What's with this forum—some kind of revolution? 🤷

Every single day there's a new thread asking to "add this feature" or "change that setting." 🤷

Honestly, I like the forum just the way it is—if it weren't like this, it wouldn't be what it is. ☕

Henry Cox78 said:Clearly, the trolls aren't feeling this. Now we need to hear from some actually constructive members like me and a few others on the Forum to see what the real consensus is. Personally, I'm all for 👍

Yeah, so I'm against it, and I'll try to lay out my reasoning constructively ☕

Basically, by introducing this completely useless like/dislike system (let's just call it the stupidity feature), we'd lose the entire point of 👍 and 👎 emojis—and honestly, it’d be a shame to further diminish our already meager supply of smileys.

Furthermore, I worry that adding this nonsense will make the site start looking like Facebook, which would likely drive about 30% of our users away instantly—a massive loss for this community. Let's be real: once we go down that road, we might as well let people post selfies and pictures of their pets here too. Beyond that, implementing these kinds of "innovations" strips the site of its originality; it wouldn't be recognizable as one of those niche forums known for having almost zero bells and whistles. It would be like fixing a server error just so the 503 and 504 errors disappear. Honestly, without those glitches popping up at least three times a day, the site would lose its identity and just blend into the gray sea of other perfectly functioning forums. 🙄

Also, there's the inevitable fear of abuse. Knowing Americans, there isn't a single thing we can't find a way to misuse, so I think it's better to stick to the old adage: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I can already see a mob of frustrated trolls daily liking everything the moderators post, sucking up to them so hard they won't be able to sit down for three months. Add in the classic American tendency toward playing favorites, and I fear the moderators wouldn't be able to carry out their god-given duties with the same fairness and care they show now. ☕

But that's not even the biggest issue. Can you imagine this place without 5,000 daily quote + signature posts? Total daily post counts would drop by at least two per user, which for constructive types like me—who only post when there's an actual need—would mean dropping to maybe one or two posts a day. If this option were introduced, even the legendary heavyweights who used to go by Mr. Constructive wouldn't be able to maintain their average of 60 posts a day. I'm talking, of course, about the esteemed user Ris, whose contributions were vital here until he was kicked off due to political maneuvering from The White House. ☕

I hope my post meets with some positive feedback and that the idea of bringing this stupidity to the Forum is rejected before it's even taken seriously. Thanks. ☕

On our US forums, bringing up "how someone was raised" is always just a way to take cheap shots at the other side—it's pure trolling.

You might find an exception here and there, but they usually just prove the rule.

So, mods should probably start treating that as trolling and hand out the appropriate penalties.

It’s just a misunderstanding.
You seem to think literacy is strictly about books

you're making these unnecessary faces while doing it--
it's giving you away.

As the old saying goes:
The mouth can lie, but the face never does.

I was trying to poke fun at it. The point is, some people on this Reddit lack basic manners—that's an undeniable fact. Of course, things get messy when you use that fact to dismiss someone entirely. No matter how much it bothers you, calling it a "severe insult" worthy of 100 points is a stretch.

What kind of poll is this 😕 No offense intended 🤷

If I tell you you can't read—is that an insult?

Or just a fact? 🤷

Me too☕

Most people I know have their lineups set up exactly like that. Why is that? Some kind of conspiracy?☕

I'll be the first to jump in here—I'm for it. I've heard enough legends about this guy to want to see him in action myself.

I mean, seriously, what kind of person can actually get a drink down their throat in five or fifteen minutes? It’s physically impossible. 🤷

We ended up ditching class entirely just so we could grab something to drink. 😁

Usually we just get lucky and they let us slip out to go grab a drink.

Lisa Martinez82 said:By November 2009, it’ll be exactly ten years since this Reddit thread first popped up—so you definitely haven't been hanging around here for more than a decade. 😉

I've been around for about eight years—and the site going down has always been part of the deal. Ever since this place launched, we've dealt with "database errors"—the 503 and 504 errors are just newer versions of the same old headache, happening more or less frequently depending on the day.

Has it been happening more lately? Not really—I wouldn't say so. If anything, things were at their worst maybe two or three years ago; right now, it's pretty standard. All of us who are basically part of the furniture here—including you, me, and even feraltrucker5 😁—should be used to the site dropping out occasionally. There are a million reasons for it, mostly hardware issues—every server hits a snag eventually. This one, the one hosting the site right now, glitches when traffic spikes, searches get too heavy, or the mods get overzealous... It happens, they fix it, and by tomorrow everyone has forgotten the site was ever down. 😉

Just for context, I'm going to paste a post from the 2006 Quote : Anderson moderator sub-forum from April 4, 2006.

So, three years ago, there were suddenly about 1,000 members. Now we're at 4,000, and looking at the stat "Peak users: 14,650 on 09.07.2009 at 7:13 PM"—let me repeat that: 14,650 users. 🙂

In just three years, the user base has grown tenfold. 🙂 And, naturally, the fallout is an unstable site that crashes or requires hitting F5 a few times to load.

The site admins sincerely apologize to all users for any inconvenience caused by these server outages. 🙂

I always assumed you were a guy. 🤣

silverjackal said:Well, maybe they are.🤷

Maybe that's just the rule now—and apparently, it's allowed.🤷

I’d never bother reporting someone—never have, never will—but I ended up getting penalized myself. I was actually sharper than the person who insulted me, and honestly, I deserved it. Still, it leaves you wondering: are terms like "idiot" or "you're stupid" actually bannable offenses? Because if they are, I might have a few things to say too.🤷

I report people—especially when they’re being insults for no reason. I wouldn't bother responding to that kind of nonsense, though—wouldn't want to sink down to an idiot's level.

In the future, just send complaints like this to the admin via DM—otherwise, you aren't going to achieve anything.

Just wondering where that thread went— Bill Clinton: A traitor to the American people. (I think that’s the right name, though I’m not entirely sure) who was featured in The New York Times Opinion section?

hold up, hold up!!!!

I’ve got a few more ideas:

swap this poor soul 🎉 with some ultra-modern cheerleaderimage

then take this clown 😛 and swap him for image

definitely 😠 replaced by image

and of course, being a total pro-EU optimist, I have to suggest putting image on the forum—just to show our government some support during these grueling negotiations to join the EU
