Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·

I don't get what part of this is confusing,

The screenshot looks like garbage, but you'll see it actually runs on 1GB of RAM. I'd give it a 3.7 out of 10.

Jonathan Sanders said:Two gigs of RAM is way too little. Just check what's eating up most of your memory.

man, I seriously hate it when someone pops up out of nowhere just to bark about how 2GB of RAM isn't enough for a week

you clearly have no clue what you're talking about

Natalie, just go ahead and install Windows 7. It’ll run perfectly fine, trust me. 🙂

It's gotta work 😁

granitegull51 said:Look, I’m no IT pro, but just like 90% of regular users out there, I actually care about speed and how much junk a system eats up.

That’s why I’m comparing a Volkswagen Golf to a newer Volkswagen Golf. Most people just need to get from point A to point B. The newer one does it with more class, sure, but it’s heavier, burns more gas, and the parts cost way more which doesn't exactly make it any more efficient than the older model, right? 🙂

I’m not some tech genius either. For real, I finished training to be an HVAC and plumbing installer—which has zero to do with computers—but I’m still interested in tech and I'm always picking up new stuff. Still, I'm smart enough to figure out which OS works best for me and most other people.

And regarding speed and resources? I already gave you my specs (compared to what's out now, mine is absolute garbage), and my rig has been running for a whole week without a single hiccup or slowdown. So, maybe do your own testing before you start typing about how Windows 7 sucks and Windows XP is better.

Hahahaha... man, what can I even say about that car comparison? If I say what I'm thinking, Benjamin King2 is gonna ban me, so I'll just keep my mouth shut.
Anyway, I'm done commenting on you, but you really can't claim a whole week of use means a system is bad.

@granitegull51/">@@granitegull51: No offense, but you clearly don't have a clue about IT or computers in general. There's a massive difference between actually learning something and just parroting nonsense you read online. Theory is one thing, but real-world practice? That's another story entirely. Your obsession with mid-range graphics has absolutely zero bearing on how the actual OS performs.

It’s like trying to argue that a Volkswagen Golf is better than a newer Volkswagen Golf just because the parts are cheaper and it sips less gas. It makes no sense.

If I wanted to prove you're talking out of your hat—and trust me, I've read enough trash on this forum, including my own amateur mistakes when I first signed up—your "insights" are easily the most ridiculous things I've seen yet.
My main rig:
Intel: AMD Athlon 2.2GHz
Intel: 1GB DDR2 dual channel 667
HDD: WD 250GB
Graphics: Radeon 512MB DDR2, HD
I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit on this machine for over two years. I also have Linux Mint installed on the same setup.
Even with a measly 1GB of Intel, Windows 7 runs like a dream; it practically flies. I've probably mentioned that ten times in this thread already, but I'll keep saying it every time someone like you shows up and starts preaching about how slow things get with only 2GB.

I've got eight other machines at work, some running Windows XP and others on Windows 7.
Some of those XP machines actually have much beefier specs than my current build, but not a single one of them runs as smoothly as Windows 7, regardless of the hardware.
The only thing I'd say is better than Windows 7 as an OS is Linux Mint, but that's a whole different conversation and has nothing to do with XP.

As for Aero... you're honestly the first person I've ever heard claim it's useless or unnecessary. Usually, people tell you it's the perfect option for beginners.

Look, why am I even wasting my breath writing all this? You're making me look bad by comparison. Just run multiple operating systems side-by-side and see for yourself. Windows 7 is hands down the best Windows ever made.🙂

Taylor Morales31 and Jonathan Morris40 already told you this isn't your lane. You've got Windows XP, so just enjoy it. Stop overthinking everything and actually go study how these OSs behave—I don't need some stupid chart to convince me what works and what doesn't.
Brian Sullivan2 said:Can someone just knock out these three problems for me? And seriously, tell me exactly where to click, step by step. Thanks.
http://www.highschool-portal.edu/s...aniela_usmiani 🙂 🙂 🙂Just pick Computer Science Grade 10 on there and you'll see the three tasks.

If anyone feels like sending me $500, go for it. I’m definitely not paying you back.😁

granitegull51 said:Sure. Only problem is it's running on my rig with 3200+ speed and 2GB of RAM.

But look, here's the deal:

-7 eats up way more RAM
-7 isn't any faster—honestly, it feels slower (even after you strip out all those flashy graphics junk)
-7 takes longer to boot than XP (so much for the hype)
-7 isn't any more stable than XP; it's basically the same mess
-7 looks cluttered and is just a headache to navigate
-7 plays nice with almost zero programs🙂

I mean, seriously, I can't find a single upside besides the RENAME function that doesn't mess with the file extension...🤷☕

you're tripping 🙂🙂
The only thing you got right was the bold part, but nah, it definitely uses more RAM.

Zachary Stewart2 said:Alright. Just wondering though, where did you get ASUS from? My motherboard is a Gigabyte, at least according to what I checked. That’s why I couldn't find anything for my setup on that ASUS link you posted.

This is my board: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/com...ents&os=64-bit Will it work?

Guess I misread something and thought it was an ASUS board 🙂

Zachary Stewart2 said:Alright, about those drivers: http://pcsupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?.../mb/Windows_7/ What’s the verdict? Does it actually list my motherboard?
Since you can see my specs, which version should I go with, 32 or 64-bit? If I don't have 4GB of RAM, is it smarter to just stick with 32?

I can't even get that link to open. Look, if you see driver support for your board on there, then yeah, just install Windows 7.

And honestly, just go with x32 if you're sitting on less than 4GB of RAM. 😉

Peter Martinez18 said:I mostly just use my PC for movies, browsing, and gaming—in that order.

So, you're telling me I should just leave it alone?

yeah, just leave it be. 🙂

Keith Bennett38 said:...but during setup, it tries to shove that "Babylon toolbar" onto your system, so Eset Nod 32 probably flags it as malware.

Yeah, for sure. It definitely sees it as junk.

The software itself is actually pretty solid, though. 🙂

Gerald White44 said:I'm totally lost here... I've got Windows 7 running, and it won't let me burn any discs. It just spits them right back out after a few seconds, and they aren't even blank. What kind of software can I grab so I can actually burn stuff normally?

You should probably try what Keith Bennett38 suggested, or just go with CDburnerXP
Keith Bennett38 said:I’d suggest grabbing Ashampoo Burning studio Free. You can find it here

Man, that link is triggering my Eset Nod 32 with a virus warning the second you hit download.
I've been using this same program forever though, and honestly, it's solid. 🙂

Zachary Stewart2 said:AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+
2.2GHz, 2046MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9400 gt komp

This rig is about 6 years old now.

Hopefully it still pulls its weight...

It might actually run this week, assuming you can even track down all the drivers for your motherboard first.

Older Asus boards usually give you a bit of a headache with this stuff.🙂

Zachary Stewart2 said:I'm looking to ditch Windows XP for the new stuff, but I wanted to make sure my rig could actually handle it first. So, I grabbed that Windows 7 Advisor tool, got it installed, hit "check start," and... nothing. Just dead air. What am I missing here?

Give us the specs. CPU, RAM, what else you running?
And how old is this thing anyway?

Either just wipe it and reinstall Windows or go hit up Google for answers, because you won't find any handouts here.

I wasn't actually talking about Bolden, I meant Winamp. 😉Just saying.

Alex Doyle90 said:So, what's actually the best way to watch movies and listen to music on Linux? Specifically looking for something that handles .ts files without throwing a tantrum.

For tunes? Just use Audacity.

For movies... I always lean toward VLC.

(At least for me, anyway.) 🙂

Betty Brown48 said:Can anyone drop a link for a decent video player? Something that actually handles different formats without throwing a fit...😁

You've got Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, RealPlayer, Splash Lite, or just grab K-Lite or CCCP codec packs—those usually come with Media Player Classic Home Cinema included, which pretty much opens everything under the sun.

Just pick whatever works for you. There's plenty of other junk out there too.🙂

Roger Brown50 said:can someone please just tell me where I can actually see what graphics card I have? I can't find it for the life of me...

look, if you've already got CCleaner sitting on your machine, just fire it up. Your GPU info should be right there at the top of the window. Easy enough, right?

Or...

Just hit the Start button, type dxdiag into the search bar, and hit enter. Once that pops up, just click over to the Display tab and all your hardware details will be staring you in the face.

Alternatively...

just download Speccy. It’s a solid little tool, does the job without any fuss.

Whatever works for you, man. Pick one and get it done.😬

Roger Brown50 said:Can someone tell me how much RAM Windows 7 actually eats up after a clean install?? I'm seeing about 950MB out of my 2GB, which feels like way too much to me.

So you're asking how much memory the OS takes up...
Look, you've only got 2GB of RAM total, so honestly? That doesn't seem like much at all.🙂
