twice as much for something reliable than deal with cheap crap that breaks in a week. It’s better to spend more upfront if it means the product actually lasts five times longer...

Technically, you can drift about 10 percent past your approved overdraft limit, but you really need to settle things up by the 15th of the month to make sure you're back within your authorized bounds—for instance, if you're sitting at a deficit of $3.25, you might find yourself reaching $3.75.
Student-teacher dynamics vs. parent-teacher dynamics in Students & Teens ·
casualfalcon49 said:Honestly, it’s freaking hilarious to hear people claim that teachers can't do anything with kids anymore. Like, hello!!!
There are plenty of ways to settle things down with both the kid and the parent, and thank God those methods don't involve getting physical.
Sure, there’s a tiny percentage of kids that are just impossible, but let’s be real—those kids existed back then too, and nobody could handle them back then either.
It feels to me like some teachers who just don't want to put in the effort or deal with the hassle are hiding behind that excuse, and honestly, they kind of deserve it.
I’ve been working in education for 17 years and I’ve never had an issue with students or parents, but that’s because I always step in immediately. I come home absolutely drained from all the talking and disciplining, but I know why, and I take pride in that. Then I'll have a colleague working in the same building tell me, "Man, you're lucky, you always get the perfect generation," 🙂and seriously, I feel like shooting them.

There really is some truth to that, though; for instance, I have one student who enters my classroom and happens to be in the best-behaved class in the entire school, while the teacher for another class is living in absolute misery, even though that other group isn't exactly a model of good behavior because they have quite a few problematic kids, and it's just a simple reality that if you have five or six troublemakers, they can easily drag the whole class down with them...

Charles Murphy6 said:I’m not going to dwell on the past—what’s done is done—but let me be perfectly clear: teachers simply need to understand that such behavior is strictly forbidden.
My husband and I would never resort to physical confrontation with those kinds of educators, but believe me, there are plenty of other ways to make someone pay.
Perhaps I’m in a slightly more advantageous position because, given my profession and how hard I work, I know exactly where to strike to make it hurt... though I certainly don't mean physically.

Please, enlighten those of us who aren't in the loop, because from everything I see and observe, kids haven't been more difficult than they are right now, and back in our day, none of us would have dreamed of disrespecting a teacher because we knew exactly what the consequences were... but today, teachers have lost almost all their authority, and if this trend of extreme liberalism and hyper-focus on "student rights" continues, we're going to see kids physically attacking them as early as elementary school. Honestly, when the kids come home from school, they act like little savages because they’ve been allowed to do whatever they want there; now, my own children don't cause trouble at school, but plenty of others do, and my kids witness it and talk about it at home, leaving me wondering how on earth I’m supposed to explain to them that such behavior is unacceptable when the school just sits there and tolerates it...

Picking up OTC meds without a prescription in Health ·
Honestly, this whole thing feels completely pointless... first of all, pharmacies don't just sell narcotics; they dispense medication, which means actual narcotics exist on the black market anyway, so if someone has already paid for their prescription, they should be able to choose what they want without interference—this really just feels like another unnecessary strike against individual liberty. I mean, who actually cares if someone decides to end it all by popping two boxes of pills? If they’re truly determined to go that route, they’ll just jump off a bridge or step in front of a train... as far as I'm concerned, this entire crackdown on private prescriptions is nothing more than total nonsense.

Agritourism in Travel ·
Getting our hands on this money from the European Union is going to be an uphill battle because they require us to match every cent with our own funds, and frankly, we don't have the capital unless we put our very homes on the line... On top of that, they demand perfectly organized paperwork and all sorts of permits, which, let’s be honest, is nothing short of a pipe dream in this country. You hear people down by the coast complaining that tourism isn't paying out enough, yet here we are being told to develop rural areas, but if you ask me, I don't see that ever actually happening...
Agritourism in Travel ·
There just isn't any real interest from guests when it comes to agritourism, so it’s impossible to make it a primary business... because of that, it’s mostly just retirees getting involved, and I know quite a few of them who are basically just collecting massive government grants. I actually submitted a project to the Ministry of Grants myself, hoping to get some support, but they turned me down flat; meanwhile, those same funds are being handed out to those retirees simply because they belong to certain political circles, whereas I don't hold any party affiliation at all. So, we are stuck facing two major hurdles: everyone is heading straight to the coast instead, and the subsidies are essentially being used as rewards for party loyalists to keep them in line... how on earth are we supposed to move forward from here?

I’ve been sitting here thinking about everything we discussed earlier, and I find myself drifting back to that one specific point regarding how much things have shifted since the last time we all gathered to talk about this... It really makes you wonder if we ever truly grasp the scale of the changes happening right under our noses, especially when you consider how much momentum we've lost in certain sectors while others seem to be accelerating at a pace that feels almost impossible to keep up with... I was reading through some old threads, and it struck me how differently we viewed these issues just a few years ago, back when the landscape felt so much more predictable and stable... But now, everything feels like it's in constant flux, and honestly, it's a little overwhelming to try and map out where we're actually headed... I suppose there's no easy answer, and maybe we aren't even looking for one, but I can't help but feel that we are standing on the precipice of something much larger than any of us initially anticipated... Sam Murphy says:
Well, clearly that isn't how things work here in America... 😍
I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about how much our digital lives have changed, especially when you look at how we interact with technology on a daily basis... It feels like there was once this sense of genuine connection and simplicity, but now everything is just so fragmented and overwhelming. I was reading some discussions online recently, and it really struck me how much we rely on these massive corporations to dictate our reality, whether it's through social media algorithms or the devices sitting right in our pockets. It’s funny, because I remember back in the day, things felt more intentional. You didn't just scroll mindlessly for hours; you actually engaged with what was in front of you. Now, it seems like we're constantly chasing the next notification or the next trending topic, almost as if we've lost the ability to just sit still with our own thoughts. I find myself wondering if we're actually becoming more connected, or if we're just building these elaborate digital walls around ourselves that make us feel lonelier than ever before... And then there’s the hardware side of things. We get so caught up in the specs—the processing power, the camera quality, the sheer speed of an Apple device—that we sometimes forget that these tools are supposed to serve us, not the other way around. We become slaves to the upgrade cycle, always feeling like we're one version behind, even when the current tech is more than enough for anything we could possibly need. It’s this strange, collective anxiety that keeps us clicking and buying, and I can't help but feel a bit weary of the whole cycle... I saw a comment from Sam Murphy the other day that touched on something similar, regarding how our attention spans are being systematically dismantled by design, and honestly, I think they hit the nail on the head. It isn't an accident; it's a feature. The entire ecosystem is built to keep us engaged, to keep us consuming, and to keep us looking at the screen instead of looking at each other. It makes me wonder where we go from here, and if we'll ever find a way to reclaim that sense of presence that seems to be slipping through our fingers every single day...

The unit I picked up is actually performing beautifully; there isn't a single dead pixel to be found, and I even ran a quick diagnostic using an Apple test just to be absolutely certain...😁
