Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Benjamin Foster6 said:I've got a MAJOR ISSUE with Windows 7. I can't open any folders—it just keeps telling me some program is missing. For example, if I try to open My Computer, I can't even get into Local Disk C or D. Same thing happens with Documents; I can't open a single subfolder in there. Has anyone dealt with anything like this??😕😕 😕

Look, you need to actually specify which program is supposedly "missing." If you provide that info, maybe someone here can actually help you out.

Go to your microphone settings, right-click properties, head over to the Listen tab, and check the box that says "Listen to this device," then hit apply.

If you end up getting that annoying feedback loop when you crank up the speakers, just turn down the microphone input level.

I just finished setting up a fresh install of Windows 7, and right out of the gate, I pulled down about fifty-something updates totaling maybe 150 or 160MB. If I recall correctly, there was even more stuff—maybe another 340 or 350MB worth of individual updates floating around—but hey, if you say so, you probably know better than I do. 👍

Let me get this straight—I’ve already burned through 65 updates with the American pack installed, excluding 033. Right after the initial install, I had about 57 updates pop up, totaling somewhere around 153 to 180MB—or at least, that's what I recall. Now, these last 8 updates alone? They're pushing close to 500MB. For God's sake, that's ridiculous. But whatever, it is what it is.
I only run updates for Windows, and I have absolutely no clue where they're pulling 500MB from.

Every single update we've seen up until now has been under 200MB, so where on earth is all this extra weight coming from?? How does a service pack jump to 500MB for 32-bit or hit 800MB for 64-bit? Or am I just completely missing something here?
Basically, these file sizes and weights just don't add up at all to me.

Look, if you’ve got those equalizer settings sitting at a completely flat position in your sound card driver, you need to actually adjust them. Don't just leave them there. 👍

The New York Times website looks pretty empty on both sides for me right now, too. But usually, they have those fixed ads sitting there, so you just end up scrolling through the middle where the actual article text is. Those sidebars normally stay pinned in place while you read. 👍

It works perfectly fine, and I’ve actually been testing this setup on a dual boot with Windows XP and Windows 7 for quite some time now.👍

I've got two systems installed—Windows XP on my C drive and Windows 7 on my D drive.
Everything was working perfectly fine before; whenever I booted up, the computer would actually ask me which one I wanted to run, XP or Windows 7.
But today, I went ahead and reinstalled XP onto the C drive, and now it won't give me the choice at all. It just defaults straight to XP and boots right in.
I read somewhere online that this might have something to do with NTFS or some other file system issue.

Just go find and download easyBCD 1.7.2 along with the instructions on how to use it. That’s your fix. Forget all that nonsense about NTFS.
And obviously, I'm assuming you didn't try to install this using FAT32.👍

Jason Chase10 said:It isn’t about the timing or the updates themselves—it’s because everything just stopped working, from the pre-installed stuff to the actual "Microsoft" branded tools. In my experience, the issues started cropping up right after I installed Visual Studio. At least, that was when I started noticing the gadgets acting up.

I’ve never even touched Visual Studio in my life,
but I have installed all the updates—well, all except one, obviously.

Look, if you think you’ve got it all figured out, don't come crawling to us poor souls asking for our input just to go ahead and do whatever you want anyway. It’s a bad look.
A whole bunch of different things are clearly making these gadgets fail. For some people, it's UAC; I realized it was an issue for me right after a Windows update. And if I remember correctly, there was something about those two specific time-calculation updates that played a huge role. It seems like your Visual Studio situation just happened to coincide with that.
I can't tell you you're wrong, but honestly, you aren't telling me anything useful either.

The point is, I actually know what System Restore is for, so I don't disable it—unless I'm scrubbing the system clean of junk... peace. 👍

Jason Chase10 said:Let me just answer my own question here 😬 (might help someone else out too)

The fix is basically to pull up the Registry Editor and navigate to this specific path:
Path:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\]

...then just wipe out all the keys sitting in there. Once you do that, the gadgets start working again! 👍

So, at the end of the day, it’s clearly some mess involving their Daylight Saving Time updates, blah blah blah.
Honestly, you can adjust the clock yourself; if they haven't fixed the core issue in the original code, they shouldn't need these constant updates that obviously screw up the time zones.
When that happens, the gadget breaks because it doesn't know what time to display, and that ends up dragging down every other gadget on the system. 😛

Look, I don't even use UAC, so this sudden glitching isn't coming from there. It’s like the system just decided to throw a tantrum on its own, but let me be clear: it has absolutely nothing to do with UAC. We're looking at something else entirely here.👍

Once I saw the way it was being displayed on my screen, I just handled it with a quick system restore back to the last stable checkpoint,
it popped up out of nowhere, just like that,

No, look, every single program writes data to the C drive. I honestly think even if you force an installation onto the D drive, it’s still going to mess with things on the C drive regardless 👍

Manufacturers probably just didn't bother developing new drivers for a newer OS. Their older models are ancient at this point, so they’re likely banking on people upgrading to newer hardware that actually plays nice with Windows 7. In that case, you can't really blame Windows 7,
the Epson situation is strange, but honestly, it's not impossible,
Microsoft didn't just pull these Plug and Play drivers out of thin air; they grabbed them from the manufacturers and baked them right into the OS.

Some things just aren't compatible. My take is based on my wife's ancient Samsung D900 phone. I tried looking for Windows 7 drivers for it and nearly lost my mind—not because Windows 7 is broken, but because Samsung has released so many phones since then that they couldn't care less about a D900 that hasn't been manufactured in years.
The thing still works perfectly fine, but trying to get it to interact with Windows 7 is an absolute nightmare. Even over Bluetooth, it's a bust, and I haven't even seen where the damn cable is hiding.
I'm not sure if a wired connection would work, but I doubt it if the wireless fails,

that's just what occurred to me. 👍

I wouldn't bet a single cent that Windows 7 is actually going to run smoothly on just 512MB of RAM.
It’s not like you’re just installing the OS and nothing else; you aren't just running the OS in a vacuum. You've got an entire ecosystem of programs fighting for resources—antivirus software, web browsers, media players, network drivers, blah, blah, blah. (For instance, my Chrome browser is sitting at 166MB right now, and if I try to fire up SAS at the same time, it demands over 100MB on top of that. What exactly are we talking about here? That alone eats up half of a 512MB limit! Where is the system supposed to pull more memory from when things get heavy? It can't. There simply isn't any left.)

It makes absolutely zero sense to even attempt this. Even Windows XP, when you throw modern software at it—software designed with contemporary solutions that demand increasingly massive amounts of RAM—
it barely stays alive.👍

I’m not even sure if they'll grant him access to the system partition—usually, that kind of thing just doesn't happen 👍

If you're running any pirated software, you might want to give this some thought—apparently, they're slapping on a "watermark evaluation copy 31.8.2011" code at Tray... 👍

On my Ultimate build, I've only got this latest one; SP1 isn't even showing up for me.

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.93.695.0)

Download size: 370 KB

Update type: Important

And let's be real—that SP1 RC isn't exactly obvious on Windows Update.👍
